Now who is the wrong un ?

Is McCabe sellin players from under Blackwell's feet and restricting new quality signings or is it Blackwell thats inept ? or is it both ?

One thing for sure our team now is light years away from the promotion team.

We sold Bromby, tried to replace him with Shittu (but he won't step down a level) and got caught out with Kilgallon's illness.

We should have planned ahead and it makes me cross that, as a professional organisation, we apparently didn't.

However, your "is it balck or is it white?" question appears to be typical of someone with an agenda to stir up trouble for one or the other persons mentioned.

Let's hope we learn from our mistake rather than conduct a witch-hunt at this stage of the season

McCabe & Blackwell or Ridsdale & O'Leary ?

No brainer, be thankful that we have sensible management with long term priorities

McCabe & Blackwell or Ridsdale & O'Leary ?

Putting aside for one moment whether criticism of the manager and chairman is justified, why is it that whenever someone criticises the lack of investment in the playing side or sale of our best players someone always offers up Leeds or a similar crisis hit club as an alternative, as if to say if we didn't behave as we are doing financial ruin would be the inevitable result?

I think its because sum Blades think you shudn't criticise no matter what.
We all know sumats up at BDTBL the waste of money and bad management is in my opinion unbelievable !

Bad management - Robson/Blackwell.

Waste of money includes players like Beattie (well overpaid there), Hendrie ( as wasn't used), Carney (see Hendrie) etc etc

The big mistake was appointing Robson as manager and given him oodles of money. Had we appointed someone with half an ounce of competence (or maybe even kept Warnock). given the money McCabe was prepared to throw at the club in 07-08, we may well have gone striaght back up.

3rd place and a playoff final bad management?

Unfortunatley some of the players brought in like you say Carney & Hendrie have been a waste of money.
Beattie I disagree with because he scored lots of goals that otherwise we may or maynot have been score by others and without those goals we would have been in a lot worse position than 3rd in the league

And there is a decent argument that in 2007-8 but for Beattie's goals United might have spent some time in the relegation zone prior to Robson being fired - which might have changed many things for the worse.

Depends if you just go on a results based management scenario....

I'm saying Beatties wages were too high, not that he was a waste. Reportedly on 35k a week could easily pay for another 6 players at a decent whack.

Also - according to some we only finished 3rd because Beattie left...

Name them. Also, why do people throw up Leeds and the rest? Namely because when they all fly too close to the sun or the expectation rises beyond what is reasonable (like us, now) thats where clubs generally end up.

Leeds
Pigs
Charlton
Portsmouth (currently)
West Ham
Cardiff (in and out)
Derby
Forest
Barnsley

All the above have got into financial difficulties in the main trying to manage fans ridiculous expectations. We used to have our feet on the ground and it was the pigs who had their heads in the clouds. Possibly the other way around these days.

Mistakes on the PR side have most certainly been made (Brian Howard,Leroy Lita) but in the main we are a very well run club. Might be why people like Howard Wilkinson (who can't stand us by the way) say that we are the template of a well run club. We are, but we take it for granted.

Why are we expecting too much I hear you say. Because in the current financial crisis both in business and elsewhere, every club outside of perhaps 5 are selling clubs. We are expecting to get promoted by the sounds of many, whereas a top 6 finish is surely the reasonable expectation. We are expecting Premier League Football next season. Why? Newcastle, Boro, West Brom are streets ahead of the rest and the best we can expect is to hang in there and hope that 2 or 3 of them implode.

I believe we now have put the excessive wages of players like Carney and Hendrie (Beattie was worth every penny of what he earned) who didn't fit into the team. If we start selling in January however, I will have been proved wrong. I feel the nucleus of a good squad is there, we need 2 maybe 3 loan players to top that up or perhaps make a signing or two in January. Footballs bubble will burst. Its a stupid idiot who predicts just when that will happen though. McCabe is not that stupid idiot and he is water proofing us for the storm.

I reckon thats about right. In 2006, the average championship salary was less than £4K a week - see http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/4898392.stm.

I would reckon its around £5K ish now.

Agree, now where would we get the decent players we need because if the average ones are on £5k and our own loaned to Doncaster superstar pulls £10k per week, I am guessing that the good ones cost upwards of 10k per player. And the really good ones (Beattie) cost more than double that.

We have a squad full of £6k players but apparently they aren't good enough. Where should we go for the pandoras box of top players for zippo pounds?

Totally agree Darren.Robson set us back and with the money given to him we would have done much better with another manager.
I do not doubt that he could spot a good player but man management and motivation were just not his forte.

However I still think we made a grave error in releasing Bromby without a replacement being available.
To rely only on two reconised centre backs is crazy and has already probably cost us 3 points, which we might need at the end of the season.
