Memries of Bolton

Although our first-ever meeting with Bolton was on 1st February, 1890 in the FA Cup, for our fourth consecutive opponents (Preston, Villa, Sunderland and now Bolton) our first league meeting came in the 1893 season. For the record, here is the final table for the 1893-94 season.

The bottom three clubs (in pink) were not automatically relegated to the second division. Instead they were ‘invited’ to play a test match against teams in the division below. Preston beat Notts County and were invited to remain in the top flight. But Darwen (now AFC Darwen and currently playing in the North West Counties League Premier Division) who lost their test match to Small Heath and Newton Heath (now Manchester United) who lost their test match v Liverpool were both were ‘invited’ to join the second division. Also noticeable is a now-defunct club called ‘The Wednesday’.

This was only the 6th year of the football league structure. Our recent fixtures versus The Trotters are:

Full List

Our most recent meeting was at the Macron Stadium on 12th September 2017 in The Championship where a goal by Carter-Vickers secured a 1-0 win for The Blades.

On 25th February 2017, The Blades were riding high in League One and closing in on promotion. Despite some pre-match trash-talk by ex-Wednesday player Gary Madine he was mysteriously left out of the Bolton team. The Blades won 2-0 with both goals scored by Billy Sharp (1 pen.)

Also worth a watch is a matchday vlog from an over-excitable Bolton fan.

On 6th August 2016 (our promotion season), the opening-day fixture – and Chris Wilder’s first league game in charge – saw Bolton win 0-1 at the Macron Stadium

4th December 2016 saw a meeting at Bramall Lane in Round 2 of the FA Cup. Despite goals from Coutts and O’Connell, Bolton won this game 2-3 in front of just 7,027. This was Bolton’s second triumph over the Blades in the 2016-17 season.

On 11th November 2006, the two sides met in the Premier League with the game ending in a 2-2 draw. United’s goals came from Rob Hulse and Colin Kazim-Richards in front of a crowd of 28,294. (Non-English commentary)

Bolton played at Burnden Park – about a mile from Bolton town centre since 1895. By 1992 the club's directors had decided that it would be difficult to convert Burnden Park into an all-seater stadium for a club of Bolton's ambition, as the Taylor Report required all first- and second-tier clubs to do. A decision was made to build an out of town stadium in the suburb of Horwich, with the eventual location chosen 5 miles due west of the town centre. The stadium opened in August 1997, as a modern, all-seater stadium with a capacity of around 29,000. In recognition of the club's former ground the stadium stands on "Burnden Way". It has four stands, though the lower tier seating is one continuous bowl. It was originally known as the Reebok Stadium after long-time team sponsor, Reebok. This was initially unpopular with many fans, as it was considered impersonal, and that too much emphasis was being placed on financial considerations. This opposition considerably lessened since the stadium was built. In April 2014, the stadium was renamed as part of a four-year deal with new sponsors Macron sportswear.

The old Burnden Park, although charismatic, was a shithole where home and away fans shared a large open terrace behind on of the goals and where being showered by coins, rocks, half-bricks etc. was routine.

Both Bolton the town and Bolton the team are throwbacks to a bygone age. Think Royston Vasey on a bad day.

My earliest recollection of games versus Bolton came on 14th January, 1978. In a League Division Two game at Bramall Lane, Bolton beat ‘Happy’ Harry Haslam’s Blades 1-5. Back then, both home and away fans ‘shared’ the all-standing lower tier of the Bramall Lane stand. When one of Bolton’s goals went in, a mass fight broke out (think the final scene in ‘Blazing Saddles’!) The fighting continued all the way back to Midland Station with a spectacular ‘ambush’ of the Bolton coaches on waste ground that would eventually become Ponds Forge.

A memorable FA Cup third round tie in 1963 was postponed many times due to a very severe winter. Here’s the programme:

As you’ll see, the cover was overprinted with ‘finally played Wednesday 20th February, 1963’, but then they added ‘Or so we thought until one hour beforehand’. And then…

‘AT LAST! Wed. 6th March…’ The original date was 5th January so a delay of over 2 months. The Blades finally won the tie 3-1.

Ones to watch:

The odious Gary Madine (see here leaving court – again) is Bolton’s top scorer with seven goals.

Next highest – with three goals – is Sammy Ameobi, currently on loan from Newcastle.

Mark Howard – the ex-Blades goalie – occasionally features and another ex-pig who plays for the Trotters is Mark Beevers.

Form Guide:

Based on the last six league games, Bolton are currently 16th and United are 19th. Full list.

14 Jan 1978...

one third of the Jim Brown Three Five's Trinity...
but almost worth it for the song
'oooh Bolton Wanderers, wanky, wanky, wank, wanky Wanderers.'

This year where it was an arse to get home because there was no trains (seems to be a recurring theme of this season)

I remember going to Burnden park in 95 for a midweek night game. Stood on the terrace behind the goal that had a white line painted up it, indicating the 'restricted view's section due to the supermarket.

Blake scored, but also missed a complete sitter. We then went on a crappy run which saw us drop out of the PO completely, having sat in there all season.

9 months later today we parted company with Basset and appointed Kendall...

We were poor against Bolton in the 1970s

March 1970 - Blades 0 Bolton 1. The third of our 4 consecutive defeats which cost us promotion. Roger Hunt was playing for Bolton. First time I saw a World Cup winner
October 1970 Blades 2 Bolton 2. Threw away our 2 goal lead in last 10 mins
January 1971 Bolton 2 Blades 1. Tudor's and Hodgkinson's last league match for us. Tudor opened scoring in the 1st minute. Bolton finished bottom that season
December 1976. Blades 2 Bolton 3. Frosty night and at half time ref was considering abandoning match. Peter Dornan came on as sub. Only time I saw him.
April 1977. Bolton 1 Blades 2. At last! Goals from Chico Hamilton pen and Keith Edwards derailed Bolton's promotion chances
August 1977. Bolton 2 Blades 1
January 1978 Blades 1 Bolton 5

Live on Sky. Kop gave Nathan Blake stick but he responded with a goal for Bolton. Gareth Taylor equalised rising like a salmon to head in a corner

Having lived in Bolton for 10 years, my 'memries' are mainly bad ones. A town completely without merit.

Fucking hell, now I feel old.

I went to Berlins straight after the match, then next door to Europa, all the team were in getting pissed, had a great night, players were very engaging and up for a laugh.

Shame you missed it Cal

Yeah I did ask if I could pop down and at least watch the match(maybe a couple after aswell)... But my mother was a bit funny about me being 5 days old and all that.... Women eh :D

I remember last season a bunch of Bolton pricks invading this forum, mouthing off a great deal then disappearing without a trace. :)

That CKR goal is one of my favourite goals seen live. We came back from 2 down if I remember correctly.

One of those teams I know we've played a fair amount but I don't remember much about the games. CKRs goal stands out. I know I've been to their ground twice and we lost but I don't remember anything else :) Not sure if that's a sign of old age or not!! Can't stand Madine, Le Fondre or Parkinson from the current lot. Always liked Jay-Jay Okocha.

December 31st 1983. Blades 5 Bolton 0 I was a ballboy on the Bramall Lane end & saw my hero Colin Morris bag a hat trick. Joe Bolton & King Keith scored as well. Felt 10 feet tall congratulating Colin in the tunnel afterwards.

I was there. One of those wonderful games where Morris and Edwards played brilliantly together.

Well it's 34 years almost to the day so let's hope for something similar.

As a 9 year old it was the game that got me hooked. Previous game had been Terry Curran’s first game in a pre season game vs Grimsby - safe to say it was in the balance after that experience, despite me learning a load of new words

Colin Morris still a favourite as a result of that game. Edwards paled into insignificance - jinky running, a perm and a tache every time.

Should have been 6-0 as Morris missed a penalty after their keeper messed about for an age before he was able to take it.
