Mousset

I have a lot of sympathy for Mousset.
He clearly doesn't have a great support network around him outside of football, be it friends or family.
Quite clearly didn't have the discipline or maturity to move abroad by himself, as young as he did.

As others have said, a huge talent. In terms of potential, probably the best we've had (Ndiaye & Jack O'Connell are the others in that conversation, for me).
This time, three years ago I thought he was going to be a £50-60m sell off the following Summer. He looked like he had everything.
He seemed really popular amongst the lads in the squad, seemed to always be smiling and joking around (though, clearly to his detriment).
I don't get the joy out of his demise that others seemingly do. I hope he turns things around. I doubt he will though.
Massive shame.
Waste of talent but a very nice kid in person, real shame but he's earning a good living obviously.

I wouldn't waste too much sympathy on him. He'll have done very nicely out of his various moves. FGS he flew over to Italy in a private jet to sign for Salernitana!
He couldn't be arsed to eat properly, train properly and it showed by not finishing a 90 minutes match.
Only one person could solve it and it wasn't his support network, agent or family...it was him.

Appreciate what you're both saying, but I wouldn't trade earning a good living for decent family and friends.
I can't prove that Mousset lacks this but he does seem to lack strong external guidance.

We have never been good at buying an expensive striker to score goals McBurnie although showing his true potential now has taken the best part of 4 seasons and Brewster could end up being the biggest flop since John Ebrell albeit he was a midfielder, I wish I knew the answer we could have Mbappe and he’d be a shot shy!
When have we actually done that, relative to the division we’re in? £20m isn’t a lot of money for a PL striker. Without thinking too hard, I think the last time we paid good money for a striker, relative to the division we’re in, was someone like Alan Young, who I recall cost quite a bit for a third division team, or Keith Edwards the season before. Was Fjortoft expensive at the time? Taylor possibly? Deano’s second coming?

I remember that match against Man Utd at home and he looked completely unstoppable. Thought we'd had Bournemouth's pants down! But he just couldn't push on and keep his fitness levels up. I know a lot of people are saying he's earning a good living, but sadly I'm not sure he'll have much to show for it at the end of his career given his lifestyle and those around him.

I'd say Beattie, J?

He was a Premier League striker in both senses in that he dropped down a level when he signed for us and scored well into double digits for us every season.

I also think at that time £4m was quite a lot of money for a club in the Championship back then in 2007?

Another one (I know!) Ched @ £3m? Granted he didn't do it for us whilst we were still a Championship club, it took until we were in League One when he notched 35 goals. Also granted it didn't quite end well likely costing us promotion when he was sent down. £3m still wasn't a paltry amount even back in 2009 at this level.

But other than these examples, yes I can't think of many other relatively expensive strikers that turned out to be really good for us in meriting the hefty transfer fees we paid for them.

BT’s a great shout, big wages too.

Beattie held the honour of being our record signing for 12 years! So in Sheffield United terms we definitely spent a lot of money on him.

According to transfermarkt (and obviously transfer figures are often undisclosed / rumoured / unconfirmed / made up on the spot so this is to be taken with a pinch) our most expensive strikers ever are:

1. Brewster £26m
2. McBurnie £19m
3. Mousset £11m
4. (I can hardly bring myself to type this but) Burke £6.5m
5. Beattie £5m
6. Ched Evans £3.5m
7. Rob Hulse £3.45m
8. Darius Henderson £3m
9. Billy in 2007 £3m
10. Akinbiyi £2.63 (unless you count Luton Shelton £2.7m as a striker)

The thing with Mousset, at some point earlier in his life he must have put the effort in. You don't get to an elite level of any sport without hard work and sacrifice. I just find it surprising that he's reached that level and  then decided to toss it off.

Transfermarkt record their estimate of the transfer fee in Euros at the time the transfer is made then translate to pounds sterling at the prevailing rate. That frequently inflates older transfer prices.

The list should be:
Brewster £18m (possibly rising to £23.5m)
McBurnie between £17m and £20m depending on performance clauses
Mousset £6-7m
Beattie £4m
Evans between £1.5m and £3m depending on clauses
Hülse £2.7m
Henderson £2m
Sharp mk2 £1.5m (£2m less 25% sell on)
Akinbiyi £1.2m

Burke was valued at around £3m in the swap for Robinson. West Brom paid us £4m plus Oli the Burke for Robinson.

That explains something: I couldn't understand why Beattie was down as costing more than Egan when JE (£4.5m) was widely reported as our record signing at the time.

When he was younger his diet wouldn’t have affected his performance levels quite as badly, but it caught up with him as he moved into his 20s. Its like young English players thinking that drinking alcohol is ok & then not fulfilling early promise.

Yes think he was on 40k per week. Can't remember whether at that time there were any other players in the division on a similar wage.

Also can't remember if/how much Stoke increased his wages when he got 'the flu' in Jan 2009.

A four year contract on a 'modest' £30k/week nets you over £3 million. If someone gave that to me I'd think job done for life as soon as I signed the dotted line! Sadly I think a lot of footballers think the same way, looking for that one deal to set them up 'for life', rather than having that determination necessary to go on and have a great career.

It sickens me that Akinbiyi and Henderson make the top 10.

Beautiful part of France to move to. Those poor Crocos fans though. Will being back in France finally give him the support he needs to revive his career? Probably not.

Career update…

Wilder bringing back the boys. Mousset to come in on loan.
