Following on from last weeks 'view from Oxford' where one of their fans hilariously described Appleton as the 'Tomorrow Man' of football management, I thought it would be fun to keep tabs on him, so that we're not missing out on what this visionary has to offer.....

This may belong in some other part of the forum, so what, sue me!

Last week after defeat to the mighty blades, Michael defiantly proclaims that his side still have a chance of making the play-offs......

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/39207369

A mere 7 days later and after another defeat, it appears Michael has changed his mind.....

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/39278847

It's fairly obvious to me that we are in the midst of one of the great philosophers of the game.

Never been a lover of Appleton . Another manager who seems to walk into jobs when not doing or achieving a lot .

The only thing I can say about your post , thank fuck he is at Oxford United and not Sheffield United .

McCabe and Co could have quite easily fallen for his 3 card trick aka Madkins .

Your missing the point, tomorrow never comes, you never get to tomorrow, you only ever get today!!;)

Well done the OP. In the space of a few days Appleton has gone from extolling the talents of his team to suggesting they're not up to the job. Hardly the type of manager to get the best from his players. I see he also touched upon the quality of the pitch, maybe food for thought for those who question the wisdom of laying the Desso.

Not that it was likely, but the fact that Appleton is at Oxford shows that we probably missed a bullet. Long may Wilder and Knill reign! UTMB

Certainly is a visionary and a true philosopher and what that other word for him is it Cock Womble?

"my players are going to do it and fire us and get promotion"

Thinks "Shit I got it wrong"

"these journey men look second best and we will rebuild for next year" almost as bad as Carlos "I Have a dream"

To be fair he's done a decent job at Oxford - getting them out of L2 last season, not far off the L1 play-off places this season, a good cup run this year and JPT final last year and this. He's been helped by the funds from the sale of Roofe to Leeds and O'Dowda to Bristol City but he's signed several decent young players who will improve and used the loan market wisely.

Of course, I wouldn't even dream of swapping him for CW though.

"There were one or two players out there who looked jaded on a pitch that was difficult at times."

This was Appleton's quote about the Oldham pitch - we might have to resort to HOOF :(

UTB

Imagine my dismay at discovering that this thread has nothing to do with quality engineered and accurate time pieces :(

Quality engineered? Accurate? In Appleton's case more like this:

"We're short and well-short at the minute," Appleton said.

That's the clinching statement for me; why is this man not the England manager by now?

It's right up there with SemiPro after a comprehensive 0-3 at Blackpool. "I thought we were the better side second half".

"What are you going to do to turn it round" asked the hack.

"Hope the ball bounces for us" exclaimed the former non-league reserve goalie.

"We shouldn't have sacked him", I hear one or two say quietly. No, that's right, we should have fucking tarrred and feathered him.

Strange, Oxford have a XtraGrass pitch like at the Ricoh it is claimed they are better than a Desso o_O just sounds like another excuse from an average at best manager to me.

thought I would sicken my self and have a look on the Oxford Forum (Yellows Forum), some rave reviews for Appleton "The tomorrow Man"

"I remain unconvinced by Mr Appleton's abilities"

"Defeat was expected. Sacking him this week or next?"

"I have lost faith in him being the man to take us forward"

"Sorry but I think enough I enough he has had time, He has had resources, He hasn't used the resources."

"IF we lose next week, patience finally exhausted."

"Did you expect to lose that one to.... Wake up..... Appleton Out"

"Sorry! He has to go. If I could see something that gave me hope that things were improving maybe not"

They change their minds quickly too. In the 'View From...' last week, they were almost proclaiming him as the chosen one.
Obviously Oxford fans and Appleton are a good fit.

I took the quotes a little out of context and time frame, they do still love him very much in fact have a little name for him "MAPP" I could not read too many of the he is god quotes, made me feel quite sick so I thought I would look at some of the old quotes, and the love was not there at first they hated the man!

but now they do very much love him.

Just to balance it out...

These are comments about him being eye'd up for the England U21 role,

"Appleton is still yet to finish the job here, so it would be disasterous for us to lose him at this point. Hope somone else gets the nod.
...But Don't worry, i hear justin edinburgh is available
."

"The only plus side to this would be I'd happily have gary rowett if we could nick him before hull do"

"if he wants to take that job, good riddance.
it's a crap role where you spend months on end twiddling your thumbs and when you do get a game you don't work with the best players.
in short, a job for those who don't back their ability for the hard, and ultimately rewarding, graft of work at the coalface.
that doesn't sound like Mapp to me
"

"Appleton came here to rebuild his reputation. He's had plenty of short-term jobs at clubs with major board/financial issues and he said he needed to stay here long-term.

What do you class as long-term in football nowadays? Out of 92 he's the 17th longest serving manager. He's rebuilt our playing squad over a season and earned a promotion playing quality football.

You could also argue he's now established us as a solid mid table League 1 team in our first season up, still playing the correct way. He's clearly got the ability to developing young English players, he fits their bill perfectly but why would he leave OUFC now?"

"He's a highly rated coach at that level from his time at wba, didn't Man Utd offer him the head of their academy role as well. Funny how people assume maguire will leave as he wants to play higher, and hylton left as he wants more money and got a family to think about, yet when it comes to Appleton he will stay as he will want to finish the job? Like tbfuth14 says he's already repaired his reputation, he wouldn't even be being linked if he hadn't"

"Mapp also worked very closely with Dan Ashworth at wba academy who is now the FA’s director of elite development."

"Mapps is to good for that job anyway. He's really starting to show what he can do. He's also doing it the right way working from the bottom to the top! Hopefully with this club. "

"He deserves the accolades he gets, Considering his first 5/6 I along with others were seriously questioning his credentials, well I for one am glad to say I was wrong, Well done MAPP's and long may it continue."

"On the 8th day God gave us MAPP and the world was a happy place"

and on that Sickening last note, I am going to wash with really hot water and bleach, I think they love him a little too much!

Didn't Appleton have some sort of altercation in the tunnel against their (very) bitter rivals Swindon a while back? Got a black eye or something.

The like is for the effort on your part, not the quotes you collated!
