- Unless there's a defender out of shot, VAR would have ruled it out for offside
- 9 Brentford players v 5 Blades. To win 2 headers against those odds is impressive, but very poor defensively.
- McGoldrick displays extreme mental sharpness, in this shot he's already on the move towards the trajectory of the ball and within a split second has manoevered himself into position for a free header. Clever player and up there with our best bargains in living memory.

VAR if it continues to be used in the way it is it will kill football.

Technology should be used to determine if the ball has crossed the line, If the foul has been committed inside the box or not for a penalty (only after the ref has given a foul) and to overturn a penalty awarded when it’s been a clear dive.

It shouldn’t be used to determine off side or adjudicate in hand balls and to give penalties or fouls retrospectively once the ref hasn’t awarded one.

It should only be used to determine offside if:

a. Sheffield Wednesday need a goal to save them from impending relegation, and the lino has missed Fletcher being offside and confirms the goal didn't stand, thereby starting a dismal slide into ignominy and decay

b. Sheffield Wednesday have a goal scored against them which is claimed as offside but on VAR review shows the final Wednesday defender playing the scorer onside, thereby starting a dismal slide into ignominy and decay

That.

I agree, as it stands VAR is killing the game as a spectacle. Can you really celebrate a goal wildly if you know there's a very good chance it's going to need verification before being awarded? My only hope is that it's the precursor to something more instananeous. A bit of a wild prediction but I don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility that linesmen will be replaced, or at least supplemented by some form of camera operating down the touchline making instant calls on offsides, in the next 10 years. If that can happen and make instant and accurate offside calls then I'm all for it, but the current state of play is unsatisfactory.

You've said VAR's going to kill football, and that it shouldn't be used for offsides/handball.

Why?

Disagree should be used for issues of fact. Hand to ball, offside, over the line, studs showing or diving.

Why?

Because otherwise what’s the point of having a Ref. The Man U / PSG game is why it’s wrong to be used in this way. The original decision to award the corner should have stood.

Because Refs make mistakes, and don't always have the best view.

The Man Utd game is an issue of the way handballs are interpreted: the problem isn't VAR.

If it was a handball (debatable) then it should be awarded as a penalty, if the Ref doesn't spot it, then VAR spotting it is better than the injustice going unnoticed and the penalty not being given.

What I do find increasingly annoying is that 'assistant referees' are discouraged from putting their flag up for close offsides now until the ball is dead. That way if there's a goal, VAR decides.

Two issues here:

a) You're going to get loads of goals reviewed for VAR, thus killing celebrations.
b) In days where health and safety seem paramount, what if the lino knows it's offside, but keeps flag down....player gets totally crunched thus breaking a leg. The officials have unnecessary let play continue and in turn increased the potential for prevailing injuries which could be avoided.

It's a stupid rule.

It might bring about some interesting after goal celebrations.

Ball hits back of net, entire team forms an orderly line waiting for the result. Goal given they all perform the hokey cokey.
Goal disallowed they all walk away slowly shaking their heads and pretending to wipe away tears.

VAR is just taking one more variable out of football, and part of the increasing sanitisation of the game. The TV pundits have demanded that the referees get defenestrated and that is effectively what will happen. The fact we are already seeing massive issues with it here already - and have been for some time abroad - is neither here nor there.

Pitch = everybody has the same.
Weather = Increasingly not an issue (see above).
Did the ball cross the line = Not an issue anymore.
Offside = Not an issue anymore.
Bully the referee and officials from the stands = Not an issue anymore.
Momentum = Killed by VAR.
Shit ref = Not going to be an issue.

Thank God they're organising our chaos. What would this phenomenally successful sport have done without them?

I don't see where McGoldrick is offside TBH
He has a Brentford player stood next to him when the header is won
Maybe his right calf is offside, but the rest of his body looks onside
The ruling states any part of the body which can play the ball. His foot is beyond the last defender so VAR would have ruled it out.

I think the rule is, that if any part of your body, with which you can legally score a goal is in an offside position, then you are offside.

Difficult to Police accurately with the human eye but VAR is a different matter

Yes, he could have been given offside even though most of his body was onside, but aren't forwards supposed to be given the benefit of doubt.

It's all semantics really, a players body shape when running through can mean his head is offside but the rest of his body is onside. It's impossible for a ref or VAR to come to the same consistent decision because when VAR has done it's business a human being still has to make the final decision

Some refs will then give offside against a forwards big toe and some won't

VAR is just a massive killjoy in my opinion. We're trading enjoyment for accuracy and even then it doesn't work because the rules are written for referees' eyes operating in real time.

Or it will lead to far far more moments of entertainement.

For every time a decision is made one team will celebrate one team won’t.

Plus they’ll be longer added time which will lead to far more dramatic finishes.

VAR will work it will just be shit to start with

You're right, but in that frame he was already on the move away from the goal (and the defender), so two or three frames later he's onside and a VAR ruling of offside would be extremely harsh. Isn't there also a convention of benefit of doubt to the attacker?

I do find that aspect of the offside rule really frustrating, when linesmen flag for offside when the player is back onside before he gets the ball.

Great for the TV spectator / neutral, shit for those at the match who are emotionally involved.

I think it's the one thing that currently has the potential to put me off attending football matches. If you don't get that explosion of joy at a goal, what's the point?

The explosion of joy when a goal against us is disallowed?

If the decision is marginal then the decision should rest with the refs original one irrespctive of what the slow motion or freeze frame says, i.e. same as cricket. I don't think anyone would have a problem with VAR in this instance and it would also put the onus back onto the match officials instead of them bottling it and relying on VAR to make a decision for them.

What that still picture doesn't show is their defender holding onto Disdy and not looking at the ball - penalty before offside so the advantage played and the goal stands.

The offside rule is the bigger problem than VAR at the moment, albeit the two problems are linked.

The offside rule have become so convoluted and open to interpretation that even referees can’t seem to agree on the correct application of the rule.

The example showing McGoldrick being offside is a good example. He’s technically a toe offside, but that shouldn’t be enough to call him offside. He’s not offside because of a clever trap played by the opposition team. He’s bang in line with the defender.

We need to go back to the daylight rule IMO. It’s the best way to clear it up.

If VAR was used, Mo Salah would still have been awarded a penalty.

So people can stop at home and get that 'Strictly', 'The Voice' experience?

The defender can legally play the ball with his arse. His arse is playing Didsy onside.

Don't let the Football League know, they will relegate us!
