OK, tin hat on. Egan had an absolute stinker last Saturday. His worst game for us ever, by a mile. But remember the position he's playing. He's the middle CB in a back 3. His partners are further apart than if they were in a back 4. And his partners can shepherd any threat out towards the touchline, similar to a full back (which is the easiest position to play on the pitch). And similar to any back 4 CB, he has to look both ways to check offside, unlike his partners who only have to check one way across the line. So I would say he has the most difficult position in a 3-5-2 formation. To confirm this, remember that experienced old campaigner Jags having the 'rabbit in the headlights' look when he had to fill in for Egan a few times in the Prem. He didn't know what the fuck was going on. Plus, Egan's the one who gets most blocks in from through balls, shots etc. Christ, remember when Ramsdale was flopping around like a wet dish cloth instead of actually diving for the first 30 games of the relegation season. I reckon Egan probably saved more shots than Ramsdale did.
So I think the guy deserves to be cut some slack. He's been terrific for us, and a having a couple of bad games (albeit that last Saturday he was desperately poor) doesn't mean he deserves all the shit coming down on his head.
Now, Berge on the other hand......

i think you make a good point birch because of the way were set up egan is often left as the last man in the middle personally i would prefer us to play 4 at the back with 2 centre backs much closer together and if we had a physical defensive midfielder to sit in front of them i think we would be stronger at the back plus it would get us another body in midfield just now teams are just cutting through our midfield at will

Have you ever wondered how we have got to second in the Championship, and one of the best defence records in the league, with someone like as our defensive lynchpin?
If you have to wait, a few months each time, before you can trot out your line that Egan isn’t good enough, maybe he is good enough.
Hopefully, it’ll be a few months time, again, before we hear from you, on John Egan.
As I said on a different thread it’s opinions, not gunna ram it down people’s throats every time, said it twice. It’s called a forum. Idiot. I don’t rate him, you clearly do. Well done you 👍🏼

Egan 8 out of 10 for me today.
What’s your rating for today’s performance, Einstein?

Much better performance today against Watford.A 1-0 win for 3 points. Better still boro lost 2-0-3 points equals a more comfy seven-point gap for us. keep it up and we will get where we all want to be.

Played well. Should be that week in week out, and he isn’t.
Having Osborn as sub at left back with his defensive head on made a big difference to left side defence. Egan will always struggle when we play two attacking wing backs to start a game, especially if Anel plays like a loose horse, (as good as he can be).
Egan is good, but he’s not getting any younger. Team game innit?
