Media's View On The Depature Of Clough

For what it is worth I do think the board was going to give Clough another season at it but something has happened in the review meeting to change their minds. If Clough answered legitimate questions from the board as to why we failed and how he was going to put it right in the same manner as he spoke to the radio pig reporter after the Swindon game then he made up their minds for them. In that interview he came across as an arrogant prick who just would never accept he had got it wrong and as someone who was not bothered either way whether he remained as manager or not. No one is man is bigger than Sheffield United and Clough may now have a long time to reflect on the situation he clearly misjudged.

The analogy for the journalists to understand here is Manchester United.

Last season, they had David Moyes lead them to, for the Red Devils, a disgraceful first half of the season. Weir may not have lasted as long but similar circumstances.

When Van Gaal takes over this season, what would they have said if he had led them to 5th but won the FA Cup?

That's right, they'd have been speculating about him getting the sack. Why? Because Manchester United should do a hell of a lot better.

League 1 may not be the Premier League and we may not be the stature of Manchester United. What we are though is the equivalent of Manchester United in League 1. They expect Champions League in the way we expect promotion.

Throw in the media circus around Arsene Wenger's achievements of late (FA Cup winners but speculating he'll be sacked last summer) and those comments are a little hypocritical.

I think he talked himself out of another season in charge.

The ticket promo vid suggested to me he was here for another season and I think they expected him to have a amicable meeting about plans for new players but it seems like that meeting went wrong. Hopefully that the truth will come out and the media can stop sucking up to Clough as if the season has been perfect and he has been hard done by.

Just started listening to FH. They cite stats that it was ~56.67%* - by far the best since Warnock. Archie Clarke in the 50s is the most recent one with a better ratio (which is a bit confusing given what they say about Warnock)

9th manager in 8 years. :(

*Which you can round up to 60% if you want to be generous.
But in which division?

And for The equivalent of ManU in L1 we lost to Gillingham, Crewe, Yeovil, chezzy, Port Vale, Fleetwood et al

I would say it's 7 managers not 9. I don't think it's fair to include Carver and Morgan in the stats. They were caretakers, not permanent appointments.

Exactly. The journalists are simply seeing the cup runs and - good as they were - not looking at the league as a whole. They assume we did well because we made the PO. When in actual fact, we comfortably limped home because everybody else was so shite and we could afford those losses.

When was the last time we won a match was it the Donny game last month? If Rochdale had pulled their finger out they would have got into the playoffs I reckon.

The one we're in. ;)

Tbf I have argued in other threads that football is not really a statistical game for this reason (ie whatever stat you drag up there's usually a bigger picture), so to some extent I agree - but, regardless, it's some kind of evidence a) against the Negative label and b) for retaining him.

What the fuck to these knobends know about Sheffield United ? The national press never attend games outside of the premiership and just re-hash reports from local rags, was listening to The Sun sports reporter on radio pig and thinking when has anyone ever seen a report in the Sun on a United game since we dropped out of the Premiership ? I'd sooner make my own mind up on what I witness every other week or trust Deadbat to report what he has seen while actually at the away games. Screw what the media think tomorrows chip paper or cheap bog roll, The fans who attend regular are the ones to ask how dire the last season has been not some hack looking for a quick story, most will tell you it has been shite apart from a few on this forum who would put a positive spin on us changing our shirts to blue and white stripes.

He had a 23% win rate over the latter part of the season when it counted, going to be easy to improve on that once we've cleared some terrible signings and put a basic team structure in place. 28 points off Bristol and 21 off relegation

Sorry but your talking gash here. Its just as important to win at the start as it is at the end of a season. Make your stats fit your agenda by all means but at least make some real sense. You could argue we already knew top 2 was out of reach but play offs assured so we eased off. His win ratio was good enough in itself. What next 2 cup semi finals dont really count? Only goals at the Kopp end count?

The last part of your statement is the reason Clough got the bullet in my opinion.

So to sum up anyone who disagrees with you doesn't know what they are on about?

Ever cross your mind they might have a more objective view on it than you or I?

That's precisely the position adopted by the SAD. Indeed, one of them, Misery by name, said exactly that in a recent post.

2 cup.semi finals dont count
not to me anyway , been to three and wished id not bothered and i wish people would stop bigging them up

I would hapily swap promotion and never getting past the 3rd round again if it meant just having one matchwinner in the team
just one player i would pay money to watch

Im sorry but the cups were a massive distraction for our flaky sub standard mentally weak lower league squad fillers and just showed them up for what they really are

I agree Metal. I care little what Pat Murphy or Robbie Savage think about anything, and even less what they say about Sheffield United.

I pay far more attention to the two thirds of fans on this forum and BM who said Clough should stay.

You didn't get much of a break Roy. Well done, and I guess you'll have to do the new manager one. No rest for the wicked.

But these are not the fans that sit near me in the centre of the kop, not many around me have had a good word to say for the bloke for weeks, last season started so full of optimism but as the season went on we could all see we would never get near the top two, and then we could see we would struggle in the play offs. Walking back to the car after games hardly anyone had a good word for Clough, despite the silly polls on here or BM I genuinely believe at least 50% wanted rid of Clough and his boring style of football. Would I have renewed my ST if it was not for the fact I now qualify as a senior ? .................. not a bleedin chance, despite a great offer from the club ST sales are down on last season and will be a big factor.

That sounds quite likely.

To say "no man is bigger than Sheffield United" sounds good but I'm not sure what it means. Clough was brought in to be his own man and be totally in charge of the playing side. He does seem to have quite an abrasive personality, but I think we need a strong-minded manager to get us out of this division.

It could have been the board's attempt to interfere in the playing side that ultimately led to his dismissal. I wouldn't be surprised if he refused to commit to more attacking formations, or maybe even refused to have Baxter back. Who knows, it could be anything. But I'm guessing that Clough simply said "I'm doing it this way - back me or sack me".

Am I correct in thinking that Archie Clarke was the chief scout who brought many first teamer to the club?

Yes, he was our caretaker manager between Joe Mercer's departure (just after Xmas 1958) to the appointment of John Harris (April 1959). We drew at Arsenal and beat them in the replay of the FA Cup but in the 6th round we lost to Norwich after a replay

Problem is any incoming possible manager will most likely see the press and just steer clear.

people need to work. Southampton didn't scare anybody off by always trying something new till it worked. Never be scared of transformation.
