Assuming we can't off load either we need 2 new first choice Centre backs with Mcg and Tanganga as back ups. At a push you can get away with playing one of them but both of them together will not work. Neither are dominant enough or capable of bring the ball out of defence which is a major factor why our play is so pedestrian.

What a horrific defender he is by the way

Somehow got some plaudits against Hull because he for once did something he should've done, then got Lundstram sent off. Reverted to type tonight.

One of the worst I've seen at this club.

How he's been playing him over Bindon I'll never get. Because neither will be here next season, so it's not like we're planning for that. And if this clown is, then something has gone dreadfully dreadfully wrong. He's not even good enough as fourth choice.
Betis and Jamie offered him Tanganga Matsos Chong long contracts on lots of money and we gave their old clubs a load of dosh

Im sorry, but why are we all so quick to jump on McGuinness, when in reality it should be Tanganga..
We paid £3m for Mcguinness, and 3x that for Tanganga. He's meant to be our captain. How is he getting bullied in the air by Blackburn's striker yesterday for his second goal....
McGuinness is limited, but at least he'll always give 100%.. Tanganga looks the most disinterested player ever.

He’s got a cracking agent, who sanctioned a four year contract??
He’ll be the main man next season nobody else will take him off our hands

If him and Tanganga are our central defenders on a consistent basis next season we’ll finish no higher than 10th, unless we find a player who can create and score enough goals to out score the errors made by them.

As an ex defender, I'm suprised that Wilder isn't looking at a complete defensive rebuild as top priority. It's not that we concede goals, more that the goals we do concede are gifted to the opposition. Midfield doesn't help by disappearing when the opposition has the ball but the defence as a whole is fucking pitiful. Tanganga is shockingly bad, he makes some great last ditch blocks but that's because he's trying to recover from being out of position, can't read the game and he certainly isn't a leader of men so shouldn't have the captaincy. McGuinnes is no better or worse than Tanganga. Wins a few headers, isn't very good and should be playing at a lower level. Bindon, still a work in progress is better than both of them but he's not our player so no point banging his drum.

Worst of the lot is Burrows, he has no defensive attributes at all. As soon as we lose the ball, anywhere on the pitch he switches off. He doesn't run back, he doesn't know where he should be and he gets skipped past like he's a statue of by some fluke he is in the vicinity of his man. He's a defensive Nick Montgomery but without the running about. I'm glad he's weighed in with a couple of goals but he's cost us far more than he's scored.

UTBFTP 👊👊👊

All I know is that wilder has got a huge task sorting this dog shit defence out..cos if we concede with regularity next year we,re going nowhere.

Agreed. McGuinness was an absolute statue all night. Don’t want to him anywhere near the first team again but some div gave him a massive wage and another div picks him over Bindon.

Wilder’s plan with McGuinness and Rothwell has obviously been to play them into form and fitness. The problem is that they need to go and play in League 1 to look half decent, no amount of playing them into form will work in the Championship.

McGuinness doesn’t have the attributes to be anything other than a very limited and occasional squad player. Rothwell makes me, at 41 and with various ailments, look like a mobile footballer.

And yet he wasnt the worst player last night ,not even the worst centre back.

Tbf, it's a thread specifically about him. Tanganga has taken as much grief elsewhere

The worst thing about this signing is that it was universally known that he was an absolute dud of a signing for Luton, yet we decided to spend good money on him anyway.

You could maybe accept it if he's impressed at this level last season and it just hasn't worked out for us, or even if it was a bit of a gamble on a youngster or someone from abroad. But this was as close as you can get to a signing that was guaranteed to not be up to the standard.

It's like we didn't do any real research in to the player at all. Normally that would seem like a daft suggestion, but when you look at the other signings from that window, you genuinely have to wonder.

The person or people responsible for those mad last 7/8 days of the window needs outing pure footballing and business negligence

Well Wednesday rated him highly, so it checks out....

Easily pleased them lot, see Marvin Johnon and Maximus Lowe.

Bindon's gone at the end of the season. I think he'll be a quality player but for me it's like when we had Ampadu - it'll be another season or two until he's good enough for what we needed.

Given that, I don't think it's crazy for Wilder to chuck McGuinness into some games that don't matter and see if he can get anything out of him. Problem is, all that's happened is we've seen he can't.
And so have any potential buyers. Hes league one and league one clubs dont spend much money on transfers. Its mind boggling to think of the wages going out to players who wont be first choice next season.

Who weren't first choice this season, as well.

Dont think they missed him and their fans not fussed either but I'd take anyone that will offer close to what we paid.
No club in world football is going to offer us anything more than £2-3m for Tanganga because that's about what he's worth. It's not his fault that we paid 3x that but from a financial perspective we'd need to get £5m this summer to avoid a P&L (and therefore PSR) cost.
That summer window will kill us for years to come. No more Luton dross, Ogbene is nowhere near as bad as him or Chong, but hardly been used since we signed him.
Ogbene is clearly not physically ready for a season of Championship football. Funny that, after an Achilles rupture. And yet there's people on here getting misty eyed about us resigning Harry Souttar who's even further behind in his rehab than Ogbene was.

The decision of Jamie Hoyland to open up that old email from Wilder entitled "Summer Transfer Targets" then proceed to sign McGuinness, Chong(y) and Tanganga for a combined £15m is going to ruin us until 2030.

Binden has been injured

Don't want to break it to you but we paid £8m for McGuinness, and £3m for Chong, to twice relegated Luton, they must be pissing themselves still to this day

We didn't.

£4m for McGuinness (roughly in line with his book value at Luton, who were desperate to get him off the wage bill after relegation) and £2.5m for Chong. Still too much for either of them but way better than the numbers you've made up got there.
