Why don't we advertise the job and see who applies? A radical move for United but it might just work.

I really like Adkins...always comes across as a level-headed sort of bloke and gets the best out of Scunny on little resources.

Alan Irvine - done well for Preston with a small squad. Would he leave? Doubtful

I suggested Trond Sollied before Blackwell got the job permanently. He is now unemployed, having had a mixed time at Heerenveen. After a decent first year, where they won the cup, he was sacked in August after a poor start to the season. He's won the league and cup with Olympiakos in Greece, Club Brugge in Belgium and Rosenborg in Norway.

He's a bit of a strange fellow though, not quite sure how he'd fit in with us/in England.

I wouldn't mind getting someone in like Sollied with a proven european track record.

Lee Clark at Hudds is getting rave reviews for attacking football.

There's no way McCabe will look any further than Gary Speed (if indeed blackwell gets the chop) mainly because he's already on the payroll so with blackie and ellis gone we'd actually be saving money

That means we can afford the sports package for our new telly. Only way we'll get to see any football

As a club, we're back down in Micky Adams terretory.

Beat me to it, we can forget the big names, we're not exactly an attractive proposition at the moment. Leaps and bounds off the pitch but in terms of the squad and league position, are we any beter off than we were when Warnock took over ?

I always have done Fleety :-)

Hope you all didn't get too wet.

We were briefly better off but I still think if Warnock was here we would still be struggling to get promoted. If Warnock had the money Robson had at his disposal it doesnt bare thinking about how much Warnock would of pissed away on crap players. The situation we are in the moment needs someone similar to Warnock to step in but just not him. lol

I hadn't noticed this post so I'll repeat myself

Why do people want Speed or think he could do a job for us.

Was past it when he came to us, the game by passed him and he was robbin us of a wage.

Has made no impression whilst coaching and has never never had his finger on the pulse than runs thru' BL.

Now Reg Holdsworth is the man if you want an untried guy. Always played with his heart, understood the beat of the club and always said he wanted to come back as the manager one day.

If you want a manager with a track record then Gary [can't remember his surname] at Bristol, Holliway or Donys man would be my choice.

This is excactly the issue that all Blades are struggling with.....are we settling in for the long-haul midtable in CCC, with the odd cup run and flirtation with 6th, or are we aiming for the Prem, no holds-barred?!?!

The words from within the club seem to indicate Prem, but the actions and evidence points to midtable......until this discrepancy is resolved, we will constantly be split both within the club, and on the terraces.

All the managerial suggestions are also split along these lines - Strachan, Curbishley, Coppell are all with an eye to going up within 2 seasons or the likes of Wilder, Clark, Holdsworth are a uniting force but are acknowledging we're going to be midtable and rebuild.

For what its worth, I believe we have a midtable strategy, but the chairman will never come out and say that (too politically damaging) so we need to get a younger/uniting manager in, who we will quite happily give 3 or 4 seasons support to, allow a couple of thousand fans to drop off to make matchday more enjoyable and get back to at least moderately enjoying our footie!!!! And, incase anyone accuses me of not commiting, then Holdsworth is the man for me.....young, experienced, local, former Captain.....got everything we (now) need.....

If we are looking for an 'in-house' solution, why not bring Bobby Davison over from Fradi for the rest of the season? (They could have Blackwell in return!).

I completely agree with that, I dont understand why everyone thinks Speed will be the answer as hes been coaching with us for quite a while now and look at the football we're playing. Surely thats got a fair bit to do with Speed

Holdsworth or Wilder - up & coming Choice, give them time to rebuild the club
Adams - Experience & will steady the ship, may not be long term, Speed as future replacement?
Speed - Knows the club & players, inexperienced in Day to Day management.
A foriegn coach - fresh ideas & a radical new approach for a club like ours.

I would weep if this happened. He is no different to Blackwell and that short term replacement would no doubt turn long term.

While I have no problem with direct football (so long as it's effective), I would love it if we decided to take a punt on someone like O'Driscall, Johnson or (in my wildest dreams) Coppell.

the managers job at united is a poisoned chalice and the best we can hope for is a young manager who could galvanise the side much like irvine at preston or coyle at bolton

but seen as no one at bdtbl seems to have the vision to unearth this kind of football talent the odds are stacked against us

one other thing against us is the fact that if the new guy loses 3 games he will take over the mantle of clueless c**t from the previous 3 managers who dared not to win every game

another thing i find amusing in all this is im sure i remember people talking about blacky being some kind of messiah when warnock was in charge and leading us to the prem now he has no idea about football ,funny that

Indeed. There were several Blades who were gutted when Blackwell went to Leeds. The general feeling among a sizeable minority was that Blackwell was the true brains behind the management team and that Warnock would struggle without him. No doubt the fans who claimed Blackwell as the true genius are now screaming for his head. Not that they are wrong now, but they can't be right on both counts, can they?

If this were football manager and I were Blackwell, I'd have been sacked by now (but it's not...)

Names in line for the Boro job .. i imagine the list will be much the same if we were in the market ...
