Agree it wouldn’t be for me, but give it a generation and a club established in the PL would comfortably pull 50-60,000 per week.

We’d just be a plastic Newcastle. Clubs like Arsenal and Spurs benefit from having big stadiums because they can charge around £1,000 for an ST and stupid amounts for corporate hospitality. Just having a big ground won’t make a club successful. It might have been relevant in 1990 but it won’t make a great deal of difference these days when the actual successful clubs have got global income streams.

Quite a few famous foreign clubs are the result of mergers, such as FC Copenhagen, PSG, Sampdoria and Roma. I think that a fair few Turkish clubs like Trabzonspor and Bursaspor were the result of local teams merging to get into Super Lig.
Personally I don't feel that the pigs have any assets worth having. No ground, shit players and loads of debt. Obviously there would be their world wide fanbase of millions, but seeing as very few of them can make it to the sty, I doubt we would attract many of them.

You can only charge good whack for corporate, or have access to any global income streams, if you are in the top flight. Rightly or wrongly, a single Sheffield club would be a sustainable proposition in the PL. It’s sad, but true.

2 clubs? City of Liverpool manages it where City of Bristol doesn't. Leeds is having a bit of a time in the sun, but they are a 1 club city and still only get 30,000 on a very good day

It boils down to the owners and how much they have to spend, and over a consistent period. Blackburn for example was only ever going to be a short-term blip based on some mad scrap man's hopes and dreams. All we need is a bonkers Qatari Hedge Fund and we're sorted ;-)

TBF to Newcastle in the 5 (?) PL seasons we’ve had in the last 30 years they’ve had a title run, Champions League and UEFA cup runs and some decent top half finishes. That would be the best run of our history comfortably.

At a time when the size of a club was determined by gates, then yes, but it's too late for that now. There's little doubt that if there had always been one club here then we'd have probably been up there with biggest in the country, competing for the league title and European Cup. But there have always been too many clubs for too few resources in South Yorkshire - even Rotherham once had two clubs - so our passion for football was our undoing. If the two Sheffield clubs merged now you'd have a new club with no history, and financially it wouldn't bridge the gap so we'd probably be a Newcastle. The only merger worth talking about around here would involve Sheffield FC, as has already been mentioned. The Arabs were going to pour a fortune into Notts County, but then discovered that although they are the oldest league club, they're not the oldest so the deal collapsed. To challenge a club needs a Sheikh Mansour, and only Sheffield FC would be capable of attracting one in this city. If either Sheffield club teamed up with Sheffield FC, then realistically the other would have little choice but follow suit or become an irrelevance. Losing the Sheffield Derby for the PL title and European Cup is worthy of debate, but losing it to become a Newcastle certainly isn't.

The merger club would be competing for fans from 2 potential phoenix clubs created by United and Wednesday fans who were against the idea.

I think it would be more a case of shutting down and transferring assets than merging.

But it's a sobering thought that in the modern game Sheffield FC are the city's biggest asset.

But if Wednesday and United were shut down and their assets transferred to Sheffield FC, with Sheikh Mansour II coming in, then the phoenix outfits wouldn't have a hope of competing. They'd be old blokes' clubs because the young would support Sheffield FC, a club which would have global support and massive media attention. On that score, imagine Yorkshire Television...

I'm sorry to bring up this controversial subject but maybe we should consider merging with our neighbours, I know its contentious but please consider my plan,
The split should be 50 50 so in the interests of fairness we should split the current names therefore we will keep the following:
:
Sheffield from their name and the United from ours.
We should keep the white stripes from their kit and the red stripes from ours

We should keep Bramall Lane as it is more central and has better transport links
We should sell Hillsborough for redevelopment

Therefore, under my plan, the newly formed team will be known as follows;

Name of team: Sheffield United
Kit: Red and White stripes
Home Ground Bramall Lane, Sheffield

Typical Sheffield. Even the jokes are old and have seen better days.
