Mistakes

Firstly, this isn't a thread having a whinge or necessarily criticizing our defence. More just a general comment on the goals we've let in this season.

We have one of the best defences in the country and clearly one of the tightest, but the odd thing is that many of the few goals we've let in this season have been genuine mistakes, mix-ups, clangers etc.

The obvious one against Liverpool, but also both of the goals against Chelsea and yesterday against Spurs. Arguably Southampton's goal was the result of a mix-up too.

Is it a measure of how we play? Maybe we're still a bit nervy on the bigger stage? Ultimately, without these errors (and again, it's not a criticism) we could have more points on the board and even less goals conceded.

I genuinely believe our defence is even better than what the stats show.

Some are almost due to not being nervy enough I think.

So relaxed about possession and play in and around our own box, we don't always shout loud enough or consider the safety first approach.

No harm in conceding a throw or corner when the other option is a loose ball in 4 yards out from goal.

Got to agree with you many of the goals conceded have ultimately come from defensive clangers. Strange to see so many (50%) when our defensive play is some of the best in the country. I wouldn’t say Southampton or West Ham were clanger type situations, IMO those goals were more of a trade off of us going forward aggressively and being exposed on the break, this has happened a few times this season already. Sure oli could have taken one for the team has could have Basham at West Ham, which Btw we saw more of a willingness to do this yesterday from both players.

Leicester = 1 goal
Chelsea = 2 goals
Liverpool = 1 goal
Tottenham = 1 goal

moreover, the five goals less conceded, think about the points we theoretically would have gained (I know football does not work like that) 7 extra points gives use a total of 24 points one behind Man City And 7 clear of 6th place.....Crazy I’m starting to think Chris is somehow supernatural. UTB!

I do wonder what Egan was thinking yesterday. It looked like he thought 'Enda's great, there's no way he's just made a mistake. I'll let this play out. ' As you say, very relaxed.

They are human beings, not robots. Human beings make mistakes. Our goals against suggest that we make fewer mistakes than most. This isn’t even really an issue. Yes, we try to reduce the number of mistakes but perfection in that regard isn’t achievable for any team in the world.

Can't understand why egan moved out of the way of the pass that was surely meant for him ?

Of the 9 goals concerned 6 have been gifts with the ones you mentioned and bash's indiscretion against Leicester added in
If you wanted to be really harsh you could add snodgraass's goal which included several individual mistakes but I suppose every goal has an element of someone somewhere not doing their job properly
