He probably explained our system better than anyone I've heard. Says a lot about opposition Managers who make out they understand it, but patently don't.

I’m find I’m being constantly surprised by teams in the PL. Not many of them have much idea of how to play as a team. That’s ok by me because it is one of the reasons why we’ve started the season so well.
We have cohesion, shape and purpose; our opponents tend to have more expensive players. And that’s the difference. Most of the PL seem to think that if they spend loadsa dosh on more and more expensive players they’ll do better in the league. And then we come along with our team spirit, work ethic and total football plan and confound all their long-held beliefs.

Agree and defenders and full backs in particular can't defend. They can attack but they cant defend. Basics of defending have gradually drifted away. £50m buys John Stones presumably for his ball distribution and classy demeanour, certainly not for any aspect of his defending.

Midfield often dont track runs of Lundstram.

Less contact in the game encourages the trend.

Agree we are receiving massively favourable publicity, the best ive ever known.

On Talksport radio last week Ian “The Moose” Abraham’s was lauding Wilder as one of the best managers in world football. He actually said “this might be controversial but I honestly think Wilder could be the modern day Brian Clough”. He raved about Wilders record and about how he improves every player and plays attacking football.

Danny Murphy was a presenter in the studio and he also said he’s been massively impressed with Sheff Utd how they go to away grounds and attack the game playing good football. He said it looks like Wilder isthe real deal and he can’t understand why a club like Everton don’t try to tempt him away from Sheff Utd, he then apologised to SU fans.

On Monday night it was Catterall and Cundy discussing West Hams season. A WH caller rang up saying they’ve underperformed, so Catterall went through their results to date, he said something like away to Brighton you lost but I’d expect you to win there, “home to Sheff Utd...you drew which is a decent result as Sheff Utd are a good side playing some nice stuff”.

Thought it was weird hearing a neutral pundit telling a West Ham fan that gaining 1 point from a draw at home to Sheff Utd is a decent result and the WH fan agreed. It’s not like the last time we were in the PL under Warnock where we seemed to lose every away match.

Keep having to pinch myself tbh. For years I've watched smalle4 clubs like Brighton, Bournemouth etc rapidly rise through the leagues and consolidate themselves whilst generally playing decent football and thought "Why can't we do that?' Now we finally are and it's a fucking fantastic feeling!

I think quite a few play a 5 with wingbacks, but evidently no one else fully understands the centre back tactic. Firstly, you have to have defenders who are comfortable in possession and proficient in attack, and secondly, the rest of the defence needs to understand how to cover when JOC etc, is marauding.
It will be very interesting to see the first premier team to try and copy it, that's for sure. Just a matter of time. I also think that England would benefit, with the players at their disposal.

Agreed. I think TAA is a poor defender, but a back 3/5 would give him the cover he needs.

Because the best sides can play two centre halves and still use the ‘fullbacks’ as wing backs. Look at how much Robertson and TAA get forward for Liverpool. They provide the width. Firmino, Mane and Salah play quite narrow and are, effectively, three strikers.

Great analysis from the Spurs fan. He's right that we're much better going forward down the left than we are the right. I love Basham to bits, but if the opportunity arises to bring somebody in that's closer to O'Connell's ability, on the right, then we should.

I'd also like us to bring in a RWB that can push Baldock to keep improving. Maybe somebody younger & with more attacking talents. If Norwich go down (& we don't) then their young lad would be perfect... if we could afford him.

Basham would still play a huge squad role for us covering various positions from the bench (RCD, RWB, DCM), & would no doubt make countless appearances coming on to help us disrupt the opposition & protect results. His versatility would also allow us to keep an extra attacker on the bench.
