One of the best players I played with always used to give the man he was marking a little pinch early on, usually the back of the upper arm or by treading on a toe. I asked him why and he said “ I just want to see what reaction there is. That will tell me if I can get him sent off or at least spending the game trying to do me rather than being useful.”
At elite level, things like this go on all the time.

It's all well and good sticking up for his mate, but the Ref or other Refs could viewed that slightly differently and sent him off.
A Three game ban is not what we need right now by any of our players we have enough problems with injuries and the financial problems we don't need suspensions on top with only 18 games left.

Agreed, but generally this season he has been much more controlled.
In a tense match with someone pushing you around it is not easy to keep calm. We can sit and watch and criticise, but I guess few of us have played sport for a living, with all the pressures that brings.

We might have played with the same lad He'd take a couple of minutes to figure out who was their most dangerous player, find the opportunity off the ball to nip or kick him, and see what the reaction was. 9 times out of 10, more, their star man was reduced to running round the pitch trying to kick the shit out of our angelic-looking central midfielder, much to the bemusement of the opposition. Absolute fucking genius.
