Kyle Naughton was gifted an unexpected 20th birthday present on Tuesday when he was named in Stuart Pearce's latest England U21 squad.

The Blades Academy graduate is included in the 21 man squad for the friendly international with the Czech Republic staged at Bramall Lane next week, which is the start of the preparations for the European Championships, which will take place in Sweden next summer.

Naughton has impressed since breaking into United's first-team against Watford and it has been widely reported that U21 boss Stuart Pearce has been at Bramall Lane tracking the full-back's performances.

The Sheffield born youngster, who is a lifelong Blade has been at the club since the age of 8 and has made nine consecutive starts since making his United league debut at the end of September.

The right-back has enjoyed a meteoric rise into the spotlight, putting in performances that belied his years in two South Yorkshire derbies against Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley respectively, whilst he also caught the eye when coming on as a substitute against Arsenal in the Carling Cup at the Emirates earlier this season.

Boss Kevin Blackwell was over the moon with the news and he feels it is tremendous recognition for the player and the club as a whole:

"I am delighted for Kyle and for everyone that has helped him on his journey all the way through the Academy.

"It is a pat on the back for Ron Reid, Kevin Fogg and all the other youth coaches that have enabled Kyle to reach a very high standard.

"I am delighted he has been called-up and he is in there on merit, hopefully this is the start of a long association with England."

Hardly a real surprise :)

Well done Kyle.

Excellent news. The one of many, i'm sure!

Well this is him in the spotlight providing he gets a game.

Pearce said himself on the radio earleir, that its a chance for those outside the Premiership to show what they can do. He also said as a manager he and many other always look to the youth squads at national level for players, because no one gets in those squads without doing something right.

Thought National Service had ended..............where is he going into army, navy or airforce? ;)

Great news for both Kyle and United. Its no more than he deserves. He is in my opinion one of the most exciting players to break into the sqaud from the youth set up for a long long time.

One query/concern.....does anyone know what the ticket take up is for next week? I read that United had only opened 1 stand....so surely the tickets aren't selling.

Hopefully there'll be a good attendance. It will reflect bad on United if not.......

Aren't you allowed something like 2 players up to the age of 23 in the squad, for some stupid reason?

Nicked from the British Olympic doodah -
In Men’s Olympic Football, each 18-member squad must include at least 15 athletes less than 23 years of age. There is no age limit for the remaining three.
Hence Ronaldinho playing for the Brazil team at the last Olympics.
And from Wikipediea -
Since the under-21 competition rules insist that players must be 21 or under at the start of a two year competition, technically it is an U-23 competition.

That's why the players they pick now are under 21, but won't be when the finals start. The competition itself is actually two years long, like the grown-up World Cup and Euros.

Well done Kyle. Keep impressing like this and I think I've just got a name for my forthcoming son :) Kyle RaWW :)
