Mcburnie better midfield?

I'm always up for a reasoned argument and wouldn't wish to put down anyone's opinion but genuinely, I've never, ever, ever seen a player less suited to playing in midfield and I include Michael Verrips.

People just completely blank this and just see the little 5 yard passes he does make. One that stuck in my mind was just prior to him setting up MGW, he put them on the attack and nearly through on goal at the other end, ball came to him that wasn’t an easy grass cutter that he can collect, was around knee height or something, no one challenging him and he passed it first time straight to their player which nearly got them through on goal. He does this time and time again but it is completely blanked
Very fair point you've made there I may be guilty of over emphasing the few things he does manage to pull off and as you say blanking the calamity passes

He's good at diving (falling over) and moaning, maybe competition for Wes in goal?

Some people see what they wanna see !! & find it appropriate to neglect owt else a player brings

25 years ago, it would be much more common for a player to change position based on certain attributes, i.e height, tackling etc... even as a temporary measure. I remember another non-scoring centre forward Billy Whitehurst, would often drop into centre half when needed. You could see the potential in McBurnie as a centre half in a 3 or midfield player ( still not sure about him technically in possession, although he certainly has the ability to pick a through ball ). But it seems these days given that the game is so tactical, I get the sense that coaches are less willing to try this. I think sometimes this can get a bit ridiculous, think of the conversations around Basham, Brewster, McGoldrick or Callum Robinson, it feels like people think they can only play in one formation in the entire world of football or operative in a very precise 10sqm of the pitch. But more generally I do think there is smg in this. I think if it is not part of his coaching from an early stage in their career, it is a big commitment by the player and coaching team to change and could risk decreasing his value ( ...I know, everyone will say what value....just take the point in principle :-) ) in the final year of his contract. But certainly at least for McBurnie, he is not going to spend his entire career in our current system and he is going to have to be able to play as an lone centre forward and any of the central or wide positions behind a centre forward.

I remember Kenny Burns was a centre forward at Birmingham City joined Brian Clough’s Notts Forest and became a CB. Won the First Division title and 2 European Cups, 2 League Cups and 2 FWA Player of the Year awards. More here

McBurnie aint no Kenny Burns. Kenny Burns was 10x the player McB is. But I never knew that- good info Greystones.

I really hope you don't believe that's him in that video Dronnie.
A muppet I know was convinced it was him 😆 The name of the actual perpetrator is in the bottom right corner of the video.
Does look like Oli if you squint I suppose.

Players off the top of my head have successfully changed position for us

Basham

Coutts - sure he was brought in as a winger.

Brown - played left wing for a while before being moved inside (although think he was a cm for Man City)

Jagielka - RB to CM to CB

Tonge - CM to left wing

Monty - wing to CM (only played a handful of games on the wing though if memory serves).

Something iv been wondering for a while would Mcburnie be better suited to play in midfield. His hold up play and eye for a pass even if it looks like a fluke mid slip is quite good. His attributes defensively are decent and we all know he's struggled to produce any end product (not a dig) if he was delivering the service to the front rather than being the man at the front how would you see him doing?
No

I believe there's a vacancy for somebody wandering around The Kop shouting 'Programmes three quid'. And if Captain Blade throws a sickie on a match day, he's a shoo in to don the costume. May be able to control the ball better while wearing it actually.....
