I'd be disappointed if we continued along the same lines of paying players like France, Taylor, Stewart, etc. etc. good money whilst letting monty go over a few grand a week. It's time to clear out the crap in our squad not the core.
This brings our dealings at the end of the Summer transfer window to mind. We managed to get rid of Hendrie, Carney, Fordy and Bromby, whilst bringing in Harper (universally welcomed at the time) and Stewart (who we had to take in order to get rid of Hendrie, and is I guess cheaper).
That was some good clearing out of crap. Hendrie and Carney haven't contributed to their new clubs, and Fordy has only helped at Reading when they've been on TV, like when he was with us. With the benefit of hindsight, keeping Bromby would have been very useful, but he was still not as good as our first choice centre halves at that time.
Sadly, this dead wood was replaced by more dead wood. France has hardly played and looks a poor player. Reid and Little have been given virtually no opportunities. Taylor looks a poor player at this level. So does Stewart. Fortune is terrible.
It's like Blackwell can't help himself. Even if he did as Blade suggests and gets rid of the bunch in the preceding paragraph, his form this year suggests that we'd just end up with more of the same rather than keep or sign better players (or, giving Blackwell the benefit of the doubt, he would not be given funding to sign better players).
I am actually getting very worried about the likely quality of next season's team. I don't care for Monty as a player but I'd rather have him than the 2010-11 version of Ryan France.
