SHEFFIELD United chief executive Trevor Birch does not believe his desire to balance the books will have an adverse effect on the calibre of candidates vying to become the South Yorkshire club's next manager after sources revealed that Sean O'Driscoll, Phil Brown and caretaker John Carver are being considered for the post.
Birch, one of the game's most respected administrators, was speaking as the search for Gary Speed's replacement gathered pace ahead of tomorrow's Championship encounter with Swansea City.

Revealing that United have already received "numerous expressions of interest" after the 41-year-old resigned his position to take charge of Wales, Birch said: "This is a great job and we have a long-term strategy to get to where we want to be."

Despite Birch's refusal to elaborate on United's plans, The Star understands that Doncaster Rovers' O'Driscoll and Phil Brown, previously of Hull City, are among those names being discussed by Bramall Lane's board of directors. Both have proven track records of being able to produce results on limited resources, with O'Driscoll transforming United's neighbours into one of the division's most attractive sides since arriving at the Keepmoat Stadium.

"We've not had any approach from Sheffield United and I wouldn't welcome one," Rovers chairman John Ryan said yesterday. "If we do, I would notify Sean. Personally don't think it would be a good move for him at this moment ... because Sheffield have a poor team. Would they give him time to sort things out?"

Brown is known to be interested in taking the job Speed vacated earlier this week and also performed wonders on a small budget before guiding City into the Premier League

Bobby Davison, the former Ferencvaros coach, is understood to have applied.

:D:D

If ever a manager had a head start in the good will stakes... :)

Bobby, Bobby, Bobby Davison!
