I was at the Port Vale game but can't really remember the tackle. Such a shame for one of my all time favourite blades. Dane was right, we had an excellent team at the time. I said to my mate that this team will play in the Premier league. Sadly, most of them did but not for us.
I think Port Vale was also the last game before Ward and Tiler were sold to Everton. Great timing, Dane does his knee and then weaken the team further a few days later! And that's before we even think what happened in Jan!

That Spackers 1997/1998 side was as good as Wilderball 2018/2019. Didn't Dane score about 6 or 7 goals in about 20 appearances up until that nasty prick finished his career?

I don't harbour malice in my own life but I can't help but get irritated when I see Ainsworth on TV. He is something of a media darling owing to the good work he's done with lovely old Wycombe whereas we know he's never made the mildest attempt to reconcile that red in his ledger. The petty side of me can't overlook that he walks, talks and acts like a twat too.

YorkBlade you're a Blade, in the showbiz industry and in the Bucks. area - so you have an opportunity to be a legendary Sheffield United fan if you ever find yourself holding a microphone under his chin.

Dane and I have spoken about my location and proximity to Gareth Ainsworth.
We've talked the various scenarios through and both come to the conclusion that there's really no good outcome to me approaching Ainsworth.

Brilliant interview gents,
that's how you interview no talking over the guest and that's hard by over the internet i.e. not sat in a room face to face, well done ! Jim White take note !

Dane was one of my all time favourite players, hard working with quality thrown in, travesty what happened those who comment on letting it go i suppose as the saying goes you don't know what you have lost until its gone, i genuinely believe be it with United or somewhere else he would have got better and better.

Love the honesty and the passion and what's wrong with expecting a bit of decency these days, can you imagine Klopp if this horror tackle was committed against Salah etc, unfortunately different times however give me players like this anyway, Moose, McBurnie etc take a look at a proper footballer !

Idea for TV show;

Hal Stewart to star in a Louis Theroux style documentary where he cohabits with Gareth Ainsworth for a week under the guise of journalling his football manager/rockstar career.

It's a fascinating interview, but really harrowing when he talks so long about Gareth Ainsworth.

It is really sad that there's so much bitterness and resentment from Dane about him. I understand why its there, but it really won't
help him holding onto the hate he has.

Someone once said that holding on to bitterness is like drinking poison and thinking the other person will get ill.
Fair point mate, I totally understand what you're saying. I think it's telling though that at no point in the interview does Dane even fault the (bloody awful) challenge- it's the lack of manners, decency and respect in not making any contact at all that bothers and angers him.

Integrity and being a decent feller seem to mean everything to him. I can't fault that but aye, I hope he was (understandably) angry talking about it for the first time rather than it eating away at him all the time.

I'd reckon we remember him so well for playing on the left, scoring against 'them' etc that it's easy to forget just how good he was looking as an attacking centre mid under Spackman. He was bloody unbelievable.

Not even giving too much credit to Spackman, that had to be the best Blades squad and side of our recent history (before they all got sold off) but Dane was running the show every week. Ridiculous form, he was like a different player and God knows what he was set for... absolutely horrible it happened to him at that time.

Sheffield United 97/98

Just some of the players off the top of my head from that time

1. Alan Kelly

2. Vas Borbokis
3. Wayne Quinn
4. Carl Tiler/Tri Dellas
5. Paul McGrath
6. David Holdsworth

7. Mitch Ward/Mark Patterson
8. Don Hutchison
11. Dane Whitehouse

9. Jan Aage-Fjortoft
10. Brian Deane

Not to mention Curtis Woodhouse, Gareth Taylor and Lee Morris!

What were you playing - rollerball ?
Mate, I shudder now when I think back about that and other matches that were just pure filth. Once had my one of my shinpads shattered by some nutter who growled everytime he went into a challenge...and that was a proper game in the autoglass u18s 🤣🤣

And Nicky Marker, Dean Saunders, Peter Katchouro, Graham Stuart, Marcelo- and Vonk, David White, Nilsen, Lee Sandford, even Andy Walker were still around too. Unbelievable squad, more strikers than Warnock!

I think Marker got player of the season, how could I forget!?

Very moving interview spoken straight from the heart and as a true Sheffielder.

I wish Dane could have had a heart to heart with a few of the big money fancy dans who have “played” for us in recent times & told them straight what a privilege & honour it is to play professional football for SUFC.

Top man Dane.

As a 10yr old playing for parkhill junior school,we got drawn against woodthorpe junior school,we played at our home pitch of Skye edge,on a Saturday morning, pissing down and blowing a gale up there,Dane was playing for woodthorpe juniors,ge was there star,we walloped them 5-0,obviously the cream rise to the top,he most certainly did, great player.

A great interview. Dane seems a top bloke and seemed to enjoy doing it too, despite the undoubted difficult content.

I started going to games in 97/98, as a child, so my memories of Dane on the field are both limited and vague. But that side was exceptional and took a number of (typically United) exceptional events for it not to have gone up. Dane getting injured and then of course the absolute calamity off the field with all the player sales and Spackman getting pissed off with it all and going, being part of that.

Another one that I've enjoyed lads.

The "yeti" what a cowardly excuse for a man..

Fantastic interview with one of my very favourite players. Was completely gutted at both the "tackle", and when it was clear that his comeback wasn't going to work out :(

They don't make 'em like Dane anymore.

Really enjoyed that - Dane as always a top man - straight as a die. I met him once and he was exactly like on your interview, just a down to earth good bloke. I recalled with him the goal at the Lane versus the pigs, thinking of that goal still sends a shiver down my spine thinking as it bounced off Woods towards him.

Great player for us too one of the best goalscoring midfielders of our time and so sad to have his career cut short like that.

I was there at Port Vale and also don't recall much of the incident really if I recall he was facing away from the away end and maybe I just can't remember the impact that well. Still obviously hurts him with how Ainsworth didn't ever get in touch with him, and understandably so - coward.

Absolutely loved it!!
Best one so far.
It left me feeling like I need to brush up on my Sheffield accent though because Dane's is elite

Tracey 27 league games, Kelly 19. Tracey was a regular starter from Aug to December

Think this one was your best one yet. Genuinely moving hearing Dane's recollection of the incident. God knows what will happen when we come across Ainsworth as a manager. I think it will be the most hostile reception of all time.
Thanks mate, Wycombe being in the same league would actually be really handy for me geographically, it's only happened once since I've lived in Bucks! Ideally Ainsworth is sacked before that can happen, I hate thinking he's a media darling and reaping all the rewards of professional football as a manager whilst Dane is no longer involved in the game and Dane was twice the player.

Amazing work Hal and Nick, my hero growing up was everything me and my friends wanted to be 1 club blade!

Brilliant this, you can tell that the whole thing still hurts him to this day. He was just a bit before my time i actually started watching football, but i always knew growing up that he was a quality player and a fans favourite just from what i'd heard about him. His name always came up on the radio during commentary and then more often than not i'd see his name on the results page in the Green Un later in the day. It always made me want to see him play Live but sadly i never got chance to.

I missed the first half of the interview so don’t know if this was mentioned. Did Dane say why he wasn’t involved in the game anymore? Always wondered why he didn’t become a coach or try his hand at management.
