Wednesday faced the possibility of going down IF they lost at home to Forest AND Luton won at Derby. At half-time at Leicester it was announced that Wednesday were 1-0 down at home to Forest. There were no mobile phones in those days. At full-time we were celebrating our promotion but then all went quiet as the announcer went through the division one scores. He announced "Derby 2 Luton 3" to a large cheer, continued going through the results in alphabetical order until he got to "Sheffield Wednesday 0...". We didn't hear Forest's score (3),as there was absolute pandemonium. After playing second diddle in Sheffield since the Boxing Day Massacre, we were top dogs again. United fans were wearing T-shirts saying "The Blades are going up" on the front and "Wednesday here we come" on the back. One bloke with me has covered the latter up with 'CANCELLED'. In his autobiography, Dave Bassett appeared annoyed that a section of our fans had appeared pleased with Wednesday's relegation. The section being around 95% if I recall correctly.

As we sang for much of the 90 minutes at Leicester "he's fat, he's round, he's taking Wednesday down, Atkinson, Atkinson", and as soon as the announcement went up "he's fat, he's round, he's took the Wednesday down, Atkinson, Atkinson".

Still my favourite ever game and hard to think how it could ever be beaten. We were unstoppable with our powerful attacking play. Our support and the atmosphere were incredible. And to then hear that SWFIUA was simply brilliant.

I’ve heard pigs say that just before the final whistle there were rumours that Derby had equalised and they were safe. I’ve also been told that when they realised it was bollocks and they were down, quite a lot started ruaring.

The only really annoying thing about the day was getting there really early by train, but instead of being allowed to go into town, we were escorted to the ground by police so were there hours before the game. So much for a few drinks and a bite to eat.
Then after, again escorted by police to the station and put on a train to Sheffield. No matter that we weren't intending to go to Sheffield! Still we enjoyed the journey

Yes, I looked him up after watching the video and I couldn't believe that someone who played in that match had been dead for 19 years. Very sad indeed.

That Wednesday match was the first time I can remember the now obligatory "small boy crying over relegation". I used to rewind it back for a giggle. I think nowadays, people just do it to be on Tv half the time - like Brazilian women with nice norks during the world cup.
