Yes, I can see where you are coming from. I must admit in the final analysis knowing what Warnock was like, up and at em etc, I was amazed we lost to Wigan though. Just like Wolves in the POF. Bloody unbelievable. Hey ho.

This and several incident like it is why I would put Porterfield above Warnock. His flirting with Portsmouth, bottling it when we were within a whisker of stopping up in the Premiership, his behaviour in that game against West Brom, falling out with everyone around him who didn't want to do it his way.

I read his book and as someone who is an avid people watcher and human bahaviour analyser his relationships in football along with his personal life are mirrored. He comes in, everyone loves him, he falls out with everyone and it is everyone's fault but his.

His achievements with us were great, but they came at a price. He breaks about every relationship with everyone over time. Blackwell was his worst enemy. Now they are buddies again but you can guarantee he will never have said sorry. Blackwell will be Warnocks doormat. McCabe, Bean and anyone who challenged him became enemies.

One thing that shows strength of character in a person and a genuine leader is you can challenge them as an equal and they will accept it and respond as an equal. Warnock would never do that.

Y'know, I've compared McClaren with Adkins all season. He was a flop at Derby (for which, read Reading), is moaning about 'dressing room discontent', 'powerless from day one (read Gillingham), 'oversaw a process of gradual decline' (not sure about the 'gradual' bit) etc.

  • He was cheating the sack ever since the eight-game winless start
  • Cracks had existed all season but finally became apparent to all in January
  • That he lasted beyond the early weeks of 2016 could yet prove costly
Yes, there were mitigating factors – sizeable but misplaced recruitment chief among them – but McClaren, in the isolation of his own role, had performed poorly. Very poorly.

Indeed, their biggest failure could be in failing to act sooner. For McClaren was cheating the sack ever since the eight-game winless start which he so casually discarded as 'part of the process'.

It was, however, a process of gradual decline. One of Newcastle's best performances of the season came on the opening day during a 2-2 draw with Southampton. They were supposed to get better from there, not worse.

And it got much worse. McClaren's team had no identity. They were neither conservative or adventurous, structured or carefree, aggressive or attractive. They just played, and usually got beat.

On reflection, a shock dose of realism was needed. He had been left short in key areas – namely, defence and attack – and there were severe characters flaws inside his dressing-room.

But McClaren repeatedly poured water on the flames of fear, for those who suggested this was a team headed for the Championship were told to show 'patience', another of his buzz words.

Judgement was reserved, at his request, from eight games, to 10 games, to 20 and then until the end of the season.

But after 28 largely joyless matches, judgement was returned.

The cracks had been there all season but finally they became apparent to all as January – and £28million's worth of investment – failed to spark an improvement.

Jonjo Shelvey had been a Newcastle player for just four weeks when he saw fit to address tactical shortcomings during the 5-1 defeat at Chelsea. McClaren welcomed his new captain's input, but it should not have been necessary.

McClaren had lost control and, while players such as new signing Shelvey remained firmly behind the head coach, others had serious doubts.(Collins?) Link

Largely agree. While people keep repeating 'we can't go on sacking managers' it should be 'we can't keep appointing crap managers' and 'we can't keep saying give him time' while another season goes by and we slip further behind teams we used to be above. Watching Reading v Palace last night shows how far we've slumped and these were not good teams, but they'd hammer United.

Harking back to Wilson, Clough etc. is just comparing shit for shittier. As far as I'm concerned, every manager we've had since Warnock has been sub-standard.

So, let's say we keep Adkins and give him until, say, Christmas. Has anybody seen anything - anything at all - his signings, his tactics, his motivational qualities that give you any confidence in Adkins? Me neither.

This has been a truly embarassing season, punctuated by humiliations that used to be classed as 'giant killing' but now occur on a near-fortnightly basis.
 
When I started this thread, I just wanted to express pleasure at our ex manager and one of our own rubbing those pigs arrogant snouts in their own shit.

However I just want to say how much I have really enjoyed the debate and the twists and turns as the conversation has evolved.

Warnock went above porterfield when he kept us out of division three
 
Maybe not the most appropriate time after a good win for us, but Rotherham got a point against a very strong Derby side today, despite being 0-3 down with 7 mins to play. You can say what you want about his style and tactics, but you can't deny he instills a spirit that has been sadly lacking at BL for some time now.

Neil Warnock has won six of his 12 games as Rotherham manager
Rotherham United boss Neil Warnock has said he believes he is the best manager in the Championship.

The 67-year-old took charge of the Millers in February after Neil Redfearn was sacked and has guided them towards a position of safety.

Warnock has been promoted to the top flight three times in his career.

"I don't think there is anybody else who can touch me at this level. My record is as good as anybody's," he told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"I have got to show the lads what I want and why I have been successful and they have got to come on board and they have done.

"When I came here I said 'you know how old I am and you know how many games are left and I have not come here to get relegated'. They have taken it on board and they have seen that we can move mountains and it is possible to achieve the unachievable."

Warnock, whose contract runs out at the end of the season, says he intends to continue managing next season.

He has spent the majority of his managerial life in the Football League but guided Sheffield United and QPR to the Premier League and spent a brief period in charge of Crystal Palace last season.

The former Leeds and Huddersfield boss said he did not really like managing in the top division.

"I know what I want at this level and I think the Championship is my level," he said.

"I've been in the Premier League three times and I didn't really enjoy it. Financially it's great but I didn't enjoy the day-to-day and the organisation."

Unfortunately this is one of the most accurate posts on this board. I remember being at bramall lane for the 1-0 defeat at the end of the season to millwall 1 year before we got promoted to the premiership, some applauded the teams efforts whilst many vocally suggested that warnock should f*#k off.

If he could do it without talking about himself all the time he wouldn't continually prove me right. But you have to credit what he has done once more at Rotherham.

We left after 20 mins or half time, cant remember, alcohol was involved, something i never normally touch and went to the pub. It was a shit shit shit game.

Yes, I think he'll pitch it to them that he wants one more promotion before he retires and once he's achieved it he'll step down and let them bring in a PL marquee appointment, like Newcastle did with Hughton or Saints did with Adkins.
Personally, with Pearson and Moyes out of work I can't see it happening but he does have an excellent record of promotions and sorting out damaged clubs.
 
I think Mick McCarthy would be the best choice for Villa and if I was their owner I'd stump up the money to get him. Pearson would be a similarly good option but McCarthy's record in the Championship over a long period now is second to none.

Moyes would be a decent fit for Newcastle.

Warnock could do a decent job for Villa I think but Newcastle might be a bit too much for him.
 
It's probably not too early to say congratulations to Warnock for saving Rotherham from relegation. To be relegated now, they'd have to lose all their final final three games while MK Dons won all theirs and also made up 12 goals. Amazing what he has done since he took over.
