Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Let's be fair, if Phipps was to communicate what he's thinking and how he feels these days, he'd embarrass his manager, and that would be no good to anybody.
He's confirmed the manager will be backed with cash in January. In effect we are all in a state of limbo until we get the new players. The current squad knows that all too well and the fact we need reinforcements is down to the manager and his mediocre signings since the end of last season.
The unwritten sub-plot says something like " things have not gone to plan and we are bailing out our manager because we still believe in him. ( maybe not as much as 6 months ago, but we do nevertheless. Our hopes now lie in the lottery of the play-offs and that was not in the original script. The prince is not too happy in truth, but he understands and will be patient. There will be a review of performance at the end of the season, but we feel we have a quality manager and do not disregard his cup achievements).
