I know a few of you enjoyed the nostalgia episodes we did on Bladespod, so I thought I’d drop this here and let you know about a new project I’ve teamed up with The Pinch on — the Memory Lane podcast.

Three times a month we pick a topic from United’s past and dive into it. That could be anything from season reviews and deep dives into individual games to the more niche stuff like shirt sponsors, forgotten cup competitions, or reviews of old Blades VHS releases.

The first episode is out now wherever you get your podcasts. I’m joined by Sam and Dave as we talk through our best and worst opening days of the season.

If you’ve got ideas for future episodes, memories you want us to cover, or even fancy coming on as a guest yourself, we’d genuinely love to hear from you. Any feedback is welcome — including pointing out everything we’ve inevitably got wrong.

Also, thanks to Bladepicker, who had this idea about 5 years ago that we've now shamelessly nicked

I'll use this thread to post each new episode going forward

IN!!!

Possible future topics:
  • Ownership Struggles (Brearly, Sam Hashimi, Mike McDonald, etc etc)
  • Playing in a three sided ground
  • The enigma that was Glyn Hodges
  • The Death Days of long term managers (Basset, Warnock, Wilder 1, Wilder 2)
  • Best and Worst Boxing Days
  • Great comebacks (WHU 1994, Birmingham 4-4 1997(?), Forest 2003 etc etc)
  • How did we not win that (Wolves 1996/7?, Them lot 2011 etc)
  • High scoring mental games (Southampton 3-3 1993/94, Man U 2019, Cardiff 5-3, Birmingham 4-4, Burnley 5-2)
  • Worst challenges seen - i.e. one where you knew the red card was coming out, or maybe it didnt

We've got most of these on the list but some great shouts. Worst challenges sounds fun

Inspired by a recent listen to the bladespod on our 06/07 campaign, how about some alternate history?
  • What if we had stayed up on the final day in 06/07
  • What if Seaman never made that save at Old Trafford in 2003
  • What if we didn't bottle promotion to the Championship in 2012 and got back up first time
  • How would the rest of 19/20 have played out if Covid had not happened
I mean it's all speculative bollocks but interesting to hear nonetheless.

Best and worst first min goal and best worst last min goal

In honour of Roy view the best and worst view for seeing/not seeing a historic moment

I wrote an article for The Pinch about if Danny Webber's shot had gone in against Wigan. Think we ended up simply going down the next season.

Excellent. I like all The Pinch podcasts, but only wish there were more of them. This will be a great addition.

I’m struggling to add much to the great suggestions already made. Maybe one on cup runs, or if that’s too broad, Nigel Clough’s United in the cup.

Something about how The Lane has changed might be good: the old Kop, the old John Street, different music played over the years (‘when the kids…are united’ suddenly comes to mind), the rise and fall of goal music, bad food, worse food, the old scoreboard with the little man that jumped around when we scored, kids passed to the front, jumpers for goal-posts. Marvellous.

The ‘Triple Assault’ season perhaps, although I’m not sure if you did that on BladesPod? To be honest, picking any season and working through it would be interesting and bring back a lot of memories. They were always some of my favourite BladesPod episodes when you did that. Even if the season in question was unremarkable, there are always certain moments and memories which stand out.

We did do the Triple Assault one on Bladespod though I genuinely can't remember anything about the recording. We've already recorded one about the Clough era which should be out soon

What if Brownie had scored that penalty in the PO final vs Wolves (I still think we would have made a come back had it gone in)

Great stuff, will listen.

POD idea - 'The Churn : Warnock to Wilder' ; Adams, Bruce, Speed, Wilson, Weir, Clough, Adkins. Mental period.

Memories of the most recent match played

Memories of the end of a transfer window

Memories of the season just gone and tallying up the chip butty predictions

Memories of last season, compared to the upcoming season, and predictions for the forthcoming season.

Memories of any board room or managerial changes.

Yes, you know what I’m talking about 😢
