So many threads adopting the oh lets give up theres no hope attitude
we are Sheffield United
We dont do easy
what was a more forlorn outlook than our return to the top flight in 1990
bottom of the table cut adrift just before xmas no wins
no form no hope

then

so remember we always can muster up a run
its what we do
its why we go , somehow we fight back

That side then had players that played like they gave a fuck, sadly our current bunch doesn't and hasn't for 4/5 years save for the odd cup game.

No one wanted Bassett out then and we had a togetherness and had fuck all money - God only knows what Bassett could have done with game changing or any investment.

I heard he had to stump up his own money to help pay for Brian Gayle.

Can you imagine any of this lot playing in a Basset side? He would have fucked most of them off within weeks.

none of us were saying that before the forest game , we werent exactly cheering from the rafters in november
in hindsight they tried,,,,,,,,

Yeah on Saturday as Southend waltz through our midfield towards that shit house Collins instead of my heart been in my mouth I'll thank my lucky stars :-/

Why are you calling 'Collo' nasty names. Didn't you realise it might hurt his feelings. Can i remind you after our stunning away triumph against the odds away at Morecambe on the first round of the League Cup he did a little cry after Nasty Nigel Clough had been nasty to him and Nice Nigel Adkins has given him another chance.

Could you imagine it what it must be like for poor old Collo when people are calling him a shit house?

Just from that short clip you could tell the atmosphere was special back then. The fans have become as dejected and lifeless as the players now.

Yeah, Bassett had a side full of leaders and battlers. How many players in a Bassett side could've been captain of the current blades side... They may not have had yellow and pink boots in bassetts days but they had heart and fight. Warnock also picked up a side full of leaders, from Morgan to Holdsworth we had a battling side.

It's not to say that we should return to that way of playing, but since Doyle left, there is nobody to pull these players back into line. It's fine for Collins to Bollock Long, but when he's making just as many mistakes as him, he loses respect.

This is an interesting article from Alan Biggs, with Jamie Hoyland, it speculates why we have the problem with a lack of leadership.

The problem we have is that it's hard to find another Morgs or a Brian Gayle. But Adkins has to find one. Basham, Collins and McEverley aren't the answer, even Brayford, whilst commanding respect, might not have that nasty side to him.

Doyle was an awful captain. he very rarely did any of the things your putting him on a pedestal for. Hammond is meant to be a strong leader so I have to ask, what the feck happens to them when the join this club.

Doyle was a reasonable captain IMO, he was no morgs, that's for sure, but he was better than what we've got now

I've just realised I don't know who the captain of Sheffield United Football Club is. I'm a season ticket holder and I couldn't tell you for sure.

Is it Collins or Basham? Or Sharp?

Doyle looked as though he was going downhill last season, but I still think he was in our top 3 players. Madness to get rid of him.
I'm not questioning the football reasons for getting rid of him and I also think the time was right for him to go, but losing him as captain should've been addressed and priority given to bringing In a leader.

William Henry Foulkes might demand satisfaction if he gets wind of this, it'll be pistols at dawn to defend Collo's honour!

Er...I actually remember fans singing 'One Dave Bassett' when we were getting pumped 3-0 away at Norwich in November.

BTL has got it totally wrong their were no calls for Bassett to go and fans were hundred percent behind Bassett as I recall, many realised where we were 2 years previously.

If Adkins had shown the same Bollox and desire and did the same as Bassett we would back him to the hilt just as much.

I recall that Norwich game I also recall losing to Sunderland around the same time at home and heard no dissent aimed at DB

we liked bassett as wed won 2 consecutive promotions , but still saw no way out then for the team
all Im saying is its possible to change tack , go from mis firing to clicking
if a crummy yeovil side can do it -----------------------

People also liked Bassett because his players would have taken a blowtorch to the knackers for each other and the team. Our current set of wankers...

I question the football reasons. I think he'd have played in more than half the league games this season. He gives bite, and is by all accounts a right shithouse on the field (one opposition once said Doyle stamps, pinches and scratches you all game).

I think Basham is the one that does the toss up before the game.

But we have a side full of leaders according to Adkins

Those players and that manager had a lot of credit in the bank for their achievements over the previous 2 seasons. They’d shown character. This lot at best started the season with a clean slate from some fans and utter disdain from others for their “efforts” last season.

This bunch don’t have anything like the mental strength that Bassett’s boys had don’t command anywhere near the same respect from the fans. All that being said, Adkins is trimming the fat and looking to bring in players who he feels can take us on. He seems to have made a bad mistake in Woolford but I’m still holding out hope on the others.

As per Biggs’ article, I think the issue is wider than SUFC and is a problem with modern football. Players are pampered playboys who live celebrity lifestyles and are more bothered about their looks and their bank balance than the game. The sort of character and spirit we had under Bassett just doesn’t exist in today’s game in my opinion.

Yeah - this sort

Disagree massively ,you only have to watch the team now and last season ,Doyle would always get an early hard challenge in to guage the ref and get the opposition thinking ,exactly what is happening to us now. Cloughs biggest mistake apart from not getting a centre half in was dropping Doyle ,we virtually lost our heart when he did that. We would be much higher this season if he was still here.

as I said hindsights wonderful
they went from being bottom to mid table after under performing for 4 months
we slag off with ease this side but if they do get up they will earn the right to be shown the same revereance , if they dont then slag them
but dont give up with the season only a third the way through

The point is that even when Bassett's teams were getting thrashed, they were showing some bottle. This lot haven't even done that yet.
