Misleading 1st day performances

First game of the season has a bit of a Cup-tie element to it.

Most teams up for the opening game after weeks of prep.

But they can’t manage a Cup-tie every week and so over time some fall away and those who can fall back on actual quality remain.

You might get an occasional team who can keep that high motivation, for instance Ipswich as a promoted team had momentum and kept it going. You could even argue our 9th place finish had some of that element.

What pleases me about United though is we have signed some quality players.

When the buzz of a new season has gone, we’ll have that quality to fall back on.

It’s not a formality but already seeing opposition fans like Leeds saying how our team wins it. Far too long to go, but if you’re getting compliments from one of your traditional rivals then you’re clearly doing something right!

I keep reminding myself to temper the excitement of Friday nights dominance with memories of how much a poor team can make you look miles better than you are.

The quintessential example surely being the opening and only victory of David Weirs 13 game reign against Notts County.

Here so many of our fans were thinking we’d suddenly turned into the tiki taka champions elect of league 1, completely ignoring the part our horrific opposition played in having no structure or ability to pressure the ball and essentially provide an escort service for our players to pass around the pitch like a training exercise.

Plymouth were like that against the pigs with the added bonus that they were stupid enough to try and play out from the back for 90 minutes.

Preston at least tried to kick and disrupt us but Christ were they utterly talentless on the ball.
I mostly agree, however, winning comfortably when you’re not at your best is a good sign.

It’s a new team, we bedded 4 new players in to the team & changed the system for the old ones. The thing we’re rightfully excited about is we’re signing good players again & Wilder seems to have that fire in his belly again.

It’s just nice to see us win & keep a clean sheet.

This is exactly why professionals don't get too up when they win; or too down when they lose. Every game is played in isolation. Our performance against Preston is irrelevant to tonight's game. Tonight's performance has no bearing on Saturdays game. Win, lose or draw you consistently hear managers talking about moving on and concentrating on the next game, ignoring media noise and concentrating on messages from the manager and coaching staff. Of course matches are where the process is tested in the real world, and it also generates data regarding player fitness levels etc that inform the process; but trying to predict how we will do in a match based on the performance of a previous match is a fools errand (and how bookies never lose!!).

I'm hoping Burnley's was a misleading performance last night.

I think there's still some to be gleaned from the Preston game.

- There is actually pace in our team now, and we seem able to counter attack very well;

- Retaining possession, particularly via the Souza/Blaster partnership, was very solid. Both looked comfortable under pressure, and were keen to find passes where possible to progress us up the pitch;

Defensively we looked okay; Preston never truly put the pressure on, but there were one or 2 moments where they were able to get a shot off too easily - this could be a concern against a stronger side.

Thought we were decent overall, although Preston allowed us to be that to a degree through their poor performance. Whether them playing badly is their own issue, or as a result of our display, is another question altogether.

That said, I'd hope that Wilder and the coaching staff can look back at the game, and use it as material to improve us individually and collectively. As there were still a lot of moments where we made small mistakes (mainly misplaced passes, not uncommon for a team with several new signings and a brand new tactic).
The thing that I really liked from the game is that we had multiple players who seemed to want the ball and looked to move into space to receive it.

It felt that for the last few seasons our players would find their man and stick to them, not the other way round, but we might actually be able to play out from the back now because the players in front of the defence are actually looking to make space.

Good word 'quintessential'

It is, but because it means “the best example”, there is no need to say “the quintessential example”, otherwise you’d have a tautology on your hands. Better to say “The quintessential misleading opener was…”.

Yeah, new kit, sparkling new stand, hot day, Jim Brown saved a Bruce Rioch Penalty (see below). Eddy gave us the lead, Charlie George hit a late equaliser with a screamer.

I thought we were going to be in the top division for ever!

I think weve put that period behind us having made the top division four times since then
I for one cant imagine us being as badly run as we were 1975 to 1980

Exactly, that is what the original post mentioned. I clearly remember that game and the hope that we would have a decent season. Truth be told, when you look back at the players we had in the side in those days, we didn't really have a realistic chance. As for Blade Too Long commenting on other user's spelling etc....give me a brake ;)
