It's easy spin it, spend 1 million on a right back who would you get? Who's considerably better than for example Baldock?

Who is proven, who would join SUFC who would fit in our ethos ?

Last time we did it we ended up with Brayford!

It's not a massive amount, but it's plenty for a player who's just been relegated from L2 and it's not the sort of fee we would've previously paid without any hesitation. It's a decisive bid, the sort of bid to make if you want to make sure you sign the player. That's what it looks like we're doing here, and with the wages we've apparently offered Stevens.

It also looks like Thomas might be out of contract, meaning we might have bid 300k despite possibly being able to get him for less in compensation, which would reinforce the point even more. Pay a bit more now, don't risk missing out later?

Everything points to a very purposeful and pro active summer of recruitment.

I bet it's no where near £300k, the media like to inflate things . Did the same thing with the Evans fee

Probably not, but it does seem like a reliable source. If he's out of contract then I don't think the tribunal would ask for more than 200k. He's only been there 18 months.

Probably because Evans has hardly played for the few years and did little this year other than start well.
Sounds like the same can be said for this bloke according to the hartlepool fans. None of them are upset that he's leavingv

Would love to be linked with some established championship quality

I think you may be a bit disappointed.

Wilder's recruitment philosophy is to pick up players who feel joining Sheffield United would be a big step up for them - and not a sideways step or a step down at the end of their career. This is a key ingredient to our success. Personally I hope he sticks with it. I don't know anything about this guy Nathan Thomas, but he fits that bill.

Don't forget we already have players in our squad with "established championship quality" btw. I've no desire to see Wilder go out and pay big money for someone who is already operating at Championship level and is an established name. I'd much rather him recruit players like this, who are hungry, or go shopping for some young kids who are in the Prem reserves, and looking to make a headline or two for themselves to become known and get a chance in their first team.

You heard of John Fleck?
Ye the bloke played in the SPL and the Championship.
I assumed you meant undiscovered talent that had never played any higher than where they currently are.

Top post. Agree with every single word of it.

We've had the "been there and done it" brigade before and look where that got us. Wilder knows which players will be able to cut it. Let's leave him to get on with it.

Have a like.

Leeds and Boro after Thomas as well now, apparently.

Maybe true may be not
Hartlepool I'm sure will using the press to say other teams are interested to push the the price up .
Its all a game played by the various parties.
It's as night follows day and I'm happy with the way Wilder and co are playing the game .

Sorry mate, but that is complete and utter bollocks! We got into League One by signing poor players being managed by a poor manager.

Newcastle and Brighton signed some of the "been there and done it" brigade and it got them promoted!

I saw today's article from the HITC website which said that Middlesborough local rag the Northern Echo had said Boro have now matched our bid but no where could i actually find the article directly! I would be surprised if a club coming down from the Prem would be looking at Thomas who has also been off form post his injury according to their fans.

If Boro match our offer we haven't a prayer. He's a Boro lad through and through.

On Sky that Borough had an offer accepted by Hartlepool up to player now

His pace and skill looks refreshing , but so did Campbell ryce in that league and let's face it he never did much , one thing tho that is obvious either this lad is that he's got a great cross on him , and no matter what league ur in your crossing ability is just as good when u move up the leagues , it's just if he Will seen as skill full when we are versing championship quality defenders and defenders that have come down from premier league . 300 thousand does seem quite a lot of money in my opinion for someone whose teams been relegated to conference

Is that a similar philosophy to Alan Hanson's infamous statement "You'll never win anything with Kids"? There is more than one way to skin a Rabbit to use a metaphor, and thankfully Chris is the one with the knife.I'm leaving it to him cos he is much more qualified to do what is right and proper for our beloved Club and loyal supporters.

Whatever happens we will have pace and excitement on the pitch next season. After spending many years living overseas and missing so much I shall be a season Ticket holder and cannot wait.

Won't be too bothered if he goes to Boro. Other, arguably better, targets out there.

If I were Wilder I'd be speaking to Chapman and saying "what's this about Boro agreeing a fee with Hartlepool for a left winger? Isn't that your position? Where's that going to leave you? If I were you I'd be looking to move if they are getting another young lad in in your position!"

I'm relaxed about this one - Holmes, Carey, Thomas just in the past 2 days. Plenty of options in that role.

I'm much more interested in seeing Stevens get over the line. He'd be a definite starter. I can't see a 21 year old from the bottom of league two being seen as one of the key pieces in the Wilder jigsaw.

Otzumer, Marcus Maddison and Ben Reeves were two other names linked recently for the no 10! Probably 2 out of the 6 will have had more interest than the others. Holmes and Thomas at a guess.

The thing that I love about us at the moment is Wilder takes no nonsense, if they want to go and play for another club let them go we will move onto someone else.

If Thomas doesn't want to 100% be here next season, CW will not want him here.

Least come August we have a team of 20+ players who all want to play for our club, and as a supporter we cannot ask for anything more.

Apparently Middlesborough also agreed a £300k fee and its up to the player to decide his future

Not so much us signing gems (we've often got our policy wrong in the past and signed overpaid players who seem to be on the way downwards) but in general they're some great players at this level. Players like Maddison, Otzumer, Ricky Holmes spring to mind as decent players to look at currently and I really like the signing of Stephens. There's just too many examples to mention and obviously some are beyond are price structure like Deli Ali when he was at MK but players like John Egan from Gillingham who has gone onto do really well for Brentford, Romaine Sawers now also at Brentford didn't cost much, Kemar Roofe when he was at Oxford - Ok, he cost over a million but what I'm trying to say is that there are some great gems in the lower leagues, non league, Scotland and Irish leagues. Jamie Murphy was the best we've signed, its not just Leagues One and Two I'm talking about to be honest.

Reading signed the two Irish lads for a pittance in Shane Long and Kevin Doyle back in 2006 and we on the other hand spent over £2m on Geoff Horsfield and Adi Akinbiyi! Its unlikely we are going to be able to spend millions so buying players who can develop from small fees who are hungry to succeed seems a great ploy to me don't you think?

That last paragraph sums it up really !!

I would rather we bought Harry Chapman if he would move !

In some ways this is a good thing.

If he still chooses us, he'll get more game time and be part of something special for a big club on the up, and it'll show he's a sensible lad with a desire to play for us.

If not, then he can go and pick up a slighter bigger wage at a smaller club on a downward trajectory, where he'll probably spend most of his time sitting in the reserves. And we'll have moved swiftly on.

What's with all these "I'm leaving it to Wilder" posts? None of us are getting involved in transfers, tactics, team selection etc. no one is being asked to get involved or asking to get involved. Just because we finally have a manager that is doing a good job it doesn't need to be pointed out on every thread. We're just talking about football and United and what we think of the transfer policy in this case.

I don't have any preference on what age, nationality or club they are signed from. I just find it very odd that many are against older players signing from the Premier League or Championship, but are quick to heap praise on signing unknowns from League One and Two. Dean Hammond was a failure at United, it doesn't mean every player of a similar age from the Premier League will be a bad signing, judge each player individually.
