“We are looking at a division where I know nine or 10 clubs are possibly close to a transfer embargo. Clubs are writing off big money, left right and centre. I have always said that I would never put the club at risk, but I am ambitious and the owners know that.

Surely a plus for the Blades? Either these clubs are very limited in who they can bring in next season, or they have to offload the high earners to sign more players. Win win?

Clubs in this league have been close to Armageddon for the last 15 years; we’ve never managed to take advantage.

True, but perhaps the ingredients are there this time for us to exploit them?

Board backing the Manager
Manager
Managers back room staff
Much needed funds to move up a level?
Belief?

Not enough one might say, but we didn't do too bad this season, so hopeful we can kick on again

QPR are fucked. McClaren pretty much admitted that in his press conference today and spoke about bringing the youth through. Wednesday won't be far off and Rowett leaving Derby for Stoke when he turned them down a few months ago makes you wonder about them too.

The clubs will find a way round it though as always. Money talks and you wouldn't be surprised to see some of these clubs unable to sign players permanently but then go mental on loans.

How many more times is Wilder going to manage to say he's ambitious?

Loads I hope.

If something is important to you it does no harm to remind folks so they get the message.

He’s pushing the boundaries of expectation, just like he’s done from Day 1.

He doesn’t accept failure and sets his sights high. He doesn’t go for “consolidation”. He only wants us to get better.

It’s not a bad approach imo.

Very true Roy...and seems to be in many aspects of life. The vast majority of people who live within their means watching the profligate getting bailed out when the shit hits the fan.

Leicester and Southampton went bust and look how.much harm that caused them! It can't go on indefinitely but it can go on a lot longer than the prudent ever imagine !

Derby, Piggies and Leeds being 3 of em I reckon
I was under the impression that Derby were fairly 'cash rich'. They've made a fair amount on transfers out and the owner is one of the richest in league.

My Forest supporting colleague reckons they've had their budget slashed big time.

Let's say Fulham win the play off's Villa, Boro, Derby are left, the 1st two have parachute payments but even so have spent huge sums of cash Derby have spent a good deal too. Then we have the rest who have spent big, the pigs, Leeds, Brum, Forest, QPR, Hull, Bentford Bristol maybe Norwich too, very few have the crowds to support their levels of spending for long.

I keep reading on how Wednesday pushed the boat out, a guy on twitter has analysed their dealings in a fairly detailed manner and he tweeted the other day that they are in the top 4-5 for spending. The funny part was that the others have all gone up or are in the play offs therefore justifying the spending

The problem with that kind of thinking Is that it can only be short term and a gamble. Clubs like villa, Fulham, Boro and Sunderland take those risks because of the shit loads of cash they earned in the Premier league

Sooner or later that model/ gamble is bound to fail as so many teams try it and only 3 teams can go up. It’s obvious, but the risk is worth it for the reward

It’s when teams like us, Preston, Brentford and Millwall try to come in with our low cost sides that the rich teams get pissed off

That's the enjoyable part. The same applies in the Prem with the likes of Bournemouth, Swansea, Watford, Brighton etc. It was never intended to be that way but they daren't come out and say it.

The surprise package from that lot were Millwall. Nearly made the play-offs with a very small budget.

Derby, Norwich and QPR will be transfer listing quite a few this summer.

Absolute mess at Derby and to a lesser extent Norwich.

I think we’ll see a very different level of spending this season.

Yeah they did but the Co-Op issued a new run of Green Shield stamps to bail them out...

3 books gets you a Gary Hooper.

I'd rather have the Teasmaid if I'm honest.....................

I accept it’s not universally popular, but at some point a big club is gonna go BANG.

It's a point I'm inclined to agree with and you'd imagine logic would dictate that you'd be correct.

But this has been said for years and it still hasn't happened. Sunderland with their enormous wage bill and third-tier relegation have just been taken over, so one would assume their debts are now largely gone and they'll probably be fine now. Bolton have appeared to be on the brink of doom for a long while and still haven't died. Pompey survived (just) and are on the way back.

The jury is out on QPR's future after their £40million fine but I'd never class them as a big club.

Couple this with the likes of the pigs conjuring up magical shell companies to bend the rules and it looks increasingly improbable that any big club will be allowed to go bust. From a fans' point of view I sort of hope it never does, but it really is a case of be careful what you wish for. A lot of fans back massive spending until it comes round and fucks 'em in the wrong 'un.

I hope we can buy some quality then within our budget . 5 million pound striker ..for 2.5 just to balace the books perhaps. Yorkshire prices
