Obviously there have been strong pointers from Eighteen89 et al on that wonderful other board, but here's James Shield...

NICK Montgomery is poised to sign a new contract with Sheffield United, The Star can reveal.
Sources at Bramall Lane confirmed this morning that talks between Montgomery and the Championship club have resulted in a deal, believed to cover the next three years, being agreed in principle.

The development follows a decision by Chris Morgan, another long-serving member of Kevin Blackwell's squad, to also put pen to paper on fresh terms.

An official announcement could be made as early as today.

Montgomery had been one of Leeds' top transfer targets while Middlesbrough were also known to be monitoring his situation.

If true that is indeed good news.
All we need now is for someone creative to partner him in central midfield.
Having said that we never play through midfield so what's the point in that?

Quantity not quality! We should all know that buy now.

Big shame. I assume Leeds have done some proper due diligence and realised the bloke, for all his attributes, cannot control the ball, cannot pass it and makes a fool of himself when he shoots.

Aye, I'm still blushing from his shot against Blackpool at the Lane...

to be honest, i wasnt too fussed whether monty stayed or not. However, once i learned that leeds wanted him, i wanted to keep monty just so they didnt get him! Leeds can have Jordan Stewart instead if they want?

Maybe it was a bad line but I would've sworn that you sounded pleased on the phone when I told you this news earlier.

On SSN as well now.

Could be wrong, but I think it was deflected. Maybe not. If I'm wrong, I'll say that he generally makes a fool of himself when he shoots.

Well before that one that trickled into the net against Blackpool, when was the last time Monty had a shot that was on target/reached the goal?

He had that embarrassing effort early on at Wembley, which in fairness was pretty much as close as we got and wasn't easy.

Other than that, I don't think he ever does, but remember, he aint in the team to pass the ball or score the occassional goal. His job is to give penalties away, give the ball away and run around alot.

Kenny out and Monty in? Are they deliberately trying to drive me away?

Was that before or after he shinned the ball straight to a Burnley player?

Oh yeah, I forgot that was the role of these so called "holding midfielders". That Gareth Barry has a lot to live up to then.

To be honest, I don't know why he didn't take the higher money and do one to QPR.

He'd at least be able to take to the pitch without being mocked by his own.

Very true. Just before I think. How dare you cast aspersions on Monty, the man who looked like he was treading water as he desperately chased back.

His only possible value for me (other than Fulham at home Cooper) is in a 5 man midfield where he doesn't have to carry the ball forward and where the team is getting totally humiliated in possession.

Even Mikele Legs-of-Wood can get away with it down there so there'd be definite hope for Monty ;)

So he'll be invaluable next season then. Case solved. :)

While Legsofwood is still at QPR Monty wouldnt of needed to be worried about being mocked by their fans.

Monty signs a new deal and fans are happy about it.

1. It shows how fickle our fans are
2. It shows how low expectation level really is
3. It shows the quality of football will not get better at the lane

This in no way should be counted as a new signing,

he's worse than a man down.

This is good news. In the paper today that we were looking to line up Bolton's Andranik Teymourian as a replacement (I know, I know. Nobody's ever heard of him but he must be crap if he's linked with us...)

A bit of brinkmanship going on I feel. Perhaps that's why KB, TB and K McC are on such big salaries. They don't shit themselves when they get unfounded texts from a friend of ITK's dog.

For the past couple of seasons, well maybe to an extent not last season. We have had high hopes of promotion so there isn't and shouldn't be many times where we are getting battered possession wise.

So we don't need that extra man in midfield. If the guy could actually tackle and pass to team-mates consistantly then yes, he'd be a valuable player, and would welcome him re-signing with us. But the guy blows hot and cold far too often, and alot of the time it is like playing with ten men, nine if you count that useless ginger one.

If he had the chance to join QPR for more money, or Leeds, his home town club, it's proof of admirable loyality on Monty's part. However I hope we're not CONTINUING our policy the last few seasons of paying some individuals so much that the rest of the budget leaves a squad with many gaps and weaknesses.

With the amount of 'encouragement' you give the club, then maybe that's the plan.

I'll excuse your insult on the basis that you are upset by any comment concerning Monty that falls short of comparing him favourably to Michael Essien.

Absolutely gutted. As mentioned above, we can't even give him away. Looks like nothing came of the "huge level of interest shown in him". Shame.
