That was, I believe, the first ever match I attended

I've a newspaper cutting from the match. Think it's from the Sunday People ...

'this was Sheffield United's finest triumph for years - the day they came from behind to hammer one of the greatest sides in the country.'
'They (Blades fans) had seen their team hit the Everton crossbar no less than three times, only to turn round a goal down. But the second division promotion hopefuls stormed back with ferocious power and spirit.'
'Twice in the first six minutes United shattered the Everton defence only to see the Merseysiders saved by the woodwork.'
'Woodward who has interested Everton this season placed a cross perfectly to the far post and Reece headed a great equaliser.
'Everton were clearly rattled. Woodward went on to pull back another measured centre and this time Addison was on the spot to plant a header beyond West and into the bottom corner. It was all over....'

Wednesday were at home that day and beat West Brom. Can't recall any South Yorkshire Police insisting playing on different days. They were chosen to be on MOTD but I would say our game was the performance and result of the day.

Certainly one of our finest days in 'modern' times.

Woody was rampant in the first half of that game. Without checking the stats, Everton had 2 England full backs Tommy Wright and Keith Newton playing and after he had roasted Newton time and again (and nearly took the bar off with one shot in front of the Kop), Everton swapped the full backs over to try to stem the tide without success.

Right back Tommy Wright was taken off injured at half time. Sub Sandy Brown came on as left back and Keith Newton switched to right back

I agree. Ours was the performance of the day. But for some reason I can't quite put my finger on I've always enjoyed seeing what Tony "Bomber" Brown got up to that afternoon as well:



Scunthorpe, featuring a very young Kevin Keegan, won at Hillsborough in the next round. We got stuffed at Derby in an absolutely packed Baseball Ground. It was mortifying to see Willie Carlin shining for them.

What a side Derby had in those days. I remember my Dad taking me , aged 11 , and we parked in some out of town wasteland just off the M1 and got a "park and ride" bus to the Baseball Ground. Fabulously exciting for a youngster like me. We were full of hope after the amazing Everton victory , but Derby oozed quality that day and we were well beaten. Somehow that first taste of an away defeat in a really significant game bound me even closer to my beloved Blades , and we all know what happened the following season !
