Minority over majority phenomena

Always interests and irks me why so many of our supporters prefer to use a very small minority of our fanbase as the benchmark for 'ahh fans'.

Last night I heard about three annoying individual comments during the game but witnessed plenty of noise and encouragement when Fulhams goals went in.

I saw CCV get a great reception when being subbed. I joined in with thousands of others giving the team a standing ovation at the end.

The support last night in general was far removed from under Adkins.

Yet last night and today I'm reading more comments about 'arr fans' being crap etc than the positives.

Do people really expect every single person out of 25000, some drink fuelled or match wound up, to be perfect.

It's about time we appreciated what we've got instead of constantly looking to knock ourselves based on a very small minority.

I think you’ve got to be capable of taking a bit of criticism surely?

I don’t think you can benchmark Bramall Lane’s current atmosphere against Adkin’s days, they were anomalous as they were the darkest of times. I think you benchmark it against BDTBL being, by repute at least, up there as one of the best atmospheres in the 92. If things are comparatively flat and that point is made, why are we so sensitive about it? I want every Away fan to come away from the ground raving about the atmosphere. As Wilder says we’re a proper football club!
 
It's like owt.

A few Blades get a bit too excited about being top of the league and it's 'them Blades are giving it large.'

A Blade kidney punches someone and it's 'They're' orrible bastards them Blades.'

A few have a go when we're 5-2 down at home and it's 'our fans are proper shithouses.'
 
During Adkins and other managers eras ,there was always a sainsburys bag blowing around the pitch to keep you entertained ,either the plastic bag surcharge is biting or Im just not noticing them anymore.
 
I thought the atmosphere was pretty flat until the last few minutes.

We went 1-0 up and it seemed like it was to be expected and we were just gonna go through the motions as fans. L I don't get to as many home games as some, but comparatively to earlier in the season last night was flat when it desperately needed to be the opposite.
 
Having said that, I work with the public and it's amazing how many absolute idiots there are in Sheffield. Some at best are just idiots, and others are borderline mentally warped.

If anyone uses social media, it's absolutely incredible how many people simply can't string a sentence together or spell the most simple of words. It's not even a minority.

Some are obviously going to be Blades.
 
Seemed a very quiet crowd in the 1st half on tv.I was expecting a noisy bunch especially as Wilder had asked pregame about getting behind the team.
 
I wonder how much the flat start to the game was due to the crowd having to start GCB without the music. I don’t think it’s an excuse, and I don’t want to start a debate on whether it’s a bit cringey playing the music, I’m just stating that it wasn’t the usual routine. Sincs seemed to be pelting through our subs without numbers as the game kicked off, why was he so behind on announcing the teams?

Didn't even bother singing Coutts' song until 21 minutes in. I thought it would've taken about 30 seconds. I should know better by now. Especially after the morgue like first 15 minutes against Wolves - 3 days after we won the Sheffield derby in such style.

The first half was flat as fuck. It always is. It's a big reason why I want to get something going in the BLUT.

On the Kop Gangway G at least make a bit of an effort but those just to the left of them in E/F don't bother. Which is a shame, because they need to in order for any chants to spread towards the middle. If anyone's to blame for the Kop's poor atmosphere it's them.

Mind you, Gangway D is pretty useless as well. About 5 or 6 bother singing and that's it.
 
I’ve watched the Blades all over the country and our home support is far better than most. Our away support is second to none given the shite we have endured for most of the last 40 years. Home fans just don’t sing constantly. Some teams’ fans barely sing at all. Why some constantly knock our support is baffling.
 
Well,I was in the BLUT and thought the atmosphere was excellent, even after the Fulham goals there was a groundswell of vocal support as though everyone thought the same thing at the same time.
We don't seem to be as suicidal as we were after the away team scores,there's a confidence hanging around like ah well we'll pull it back..so no problem .
Even at 2-5 there was genuine hope that we'd pull it back,and that a point wasn't too bad!
When did we last think like that ?
I didn't even think about leaving early. .and I admit that I have a few times in the past
There's definitely a buzz about the lane even when 3 goals down ,with little time left.

That's because there are some precious, squealing cunts on here who feel that they are better than everyone else.

I noticed a few in the pitch at Portman Road last night.
 
It's because the vocal minority going against the flow can be heard above everyone else and it can annoy someone who has to sit and listen to it for 90 minutes. It's the same in most things. The noisy neighbour is not cancelled out by 10 quiet neighbours. The dangerous driver overtaking you at 80 in town doesn't fade into a background of 100 decent drivers pootling along at the speed limit. These are the people you complain about because they annoy you, which is perfectly normal, so people moaning about tossers in the crowd is as inevitable as those tossers being a part of the crowd in the first place.

I'd agree with that in general.

Seems though that many of those who choose to pick faults with our fanbase like to generalise, and make out those they're complaining about are a higher number than they are. If some twat picks a fight with you in the pub for no reason, you wouldn't come home and make out a quarter of the boozer were at fault.

Reference the usual suspects on this thread who regularly pick at our fanbase. I've no idea what they aspire us to, maybe watching too many Turkish and South American games on YouTube.

If someone picked a fight with me in a pub, by the time I got home it would definately have increased to four. At least. All big fuckers with tattoos and everything.

I think we were slightly taken aback by how much quality and work rate we were witnessing from Fulham.The game took on a surreal quality,slightly disorienting at times but great value for money.

Disagree with the former statement. Bramall Lane when rocking is a special ground. It’s worth 10 points a season in my eyes. We’re capable of just blowing teams away.

If Stoke can do it in the Prem and effectively build up a reputation for a quality atmosphere, there’s no reason why we can’t top it given we’re already halfway there.

Most big grounds are 'special' when they're rocking though. Our supporters are no better and no worse than any other supporters.
 
 
It's just opinion though, articles designed to get people to read them, it's not definitive. In my opinion it's like any other big ground when the club is doing well or there's a big match like a derby. It can be brilliant at times, sometimes not so great.

No it’s not definitive, but in the case of FootballGroundGuide, Pochettino, 4-4-2 and other stuff from Henry Winter, Oliver Holt etc they seem identify us over other clubs. There’s a body of evidence. I can’t see any reason why 442 magazine would list our atmosphere so high up over other clubs. When I speak to footie fans from other clubs at work, they rate the BL atmosphere highly. I’d say the same about Fratton Park and Elland Road for example.

I don’t see what you’re arguing against. On one hand you’re saying that atmosphere is nothing special at BL and on the other you’re taking umbrage at constructive criticism of it?

You seem to be interpreting 'nothing special' as me saying it's a bit shit but I'm not. I'm saying that most big stadiums can have a great atmosphere when things are going right. I'm not sure if that's the case for the London Taxpayer's Stadium and probably won't find out for a long time but I've been to quite a few that have a good atmosphere.

But as a whole 'match day experience' the Lane is certainly up there, not just because of the atmosphere but the location, not being an identikit bowl, the stands being close to the pitch. Don't get me wrong, I'd recommend it to anyone.
