Mythical Lack Of Recognition

It's a strange thing to be concerned about isn't it worrying about a perceived lack of recognition/praise in the media when your team's doing well. Who gives a shit? I think these sort of calls make up about 80% of phone-in traffic into TalkSport though. Weird fans phoning in to complain that they're not talking about Southampton enough or something.

What gets me about it is all this drooling they’ve done over us since we came up is only because not one of them had watched us before this season. Other than a certain few, hardly any pundits had any idea what we were about, how we played or the reasoning behind us keeping largely the same group when we came up.

All the information that could have made them look really clever was available to them while they were all tipping us to finish bottom with record low points totals.

So yes, they are giving us plenty of praise now but they really should not have been surprised.

I think we've got quite a lot of recognition from the media (I don't care either way), but at the same time there's a definite bias towards "the big 6" in media coverage. Nothing more frustrating than watching build up to games (I've stopped doing this now as I've realised it's shit, switch on at kickoff) and 10 minutes before the match they're talking about Arsenal, Liverpool or Man City instead of us and our opponents. I don't even want it to be positive, it'd just be nice if the coverage of our games could be more about us and our opponents.

I don't get this either. There are plenty of pundits that have raved about Wilder and how we play as the season has progressed. Plenty of written articles on the internet full of praise.

Souness comes in for heaps of criticism regarding his Chelsea vs our squad comment...and he was wrong but I think he was trying to make a point about the relative statures of the 2 clubs. Souness loves how we play and has regularly fawned over us, but this is conveniently forgotten.

Redknapp is another one that gets bad press, however he's campaigning for Wilder to be manager of the year - can't give much bigger praise than that, but again it's not enough for some.

I've seen people pick up on Cascarino and Merson being disrespectful....however I hardly see anything reported of the many many positive things they have said about us over the season.

It's bullshit and it's proper small man syndrome.

We've had praise throughout the season, however, we are continually written off.

"The Race For CL" is the current hot topic. When it's displayed on websites, TVs or in papers, it goes down to Wolves. Never shows us...

We get loads of recognition on Talksport. They always seem to be talking about us and we receive genuine complements from the pundits.
The outspoken Simon Jordan doesn’t seem to like us BUT he’s clearly a big fan of Chris Wilder...always gives him massive praise.
He loves his “no nonsense....say it like it is style“ and he loves how he handled the Henderson mistake against Liverpool...giving his public criticism.
Jordan thinks managers are too easy on players always trying to protect them....he says more managers should have Wilder‘s attitude.

However I feel we are seen more like a Burnley.....tough to play against that even the top teams will find difficult to beat.
Its slightly patronising but to be honest....as a newly promoted team it is understandable and reasonable.
It seems there is a need to make some 40 million plus signings before you‘re seen as a top team with ambition.
