Most pointless Blades game attended?

First leg of the league cup, away at Stockport. September 96. Lost 2-1. Vonk might have scored? I'd been on holiday for 2 home games so I decided to go.

Didn't even bother with the home leg which we hilariously lost 2-5, to an Alun Armstrong/Kevin Francis inspired County

Francis had long since moved to Birmingham, Brett Angell was typically partnering Armstrong up top at the time

They proper fucked that up didn't they then in those last 2 games. Made up for it the year after though.

There was three consecutive seasons where we played Swansea right at the end of the campaign.

Swansea at Bramall Lane was our final home game in both 2008-09 and 2009-10, we won both of those.

The season after we played them away on the final day and got tonked 4-0 when we were already relegated.

Shane Lowry got sent off, remember him?

😱

Not united but some anniversary match sheffield FC V Ajax at the lane around 2009. Took my now wife who I'd be on to her about looking forward to this so couldn't just leave and look like a right twat. The whole Laver stand just didn't want to be there and it seemed everyone bought a packed lunch and a flask.

Very bizzare match experience.
Inter Milan not Ajax. October 2007

I went to that 4-0, stayed in Caerphilly for the night. Torrid season that was. I honestly do not remember him one bit to be honest with you. Just googled him and still have no recollection.

v Villa in a friendly in January 1987 on the frosty pitch. Villa's Andy Gray had a neck injury just before half time after falling on the hard pitch. Ref decided during half time to have the match abandoned.
I vaguely remember this, but what I cannot recall is exactly why we were playing Villa in a friendly in January? Both knocked out of the cup?

Imagine us getting knocked out tomorrow and Bettis telling Wilder, don't worry, we've lined up Fulham for a friendly on second round day. He'd be apoplectic.

Sensing a general lack of enthusiasm surrounding tomorrow's night 1925 Cup Final replay.

What was yours?

I'll start.

May 1990 post promotion friendly v Genoa. Most of squad and crowd still half cut from the previous weekend's events at Filbert Street.

All suggestions welcome, unless it's Warnock/Cornwall/Tractor related.
Lolz. I went to that genoa game, fucking terrible match.

League Cup 2004

Sheffield United 0 - 0 Watford
(Watford 4-2 on penalties)

Wow, if ever there was a game where two managers and two teams were trying everything possible to not go through to the next round, this was it.

It was the most dismal, boring match that I've witnessed. I left before the penalty shoot out happened as I was too bored to stay and no longer cared who won.

It was quite common in the 1970s and 1980s for 1st or 2nd division clubs to arrange a friendly match on the 4th round day if they are out of the cup. I remember us playing a friendly at Chesterfield on 4th round day in 1971, played at Israel in 1972, played County Cup final in 1974 and played at Notts County in 1976.

My first ever trip to the Lane was the pre-season vs Benfica after we sold them Deano. I was buzzing expecting it to be a highly charged night of European football only to find there were about four Benfica supporters and a similar number of Blades. We lost 3-1, no one cheered any of the goals. Hooked for life 😆

Took my girlfriend on a first date to see the mighty Blades play Dundee Utd in the Anglo-Scottish Cup. It was midweek and freezing and a full 0-0( could have been 0-1 but god was it dull). No crowd, no atmosphere, neither team turned up. Got dumped after the game. She later developed her own business and sold out for mega millions, if only I’d taken her for a pizza ….

Last match of the 2002-2003 season away at Watford. Massive United following but already guaranteed 3rd. Worse than a friendly and we didn’t even let simon Tracey make a sub appearance.

Christ, I was trying to think of mine and you reminded me of the 0-4 at Swansea. Already down, ludicrously early start....to be fair though it ended up being a cracking day out. Sang our hearts out for 90 mins, conga lines all over the away end, and then our coaches were applauded out of the car park by the Swansea fans after.

Pointless? Maybe.

Still ranks in my top 10 away days of all time. I was absolutely shitfaced even before kickoff 😂

We coukd still get in then. Slim chance but it was possible
I was wondering, couldn't quite remember!

I thought we might have thrown it away losing against Birmingham the match before?

I'd just gone through a hefty break up so I was absolutely hammered for that whole run-in!

United were 5 points from 6th before the Preston game. Break ups are a fucker

I remember a pre-season friendly at Donny. I think Towner made his debut for us. 1983 maybe??? Nowt apiece, dullest game ever. It seemed to last all weekend not just Saturday afternoon. Im bored just telling you about it.

We came out after half hour in was that shite to return to the pub only to find the coppers wouldn’t let us in one , so ended up in an off licence drinking bottles in the street ..looked like the jocks visiting Wembley in 70s

This match below. 0-0. Mate got done for speeding, but we missed the first half anyway.
Other mate got sacked from his job for leaving early to get down there. Stopped at the worst pub ever on the way back and then broke down.

The end of the 1984-85 season was pretty pointless, almost literally. After beating Palace on the 30th March to pretty much guarantee safety in a poor old 2nd division, we drew 3 and lost 6 of the last 9 games, scoring just 4 goals. Two of those goals were in the final game, a 2-2 draw with Huddersfield in which Paul Smith scored his one and only senior goal for the Blades.
