So.....

Now we have a thread about players who, when we sold them, there was a degree of uproar on the lines that they were "never given a chance", but whose subsequent career shows them to be less than the world beaters some people thought.

I'll start with Simon Francis and Christian Nade.

Bruno Ribeiro - 25 app, 1 goal - midfielder of near mythical quality. The first player if i remember to get better the longer he was left out.

Speaking about portly Christian, from the Beeb website;

"Ten men went to carry, went to carry Nade. 10 men, 9 men, 8 men, 7 men, 6 men, 5 men, 4 men, 3 men, 2 men, 1 man and a forklift truck couldn't carry Nade."
Sung by Hibs fans to Christian Nade at Tynecastle.

Luke Beckett - Didn't we sign him and then move him on really quickly?

Ahmed Fathi, only saw him once, but looked promising at the time.

Fathi - the best midfielder in the African Cup of Nations.

But the Bermuda Triangle of BDTBL's midfield claims another victim... Next!

My first "never given a chancer": Graham Anthony, midfield general.

(in the Pontins league)

I don't think some people have actually read the OP with their suggestions:

It isn't a thread to whinge about who should be starting now... it's a thread to sagely nod in amusement at the people who whinged that players should be starting, but in hindsight, ended up looking rather foolish.

There's a good thread about Francis from young Sharpy here...

HERE

I do think there were some issues that needed addressing there.

We put him out on loan I think Swiss but the quickest in and out must be Barry Hayles.

Never given a chance!! ;-)

Ha ha Barry Chuffin Hayles! Forgot about him!

Me and my old chap decided to do a Shirt sponsorship that season and thought, Barry "the hitman" Hayles was an ideal player to sponsor, based on the players available. I had big hopes for the big useless bag of ...

Think he played once and then we got rid! Gutted

We ended up being able to change the sponsorship to Bromby

I remember seeing on the Warnock series that Hayles got both barrels from Warnock...

He played about 4 or 5 times before, miraculously, we sold him for £70,000 having got him for free. In fairness to Hayles, he was a midget and we werent exactly playing to his strengths at the time.

He played in the first 4 games of the 04-05 season - Burnley(a) 1-1, Stoke (h) 0-0, Reading (h) 0-1 and Preston (a) 1-0. Gray scored both goals.

After the magic forward line of Gray and Hayles only scored 2 goals in 4 games, maybe Warnock thought something had to give.

Didnt he play against Stockport in the League Cup as well?

Hayles also missed some remarkable sitters in those games. That can't have helped.

We might be adding young Kyle Naughton to this soon. Think he came on as sub in August and, apart from Carling Cup v Donny, hasnt been seen since. Doesnt even make the bench these days. On reflection £5m for him seems like a decent deal now. He will probably end up going on a season long loan in the summer to some average championship side - us perhaps ;)

So.....

I'll start with Simon Francis .

Watching the reserves in 2004, Nicky Law's (senior) recommendation of Francis to NW turned out to be a joke. Couldnt win anything in the air despite being tall and he was slow to the ball

Another to add to the list.

Ian Ross.

Lauded by Neil Warnock as the next big thing, England U-19 international and a player who destined for great things. People seemed to buy in to the hype and there was regular calls for him to come in to the first team. Took an absolute age for him to make his breakthrough and make a first team start, and he wasn't all that great. In the end he seems to have drifted away from the game.

Last saturday whilst we was labouring to a 1-0 win at home to Peterborough, i overheard someone remarking in the manner of an all seeing, all knowing fountain of knowledge. "I see Billy Sharp has scored for Donny again!!!)

Spoke to a youth coach last night and we discussed Ian Ross. He agreed with me that Ross had "almost everything" to be one of our best players and we discussed on what went wrong for him. Maybe if we had a different manager who liked his team "to play on the floor" then Ross would have been "nurtured properly". He was to play in a FA Cup match for us a few years ago but tragically his dad passed away suddenly at a young age which could be one of the reasons why he wasnt the same player afterwards

Watching him in the first team when he first arrived he looked good, and the following season (which turned horrible) we were crying out for an attacking full back. Like Warnock explained when Francis eventually left, he had every attribute. But sometimes that isn't enough. You also need mental strength, attitude and professionalism to make it at top level.

He's playing for Alfreton Town in the Conference North now. I think the only games he played for us were in the first two rounds of the League Cup in 05-06, though he did score on his debut v Boston on 23/8/05.
