Crazy thing is that even with the money they earn, most of the time players don’t pay for boots - Nike, Adidas etc. send them boots so kids buy the same boots as their heroes.

In the mid 80’s I had a Saturday job at Alpha Sports in Woodseats. My number one ploy for helping a parent convince their kid to buy the boots we had in stock rather than slog into town was to ask who they supported and then say... “Brian Deane/David Hirst/whoever wears boots like these”. Worked every time.
