A rare event for me being in the city off my birth and a match on to boot. So, armed with a ticket and couple of buddies we fuelled up in the Cremorne (where I was approached by a Blade with reference to last years SUTV offers) and moseyed down to BDTBL and up on the BLUT, after being shifted from gate to gate for no reason than bad planning and shit organisation.

What a gorgeous experience it is being inside that stadium. It firmly ranks as a marker of absolute favourite places in the world. Earlier I'd dropped a PA speaker off at Real Electronics and went to visit my parents grave at Hutcliffe Wood so with this boxes ticked watching us batter Wigan was a bit of light relief.

First half we looked terrific across the park, despite kicking up toward the kop unusually. Our formation, a nicely modified 3-4-2-2 suited our abilities and although Wigan tended to exploit our left flank with George on his wrong foot we managed them and created chances from open play and set pieces alike. We do however tend to spread it wide too much but battled well to dispossess and get back on the front foot. Our goal came from such endeavour and also came from a channel run at their defence squared to the other channel in NDaiye.

We also created some great chances which were either smacked into the kop or were well blocked or saved by their players. This continued into the second half, however there was a glorious twenty minutes from about 55 to 75 where we pressed and harried and got at them, unfortunately to no avail. Wigan looked a bit shell shocked and the Hecky pulled McAtee off who had worried Wigan all afternoon and stuck Norwood on, pushing the already overworked Doyle to the tip of the midfield and with Norwood on we seemed to lose all our Mojo somewhat. This improved when the knackered Doyle was hooked for Fleck who added some bite to our midfield and was dead unlucky not to win a penalty. Second half we huffed a puffed somewhat and passed it about a lot and settled for safe game management which saw us win the deserved three points and make our claim more secure

Foderingham 6/10: Not a massive amount to do. One decent flick over from a header and some scary moments with backpasses and pressing attackers
Bogle 5/10: Pretty anonymous to be honest. Got up the pitch but was characteristically wanting when we were under pressure
Anel 6.5/10: Some decent forays forward from what was an extended RWB billet. Safe and tidy in defence
Egan 6.5/10: Found it tough getting in front of their forward pair to intercept the balls pumped up the pitch but otherwise pretty solid
Robinson 6/10: Also got forward well but seemed fragile at times
Baldock 6/10: Exposed as Wigan concentrated their switch play in his area, and was found mixing it up with the ref more than he was with their players at times
Doyle 8/10: Great game. Was everywhere. Sweeping through the midfield, front post to intercept corners, muscling their winger and providing the anchor our team needed. Knackered when he went off. We're gonna need him on Monday
Berge 7.5/10: Shocker. Today he showed so much more of what we need. Got stuck in, ran at their backline, shot for goal and challenged headers. Very good.
NDaiye 8/10: Dangerous all over the park. They shat blood when he gained possession and looked a full league above everyone on the park. Well worked goal from the inside channels
McAtee 7/10: Another good game from him. He's becoming a very similar comparator to MGW filling those inside left channels and running at them
Sharp 6/10: Showing both age and pedigree with todays performance and damned unlucky not to score with his header and other half chances

Norwood 5/10: We seemed to deflate with him on the pitch and he looked out of place and made some poor judgements
McBurnie 6.5/10: I thought he tried well to get involved today especially in the late stages
Fleck 7/10: Much improved small cameo from JF. As said, should have earned us a penalty

Ref: 3/10: Shite

HJ&SMcC 7/10: Went at them, first half. Earned the goal but we spent a lot of wasted time passing it across the face of the box retaining possession instead of getting the ball and player in the box. Some decent shots and chances on goal but our lack of finishing the game off nearly cost us

As I saw it

Thought Doyle was mom - would score Anel higher as I thought he ran at them really well and is finding his energy again .

As you say - Bogle was not on it and Norwood made us unsure .

Well done Hecky - sick of the Carrick love in

Good report

That cracked me up…..
Whoa Pomps, you were esconced on the red plastic…… what will the nay sayers say this time😀
Apologies for being mischievous…..
I was in the Cremorne for a bit, sorry I missed you; still owe you a pint for the last time
Glad you had a top day in Sunny Sheff
Thanks for the my take as always a great read

Good performance, just need a couple more goals to settle the nerves.

Nine players played very well, however Sharp was quite poor and Bogle was utterly inept. He couldn't cross his legs, sauntered back when we were caught on the break, barely beat a man all day. All this twaddle about Baldock not contributing anything going forward, well he should have got an assist today but Sharp let him down by missing a sitter.

On the plus side, while we couldn't get that second, it was great that after Aasgard's miss, we saw out the last 10-15 minutes plus injury time with the minimum of fuss. In fact it looked like we might keep the ball for the last five minutes solid until Norwood's bizarre hoick out of play.

I know it was only 1-0 but thought we played really well today, one of our better performances of the season.
We looked a very good side, having long spells of playing some accurate crisp passing.
Even our midfield had good spells of domination, Doyle and McAtee now looking confident with high quality on the ball.
Think man of the match was Doyle, he's like a young Norwood on steroids, really good allround player.
Also N'Diaye was a real pleasure to watch, has little moments of skill that are worth the admission alone.

A routine win really not much else to add. I'd have liked to see us get a few more goal it should have been at least 3-0 at HT, when it's 1-0 there is always that worry the other team will grab a goal out of nowhere. Feck Wigan and their Pier and they can shove that Northern soul up their arseholes.

Oh dear, turning up at the Lane has left you misty eyed and lacking your usual ascerbic insight.
After the first 20 minutes I thought we were slow in passing, with a lack of movement upfront.
Some of our shooting is abysmal and so many times we passed when it would have been better to shoot
In the first half I thought Berge was really good, but he disappeared for much of the second leaving me surprised at your mark for your favourite bete noir

HJ&SMcC 7/10: Went at them, first half. Earned the goal but we spent a lot of wasted time passing it across the face of the box retaining possession instead of getting the ball and player in the box. Some decent shots and chances on goal but our lack of finishing the game off nearly cost us

pommpey
Agree with that Pomps glad you got to BDTBL and enjoyed the day in the sun name me a better stadium than ours when the sun is beaming 😍, I'd knock a point off of Bogle tho thought he was completely out of it today looked lazy and half arsed tbh. Berge was as you say back to what we need want and expect and Norwood well meh, it's no surprise our upturn in form has come about with him and Fleck benched. UTB

So what you are actually saying, which I have to admit has washed over me until now, is that your expert analysis has come from the armchair of wherever you have managed to procure a dodgy stream ?

Explains a bundle 😂😂.

Always been a baldock fan and could never understand the criticism of him. One of the best defensive players in the league, nobody gets past him .... and if they do... hes a dirty bastard and makes sure they don't without ever getting into card trouble.

Bogle is ok now and again attacking, but the lad can't defend at all.

Great report Pommpey, Ndiaye reght player Berge was superb today that's what we want to see for the rest of the season good win. onwards to Burnley.if we can get a draw that will be great.

Couldn’t watch the game today, have scrolled right down passed your review without reading just to congratulate you on attending the game and having a blinding day.

(I’m gonna go finish the review now)

Berge was his usual, dead steady covering, better going forward today. He,s still covering most ground any game however slow it may look. If he,d be as bad as some view it he,d never start.

Had to have Wigan ifollow on for parts of the game as sutv kept buffering and got annoyed with their commentator constantly calling Sander .....Burrger .not burger burr -ger....prat

Got to agree it was like watching a team do the absolute minimum to bring home 3 pts. After the first20-30mins we were pretty fkin abysmal, play like that at Wembley and City will muller us. Way too slow and way too much fkin about out wide. Wigan are bottom for a reason yet we made them look half decent, for long periods in the 2nd half it looked like two clueless teams playing out a end of season game

First 20 mins on front foot + shd have been 3-0.
But second half we were awful , slow , lost midfield , devoid of any ideas to break them down.
Thank fuck they didn't equalise from their only chance coz we would never have got a second goal.
Still , can't argue with where the points have landed today and we need just 3 wins and a draw from 7 games.
Berge was much better today when we were out of possession - he even looked like he was battling for the ball - I almost couldn't believe my eyes.
Furious did well on his wrong side but Bogle was poor.
Why not play Clark , push JLT to LWB and keep Furious on his right side ?
Ndiaye is just different gravy.
Pity we can't loan both the City lads in the Prem.

Bogle has been pedestrian all season. With baldock playing out of position we essentially had no wing backs which is why Anel did most of our attacking from the back.

Disappointing about Bogle as he was a potential superstar. Maybe he's not the same after his numerous injuries and lost confidence.
