THOMAS BID MADE

Shrewsbury have made a bid for Sheffield United winger Nathan Thomas, according to Sky sources.

We understand that to be in the region of £175,000 for a player that has made just one appearance in the Sky Bet Championship this season.

My initial thoughts don't sell he's shown promise...

175k...

I would not understand this at all if we sold him. Came to us instead of his hometown club, probably down to Wilder... featured in 2 professional games for us and scored in both. He's the definition of 'not been given a chance'.

Loan him yeah, but don't sell him.

Let’s be honest, we’ve exceeded all expectation this season.

No issue if we just loan him but while Duffy, Brooks and now Holmes are in contract I don’t see any chance of Thomas making the pitch other than in much changed cup teams.

He’s a few years older than Brooks too.

Through no fault of his own, we’ve possibly left him behind.

If he moves, GLTTL. He came with good intentions and worked hard, scored a couple of good goals too but couldn’t dislodge some of the best players in the division.

There’s no shame in that.

Our formation doesn't suit him but I would keep him. Gives us an option if we want to switch to 4-4-2, and has potential as an attacking wing-back.

I would be very surprised if we sold him yet I get the feeling he just isn't rated by Wilder. I got a funny vibe when he seemed to gloss over Nathan's goal against Ipswich yet waxed lyrical about Slater's tackle. Both deserved huge praise.

Yeah, I thought that too when listening to the interview.

In Wilder we trust!! If he goes then obviously Chris thinks it's a good deal for club and player.
Sometimes a player Doasnt fit ,you move them on,not saying that's the case !
We will see !.

Why would we sell a player for less than we paid for him when he has only been with us since the beginning of the season. Shrewsbury need to double their bid before we even consider this offer.

I'd too be surprised if he was sold (unless it is to balance the books following Holmes' arrival and would have thought a loan would be far more likely.

However, I take the points already made about his natural position (left-mid/left-wing) not existing in Utd's preferred formation and with Stevens, Holmes and Lafferty at the club, his opportunities may be somewhat limited.

If he did got I'd be surprised if Utd would be prepared to make a loss - didn't they buy him for £300-350k

As above, loan him out & get game time (at a level he's barely [if ever ?] played) - should give some (more) insight into whether he is of a quality we (now) need/want/have for next season.

Doesn't make a lot of sense @ that price - reckon we paid around x2 as much ?
(It appears) We don't (now) have to flog folk (when a (1st) bid comes in - just look at Sarfend & Charlietown

Does of course afford Doooooooommongers opportunity to snipe at Uncle Kev-
I'll start you's off:-
"Selling (relatively) Young Talent Off Cheap"
"Never Been Given A Chance"
"Can't Understand How He Didn't Get A Game Afore Stearman"
"(Piggy) Hurst Seen In Copthorne"
"First of Many - Mass Exodus..... "
etc -

Shrewsbury would be a great loan move for him.

But permanent? No chance. Certainly not for that money. Selling him now makes no sense whatsoever.

Send him out on loan and then decide at the end of the season.

Maybe he fitted in with long term goals, which in the short term we're looking like exceeding.
In which case, do you move on quickly to take advantage or hold back in case he make's a step up quicker than expected?

All ifs and buts... but i'd like to see him loaned to a LG1 side.

Would be sorry to see him go, like his directness and attitude, a decent loan may be the best bet

Anyone any ideas how much we paid for him?
I thought it was around £150k

This is why Wilder is employed, to make difficult, sometimes puzzling decisions.

I can only imagine the discussions that go on between Wilder and his colleagues. No stone will be left unturned, they'll discuss this comprehensively, and then, and only then, will a decision be made about Nathan's future. As Chris has said before, he's not sentimental, so any decisions reached will be what he considers right for the club. Nathan is different to what else we have, I'd like to see him make more appearances, but Wilder's focus is on making the play-offs at least, so no surprise that he makes the decisions he makes. Chris Hussey was another one, although I think Hussey had already made the decision an easy one for Wilder to make. It's the life of a footbaler. They need to feel wanted and in turn give their all, sadly Thomas seems to be the proverbial round peg in a square hole.

I hope that whatever happens, Nathan feels settled and a part of the manager's plans.

I think Shrewsbury is about his level at this stage of his career and would impress in league one.

A loan move would be a better option but he's so far off the first team I wouldn't blame him leaving.

Think he'll do well in League 1 if shrews play with wingers. Has shown glimpses for us but our way of playing just isn't suited to his game.

Thomas is someone I would like to keep, however like Henegan and WHiteman etc; they are victims of what we have achieved so far.

CW doesn't like big squads and I wouldnt be surprised if he goes. Weve got plenty of players ahead of him and when he was signed most at the club would have taken a mid table position in May. However we've moved on massively as a club since he joined and CW sees him in training every day so he will know whether he' s up to our higher level or not. If he's not he'll be off with everyone's best wishes.

How is Hennigan a "victim" ?
he was signed as "1 for the future" & behind JOC; Bash; Stearman [to some folks chagrin] & Jakey [to some folks delight]

Given the above & the arrival of 'Lendog' (& even Lafferty?) why do we need any more C/H's ?

Had exactly the same thought when I listened to that interview. UTB

Loan him out to them. We will not accept this bid surely - £500K maybe but £175K do one.

Loan him out, if he impresses well for a team at the top of League 1 then the first figure I quoted will be easy to achieve. If he's a flop, someone will still buy him for £175K. Only thing we'd loose out on is paying his wages if he turns to shit, but we'd still get a cash sale im sure of it.

End of season loan, see how he does and see what division we are in next season, if we are Championship then I think could play a part next season, if we got promoted however I am not sure he’s Premier League class.

They both might have been in with a shout if game time if we were say mid table. I doubt we would have signed a few of the players in January that we have.

In regards to cb, if Leonard is going to play cb full time then fine, but he won’t and I personally would prefer a bit of exprience for the position over players who can do a job there.

Must just be me who thinks that having 4 cd’s and a couple of one who can do a job there leaves us short when playing a back 3

No, it's slightly concerning. A bad injury to JOC could derail the second half of our season like the injury to Coutts derailed the first half. I'm wondering if that's why Heneghan hasn't gone out on loan yet; CW trying to find someone to bring in before he lets him go.
