Gone Elsewhere Martin Waghorn

People involved at the club in any capacity don’t have to be ‘true blades’ in order to show care and commitment.

In the current group I see some players falling short on ability but I don’t see anyone who gives off the impression they don’t care or are not committed to the cause.

I’m convinced if any of the staff or players didn’t care about the club then Wilder would sniff them out and get shot of them straight away.

I’m obviously a bit down trodden after Saturday... but I’m sure I’ve been misunderstood... I think Wilder would bleed for this club let me make that clear... but all I see in today’s game is money, the Waghorn carry on just highlighted that to me... I was unbelievably optimistic before 5pm (by the way we looked class for the first 5mins) and I still think we can do something this year... but it’s hard to find anyone who gives a damn anymore... but in Billy we already have one... get him up front and stick the captains armband on him!

I think our players are extremely committed to doing well for us, but something has disappeared from our care free style.
Last season we didn't care who it was we were playing, we just went into each game trying to put our opponents on the back foot and not take our boot of their throat until they were finished

Then something happened (I know Coutts injury was tragic)
But it was more than that, Coutts could have been replaced, it's not like he's the irreplaceable Messi

Something happened that caused our players to start thinking more cautiously and we've not been able to get back to what we were doing successfully since.

Two teams on a pitch!

This 3 at the back with the wide pair adding extra in wide areas was new and different. Teams hadn't encountered this before, together with other little tactical changes and new ideas. However, other coaches, managers are watching, analysing and evaluating. Finding ways to nullify this and exploit the weaknesses in the system. They did, we weren't as effective, we tried to modify to counter this but that made us appear more cautious. Players go in and out of form, get injured and move on. Dealing with all these things makes or breaks the success of a manager.

Just one caveat to that; having better players makes it easier.

Derby !
CW on Sky saying we couldnt compete with the wages or the fee !

So where do we look now for a striker as its clear that what we have isnt good enough
to last the season.? Is there a bid for a another striker that was mentioned recently ?
Really happy with that! Think we’ve dodged a bullet there if I’m honest

My guess is that we won't have a Waghorn or an O'Connell by Friday morning.

Fee for Waghorn agreed, wages not.

Waghorn, I'm not too bothered about - uninspiring signing IMO. I'd rather play a hungry Billy. O'Connell on the other hand is integral to everything we're trying to build here.

I totally agree but I reckon BHA will come in with 10 at the death, McC won't be able to say "NO"

Well I'm assuming you try to negotiate a fee whilst trying to ascertain as to what the player may require in wages. If you can't afford either of these then you swiftly move on to more attainable targets, especially with there being a transfer window which everyone knows closes earlier this year. What's your take on it??
Mine for what its worth is this: The asking price and salary demands changes like shifting sands, probably several times a day in some cases. Clubs know how to play the game, ours seem pretty good at it the last couple of years. Things don't always come off.
I work in contracting, you take day trippers to the seaside. Ergo, we know fuck all and are guessing.

Not really - his personal terms will change once they knew 3 people were interested and bidding. Then it’s a game of seeing whole go highest for him and his agent.

If boro/derby were sniffing around but never bid I’m sure we’d have been able to get him in here - we would have offered him a large wage increase from Ipswich I’m sure.

‘Couldn’t agree terms’ I read as wouldn’t match that offered by derby

Exactly. He is getting to the point where he wants a last decent payday contract, so you can't blame the lad for asking for silly money if he thinks he can get it (which he probably will do as Derby pay silly money in wages).

I've no doubt he would have been more than happy to sign for us until daft Derby came in and offered him silly money. More fool them as I cant see them doing anything this season and they will then be in the shit when they have sacked fat Frank.

For us, I liked Waghorn but it's not like he's the only fish in the sea. I didn't want Utd to sign him when I realised he wanted silly money. Glad he's finally made a decision and given us time to reassess and look elsewhere. Well done CW for nor bowing down to his silly demands.

My view is that we should be willing to go a bit above but not way above what the current highest earner is on.

The players should understand the reality that we'd have to pay bigger wages to get good players to the club - players who can help the current players achieve their aims. It's a choice between that or more of the same.

Then you have to ask the question about whether the players deserve such loyalty from the manager in ensuring wage parity, when in reality they'd all be off in a shot as soon as a better offer came along.

Increasing the wage ceiling is also a long term inevitability so if new signings were seen to be on more money, the current players should know that there's scope for their own contracts to improve in the future, as long as they perform.

Finally, wage parity is assumed to be key in maintaining team spirit. Well, I'm not sure I see too much of that right now.
But by going just a “bit above”, the other interested clubs go, just a bit above, that’s where the shithouse agent steps in and let’s all and sundry know the finer details.

I was never really happy about us signing a player who if I'm honest I used to laugh at when he was at rangers
Now I didn't see him last season (although I heard good things) but he must have Improved immeasurably in a short space of time to be worth twenty times what he was then

I think he would have been an Improvement for us but I'm not sure he will strengthen derbys strike force much

Be interesting to see how he does

It’s indicative of where united are, £5m for f***ing Waghorn, and we missed out because of personal terms. God help us. Wilder/rabbits, hats.

Instead of wasting our time with Waghorn, we could have gone after Armstrong and Bradshaw and had money to spare to loan in a LWB.

We could but maybe Wilder thinks they’re shit and doesn’t want to sign two players who aren’t good enough on three year contracts. In any event, you’re allowed to talk to more than one player.

Well for CW, if not this year, or before the end of his contract, does he say, enough is enough. No investment forthcoming, the likes of Derby, forest, Middlesbrough et al have. At what point in the next (insert amount of years ) does he say, thanks Kevin, but no thanks. Or his he, us, or KM happy too move up a few places each year.* SIGH*
I just want us to win something relevant before I snuff it.

I totally agree but I reckon BHA will come in with 10 at the death, McC won't be able to say "NO"
Why not 10 now? There’s more chance of us accepting it if we had a couple of days to spend some of it. A club makes a late bid when they want to get a player on the cheap that they know the owning club wants to get rid of.

Gutted to miss out on him but if we are wanting quality Championship players, then we are gonna have to start paying Championship prices. Otherwise it will be the likes of McGoldrick or up and coming players from League 1 & 2.

Problem is they won't, FA or EFL or whoever it is in charge of the sanctions are spineless. Only need to look at QPR or Bournemouth as examples. They'll fine Derby £10 million & call it quits, it's a joke.
If ya face fits FFP is fine not a fine !!!!!!! Fuck em what goes round comes around hopefully UTMB

I genuinely believe that Waghorn will be for sale this time next season and clubs will be able to get him half price paid. He's had one good season, Rangers fans didn't like him, Celtic fans loved him (in the same way they love Alfredo Morelos because they think he's sh*te).

If Derby are promoted he will definitely be surplus to requirements - I will review this post in a year's time :D;)
