“So what” being back in League one! Blimey

Be an interesting few months. We will see who is up to it and who's not now we are no longer playing with momentum and confidence. We have played the very best teams now so we can really see where we are against the teams we will be playing again next season.

You could argue the players are now playing for their United careers. That's how knee jerk I'm being tonight

There is an element of truth to that.

We have players signed to contracts but if we want to move on from where we are we prob need to improve from the likes of Donaldson, Lundstram, Stevens, Basham, Moore, Sharp etc.

I think we have some good players but tonight showed we do have a lot of avergae players in comparison to the top level players. We need to keep improving and there is no room for sympathy. There may be a bigger turnover of players next few seasons than many would think if we are to improve.

This is what I am trying to get at.. some think constructive criticism is an attack on the manager, one of the best managers we have ever had.

Will we be able to move the likes of those players you mention above on though? We all know there's not going to be that much to spend. Chris does not like large squads. If you're saying Donaldson, Lundstram, Stevens, Basham, Moore, Sharp then I assume you'll be including Lafferty, Lavery, Carruthers, Wright, Reed, Long, and maybe even Clarke. That's a lot of players on wages League 1 teams can't afford.

Why do you think that lot in the second group are on wages L1 clubs can't afford? We signed them when we were in L1. Apart from Clarke and he's going nowhere.
How long is Donaldson's contract? We won't be getting rid of Lafferty and Stevens, that would be ridiculous. Long is out of contract at the end of the season. I doubt we'll ship Basham or Moore out, we'll keep them as cover.

Well, we struggled to offload players last season as they were on higher wages most were prepared to pay, and now they've all had a payrise.

Wilder didn't sign the players we struggled to get rid of. He actually knows what players should be paid, unless our previous managers. Did you not hear about how he withdrew Long's contract offer because he thought it was too much?

..is not this season, we are going to finish mid table, which Is where most would have been happy with it’s what is going to happen next season.

We scoffed at the pundits earlier in the season saying a lot of our form was down to momentum from last season but I am starting to think there was something in that..

If we now stumble to finish 13th or so we will be in the bottom end of the form table with no momentum or confidence to carry over to next season.

I want to see us finish strongly for that reason, I am not bothered about the playoffs as I don’t think we would win them, but I want the players to believe we can still compete at this level. If we start next season in the form of the last three months we are going to be in serious trouble.

Christ some people are over reacting, yes we have been on an awful run after coutts's injury but I think we have been very very very unlucky on this run , we have dominated the majority of matches on this run derby ? Villa ? Wednesday? Bristol city ?

If it werent for bad luck and the coutts injury and badd luck wed be 3/4 th i still can see us going on a better run and getting the last play off spot with these next fixtures

Another way to avoid that would be to buy players capable of improving the squad. You know decent Championship level players.

Not League one triers.

There is a reason we did our business early this window.. no one else at this level were interested in them.
This is bang on, and before people start saying we haven't got 5m to spend on 1 player, I'm not takijimg about that I'm talking about decent champ level players 2-3m, if Mcabe and the Prince can't afford to keep a club our size afloat and compete then it's time to sell up to someone who can.

As long as we finish above the filth and 5 places above the relegation zone that'll do me, be really happy if we're top 10, but that's not looking promising at the moment is it.

Bad luck..

That and Tevez.

Thanks for getting it.

I know idea why people are so obsessed with going into debt, there was an article that said that on average every club loses 10m a season, yeah lets go out buying 5m on championship players. but what happens if we are derby QPR Bristol city or Charlton then you slag them off for losing 15m a season. then having to sell players

I see what you are saying, Deadbat. To stay competative, all football teams need to keep improving. Bar Evans (and Wilson, if he comes good) I am not entirely convinced we made great strides in terms of 'quality' during January. Leonard needs to be given time and may well come good (so I'm not judging him yet). But we didnt really sign any established championship players (bar maybe Wilson).

We are good side, we are just two/three championship level players short of being a really good side. If we can get those players in then I wouldnt be worried about next season at all (to relate back to the original post). However, that depends on our board giving Wilder a better budget. And that may well depend on that illusive investment which seems to find it's way to other clubs, and not us.

Let's not forget - the reason why we got promoted from L1 (additional to Wilder being a class manager) was down to having a few top draw L1 players (Sharp, Duffy, Fleck etc). Similarly, you need a few top draw championship players to to get into the PL.

Great idea, where's the money coming from to do that?

I like Duffy when he's on his game but he hasn't been recently has he? When was his last good game, Sunderland?

Duffy had a similar spell last year, where he looked jaded and his form dipped: I think a rest was a good idea.

He is a key player though, and is possibly our most creative player and I'd be very tempted to get him back in the side soon.

By next season we will have cleared out 11/12 and brought a similar amount in. A new keeper, 3 centre backs, left wing back and whole new strike force are needed. If anyone can’t see that you don’t understand football

How are they not keeping us afloat? We're 8th you drama queen.

Even if they did want to sell, do you think there's a long list of wealthy people, with good intentions, waiting to buy us?

When some one with influence comes in they generally make a big splash and create mega hype saying we're going to do X,Y and Z. It generally ends up flatter than a witch's tit after a few years and they get shuffled on and go and create the same sort of hype elsewhere

For me we are playing good football that is far far better to watch than our curly tailed neighbours who have way outspent us. We are a pleasure to watch and I know we are all getting frustrated at the lack of goals that the team produce. If other teams have sussed us they arent stopping us dominatjng play and getting up to the rihht end of the pitch. We just need to get back to form for knocking the last bit of the nail in and I believe it will come and soon. My sons and i have season tickets and I cant think of a match where I can’t be bothered to turn up like the feeling we got in seasons gone by. We are a great club and have a great team. Stick with it kids. Enjoy the football and what will be will be - we’re no way near dropping back into league one. UTB

.

Where’s Wolves’ come from? Where’s Bristol’s come from? Where’s Brentford’s come from?

The decision needs to be made this summer whether we want to progress or settle for being Bransley or Rotherham, win promotion from League one, stay up for two or three seasons then drop back down to League one again. Then repeat.

In the case of Bristol and Wolves, its wealthy owners.

In the case of Brentford, they sell their best player(s) every season (Andre Gray, Hogan, Jota) - would you prefer this strategy?

You're being ridiculous. We're currently 8th, after another transfer window where we strengthened and lost nobody: how is this settling for being Barnsley or Rotherham?

This argument is just circular and will go on for years.

Yes, we could do with owners who can afford to spend more. Of course we could.

The likelihood of finding ones that won't somehow fuck us over in the long term is small.

It's that fucking simple.
