Zonal marking is the norm in modern football. Here's a brief introduction for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marking_(association_football)
OK as loathe as I am to use your Wikipedia link I'll take a quote from it.
"Zonal marking is more difficult when defending set pieces such as free kicks and corners". If you are talking open play then Zonal is quite often employed and has been for some time (often a manager will do a "when the ball is here, you need to be here" sort of team talk), but when you are talking set pieces that theory is shafted. You watch any match up in an area and its man to man. Thats what I am talking about because its there where we are falling down.
Now I haven't played the game in a while I'll grant you but zonal defending at set pieces was unheard of amongst anyone who ever wanted to win anything. It was generally the preserve of nutbags and people who had read a lot of books but never actually played the game.
