One of my favourite players of that era. Formed a great partnership with Alan Birchenall.
Good times.
That could have been an exciting time if we hadn't broke it up with selling Jones & then Birchinall.
Two very young strikers in a very young team ,the old guard which got us up a number of years earlier were being eased out
unfortunately selling our too strikers were in demand and by selling we left ourselves vulnerable to relegation which duly arrived as the young team lacked the experience to get over the loss.
It was a good set up with local produced players making up most of the squad.
Our home form went down the pan as the pressure increased towards the end of the season approached. From memory I think we had 5 of our last 7 at home but couldnt win any ,the young team crumbled in front of a critical blades home crowd.
We even beat Liverpool at Anfield in the run in towards the end but the young team crumbled at home with the pressure.
I remember well a night game against Fulham at the lane, they were bottom and stayed there! we were winning 2-0 with 15 mins to play and lost 3-2 the writing was on the wall after .

I was gutted when he went to Leeds. He and Sherman were a reight unit. Doesn't he live North Anston way?

"Don Revie swooped in the summer of 1967. "
"the fans so incensed that they staged a protest outside the ground."
:)

He started with Dinnington Miners Welfare and seem to remember the Blades paid £75 for him as a 17 year old. When he got married at Dinnington Church a few years later it was a big deal for us Blades at school and remember congregating outside the Church to see a famous Blades player at close quarters.
He ran a sports shop at Maltby after retiring from L***ds.Wonder how many of the current England internationals will need to open a sports shop when they’ve done ?

I once had the misfortune to sit very close to him and Tony Currie whilst on a corporate do at Bramall Lane.

What a right pair of moaners they were, nothing any United player did was good enough for them.

I was sat outside in the JSS for that first half experience but after half time I stayed inside and watched from behind the glass just to avoid have to listen to their continual whinging.

And I'd been so excited at the start when I found myself within hearing distance of two legends from my young days.

It's one of the reasons I've never been interested in getting to know any of the players. Having said that, I got to know one or two, through football training, mutual friends and on one occasion, work. I love watching them and admire the talent that they have at football, but if you get to know them and they turn out to be toss pots then it would spoil things a bit for me. I see a couple of the current first team squad pretty regularly - not to talk to - but they live in the same area as me. In fact, I was working from home yesterday and looked out the window to see Lys Mousset slowly jogging past. Less than 5 minutes later, he's running back the other way. I felt like going out there and telling him to put a bit more effort in!

He had a sports shop in Maltby for years in the 80s and 90s ,he worked on his own in the shop most of the time ,great bloke.

This brought back a memory I had forgotten about.

After learning of the sale of Mick Jones I went down to Bramall Lane that evening and simply walked around the exterior of the ground. Cannot recall how many circuits I did and why I did it. No one else was doing it, I was simply all alone.

My dad was a huge fan of Jones, used to say he was better than Currie. There was a particular goal he scored against Newcastle (I think) which he used tot talk us through every now and then. When United sold him my dad was 16 going on 17 and was one of those who went down to the ground to protest. Afterwards they used to sing "Send Dick Wragg to Vietnam" to the tune of Michael, Row the Boat. Dad said that when Jones won stuff with L**ds "It was like seeing a lass you'd been mad about having a great time with someone else". On the other hand, he said Revie used him as a target man and Jones lost a lot from his game. After we did the same thing with Currie in 1975, dad said that he hated L**ds more than anyone, including the Pigs. When I was a kid we heard that Jones ran a pub in Worksop and dad planned to drive the family out there to meet him. Years later, he phoned Sky to complain when they were showing a United match, cut to Jones in the stand, and captioned him 'Former L**ds United'. There is a very good book about Jones by David Saffer.

And successive boards over the last 50+ years still haven't learnt the lesson. Let's hope this current lot step up to the mark to ensure Wilder gets backed with what he wants and we don't start flogging off the family silverware.

Jones and Birchenall in that early 70s team plus a little more luck with injuries to Powell and McAllister and we'd have been looking at a really excellent United team back then.

yes sir as did aye, but as luck would have it len badger and alan birchinall were also there and more than made up for it ….

Joe Shaw was my favourite Blades player when I first started going to the Lane. Once Mick Jones replaced Doc Pace and started scoring as he did then he became my favourite.

I was absolutely gutted when we sold him. I literally couldn't understand.

I've been watching quite a few Brian Clough documentaries on You Tube which involves his time at Leeds and his total disrespect for the way Leeds went about their business. To be fair to Mick Jones I never really saw him as one of those dirty cynical players like Bremner, Hunter, Charlton and Giles.

It would have been great to see Mick play alongside TC. Mick left the Lane about 4 months before signed TC and even at Leeds Mick retired October 1975 and TC joined Leeds in June 1976.

A decent bloke in a team of cheating thugs at Leeds, he would have been better off going to Man Utd. Leeds fuckin Leeds deary me.

The transfer of Jones and Birch was the most upsetting of my time following United. I was really angry because they were such a formidable and exciting partnership. If only we had kept them together at The Lane!

" if Mick Jones goes so do we " " resign Dick Wragg"

I sat next to Mick Jones for lunch before a game. Found him OK and asked him a daft question, sort of, remember when you........Mick? Afterwards I felt sorry for the bloke. A former England International getting £100 or whatever having to answer the same daft questions every two weeks, then having to watch some forward who wasn't fit to polish his boots earn half a million a year.

Don’t have any time for players who went to Leeds. The thugs he played with treated him will little respect when he scored the winning goal at Wembley but dislocated his shoulder in the process. They left him and celebrated with themselves. Nasty club Hope they are left in the championship this season And become the new “unlucky club”.

I was one of the many yoofs who went down to the lane to protest that day, chanting that very ditty.
At that time, I had a troll or gonk thingy with Blades colours (yeah,I know)...
That night I decided it resembled Dick Wragg, so I made a minituare noose and symbolically hung him in my bedroom... the next day I threw him away. I still went to the next match though ☺
