This weekend sees the Premier League repeat the opening day fixtures of the season. United were trailing 0-1 to a 62nd minute Chris Mepham goal at The Vitality Stadium before Billy Sharp secured a share of the spoils with an 88th-minute equaliser, his first-ever Premier League goal.

This will certainly not be a ‘stroll in the park’ for The Blades. Bournemouth are showing signs of revival after their injury-wracked season which was epitomised by their 2-1 home win over Aston Villa last Saturday when they were reduced to ten men after Jefferson Lerna (missing for our game on Sunday) was sent off after 51 minutes. Stormy/windy weather is forecast for Sunday.

Meanwhile ex-Blades star David Brooks continues his long injury layoff, will definitely miss our game and is ‘hopeful’ of featuring for The Cherries before the end of the season.

Incredibly, Bournemouth were founded just ten years after the Blades (1899), but have spent the majority of their history bouncing between the third and fourth tier of English football. Our upcoming fixture is just the 15th time the clubs have met – in which time United have only lost once.

Here’s the goals from our 5-3 home win on 1st September 2012 in League One under Danny Wilson:

To show how far Bournemouth have progressed (with the help of a Russian billionaire), on 10th December 1994 this was the table for the Endsleigh League Division Two which would end with Bournemouth escaping relegation to the Third Division by 2 points:

This season is The Cherries fifth-ever in the Premier League. However…In 2016, Bournemouth were found guilty of violating the Football League’s Financial Fair Play regulations during 2014–2015, the season it secured promotion to the Premier League. The club’s over-spend broke the ‘maximum deviation’, with a £38.3 million financial loss in 2014–2015. This followed a loss of £10.3 million in 2013–2014. The club was originally fined £7.6 million by the Football League, but subsequently negotiated a settlement with a fine of £4.75 million for breaching Financial Fair Play rules. The decision followed months of speculation and investigation about the club breaking Football League regulations.

The club is currently owned by Maxim Demin, a Russian multi-millionaire involved in the petrochemicals trading industry.

Last season (2018-19), The Cherries finished 14th in the Premier League with 45 points. This season, injuries have seen The Cherries struggle near the foot of the table and they currently sit in 16th place after a 2-1 win at home to Aston Villa last Saturday.

Not much in it, despite us being much higher in the table.

Men to Watch:

Harry Wilson – on loan from Liverpool who want £25m for his services – is The Cherries top scorer. Callum Wilson remains Bournemouth’s top goalscoring threat and was last season’s top scorer with 14 PL goals. Norwegian Josh King was ‘disappointed’ that a JTW move to Man. United did not come off but remains a key fixture in Bournemouth’s line-up and Nathan Aké is a Dutch professional who plays a key defensive role for Bournemouth.

The Manager:

Under manager Eddie Howe, they have risen through the pyramid; the 2015–16 season was A.F.C. Bournemouth's first ever in England's top division.

A defender before retirement who spent much of his career at Bournemouth, he was the youngest manager in the Football League when appointed Bournemouth manager in January 2009. Howe rescued Bournemouth from relegation out of the Football League in his first season in charge, after the club started the season on minus 17 points, then led them to promotion the next. After a brief spell as manager at Burnley, Howe returned to Bournemouth and led them to two further promotions in three seasons resulting in the club playing in the top flight of English football for the first time in their history. Howe's successes with Bournemouth resulted in him being given the inaugural Football League Manager of the Decade Award in 2015. The departure of Arsène Wenger from Arsenal in 2018 made Howe the longest-serving active manager in the Premier League.

Home game memories v the Cherries:

1987-8 - Bournemouth's first ever game in the second tier. Shaun Brooks scored a late winner for them. Andy Leaning saved a penalty. This remains the only time Bournemouth have ever beaten us in a competitive fixture.
1989-90 - Cup 3rd round. Missed 2 pens but still won 2-0. The first episode of the "United" documentary features footage from this game
1989-90 (league game) - easy-ish win in the last home game of the season, leaving us needing a win against either Blackburn away or Leicester away to go up. You know the rest.
2011-12: cruising until a Simonsen clanger, dropping the ball at their striker's feet having half collided with him, gave us a nervy finish but we held on to win 2-1. Richard Cresswell scored whilst sitting on the floor.
2012-13: 8 goal thriller. memorable for some good goals and Ryan Flynn actually playing well.

Not much in the form table until you look at the fixtures.

They've played 5 of the bottom 6 in their last 6 games.

I was at the Vitality Stadium game in 2013. The pubs round the ground were typically cunty to away supporters (even shirters with kids) so we ended up some way from the ground with a smattering of Blades. We sat out in the garden bit when some bloke stuck his head round the door to ask me for a light, who I now know was Brownie (didn't recognise him but we'd met at Reading some years before)

Surprising one nil win to us and we hit the crossbar too. I think Dominic Poleon came on as sub but that's about as much as I can remember about that pretty piss poor game. But ... three points, Gary.

pommpey

Went down to their place on the special train back in 81, took bloody ages ….. and I lost a few quid at 3 card brag. Great times !!

UTB.

Seen a million misspellings of his last name, but that's probably the first time in S24SU history someone managed to spell his FIRST name wrong.
I meant Bily. As in someone who had bile, dont you recall the stories about acid reflux on the day? Bily Sharp.
He was Bily, he's always Billy, and my, is he Sharp.
