Just a brief update on my ‘Memries of Wigan’ It’s just a couple of months and eleven games since our last meeting on October 27th – a 4-2 home win with a Billy Sharp hat-trick and an own goal by Wigan’s Chey Dunkley.

These three points would see United climb to the summit of the Championship, but two draws and a loss in the following three matches saw us drop down to fifth place.

Tuesday’s game will be only the 18th League meeting between the teams.

To date, our League results against Wigan Athletic read:

Home: P: 9 W: 4 D: 2 L: 3 F: 13 A: 12

Away: P: 8 W: 3 D: 2 L: 3 F: 10 A: 15

Championship Table:

United currently occupy fourth place…

Whereas Wigan sit in 19th place, just four points clear of the relegation places but only five points behind promotion-chasing Sheffield Wednesday…:D

Form Guide:

A good Christmas saw United in seventh place based on the last six league games with ten points out of a possible 18:

…whereas a return of just two points from 18 sees The Latics rock-bottom:

Top Scorers:

Grigg’s er, not on fire but remains Wigan’s top scorer. An unused sub. at Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Swansea, Grigg has made only infrequent appearances and has only ten starts this season - being subbed in 7 of those games.

Significant others:

Lee Evans, currently on loan from us, is expected to complete his permanent transfer to Wigan and face us on Tuesday.

Oft-rumoured to be joining the Blades, Dan Burn will return to his parent club Brighton before the Blades match.

The Manager:

Paul Cook remains in charge at Wigan…for now.

Wigan had been promoted to the football league, that has to be 1981-2 - Silent ? Stood with a couple of Wigan fans on our Kop, they were ok.
Larry Lioyd ex Liverpool and Forest centre half was player manager.
He had them very well organised defensively. Late on summat like 88th minute, Colin Morris managed to get down the right and find Kieth Edwards near 6 yard box. 1 -0 it ended.

If I recall correctly, that was the day we had a free kick in front of the Kop.
Larry Lloyd, who had taken stick all game from The Blades fans, was in the defensive wall.
He pulled the back of his shorts down to show his arse to the Kop and then turned and smiled!!
He got cheers and applause from the Kop. No one was offended and it was all taken in good spirit. He won a lot of respect just for having a sense of humour!
Nowadays the gentle dears would be Twittering in faux horror to the FA demanding a life time ban, followed by social media execution.
UTB.
