Most Goals in a United Game

Remember United beating Cardiff (I think) 5-3 probably around 2004, made more interesting by the fact it was 0-0 at half time. Have we ever had more than eight goals in 45 minutes before?

We drew 4-4 with tonight's opponents Wallsall late 70s

I've seen eight goals at the Lane at least twice, the aforementioned 4-4 against Birmingham and that bizarre game against Cardiff.

The score was 0-0 at HT and we ended up winning 5-3! Tonge and Richard Langley both scored free kicks, Nuddy got a hat trick (including two penalties), Earnshaw got two for them and the winner, as in fourth goal for us, was a Gazza-esque special from Jack Lester who had come on as sub and was in danger of being hooked again!

Ndlovu had a blinder, remember the game well, got back from crete that morning and had not slept for 36hrs!!!

That Gayle OG is a contender of best OG ever - very like the Andy Barnsley classic.
Gayle got an og in the game at the Lane v Luton too that season. His prowess at og scoring had been asserted two yrs earlier, hoisting it high in the air then beating Mel Rees to it and heading the winnerthat gave scummy Leeds the last ever div one title before the advent of football history with premier league invention.

Probably not, but Man City came close earlier in the season

most I've seen personally. we scored something like 4 goals in the last 10 minutes

My Dad came at the end of the game to give me a lift home. He came in for the last 10 minutes and saw us score 3 times.

I also saw the 6-3 Orient and 5-4 Brighton games, so I have seen 9 3 times, but I missed Northampton.

As for United games involving more than 10 goals, as well as the ones mentioned in this thread there's also a 7-5 home defeat to Blackburn in the 1920s, a 9-2 defeat at Arsenal around the same time, and a 9-1 home defeat to Notts County in the Cup in the 1890s before we were a league team.

No. Stan (I think) had a header from a corner that was going in and their defender did a spectacular dive and caught the ball. There was a pic in the next programme of him holding the ball with a wry smile on his face as the United players appeal. You couldn't possibly get a more obvious pen! He wasn't sent off though. That pen made it 3-3.

We got another pen in injury time as Edwards was chopped down. That was scored as well.

The defender who made the save was John Sitton, of Leyton Orient documentary fame. It was indeed a header from Stan.

And we lost 13-0 at Bolton in the FA Cup in 1890!

Actually Silent, the game was played at the Lane! according to the United's first 100 years record - but Revolution may be right about the £40 bribe to switch the venue.

It was definitely played at Bolton, though we were drawn at home.

Our record home defeat is the 1-9 loss to Notts County I mentioned above.

United paid someone in the 1900s (Swindon I think - EDIT, no, it was Darlington in 1911) to switch to the Lane for a cup tie. We still lost.

If we include reserve games. I saw a 5-5 draw with Sunderland reserves at the Lane in 1987ish. If memory serves Philliskirk got 4 and Withe got the other.

On the reserve game theme, our reserves lost 2-10 to Forest Resreves at the Lane in December 1979. We were 2-0 down, pulled it back to 2-2 early in the second half and then collapsed!

We also lost 10-0 to Villa reserves in 77-8. Our reserves were shit in the late 70's and early 80's. We finished bottom of the Central League for about 4 seasons running.

Name the player who was on trial for us in that Villa reserves match and he went on to play in the 1982 World Cup!

I remember going to a reserves match in the 1970s and we had a keeper on trial that played poorly letting in so many soft goals and then he got subbed I think. Might have been that Forest reserves game you mentioned
