While I would almost class Cannon as a disgrace the other day, its a basic break. We might not have pace at the back but we're still opened up a little too easy.
 

Does anybody know how much we spent on him??
He went to Luton for around 10 million apparently??
 
On Transfermarkt it suggests they did, I imagine the initial fee would have been much lower with incentives.
I'd imagine we paid around 3-5m

That's more believable. I reckon Luton paid a guaranteed 5-6m with incentives towards 10 that were never met

He didn't do well for them and in addition to their relegation that made them willing to take a considerable loss on him while bringing in valuable funds which few other players of theirs would fetch. So I'd say we probably gave them 3.5m or something but with these owners and our circumstances at the time I can't guess with any great confidence

Yeah,
I think some of the fees we have thrown around at the back end of the transfer window are concerning.
God knows how much we paid for Matos, Chong, McGuinness, Tanganga and loan fees.

The combined McGuinness, Matos and Chong spend must be horrific

I'm not surprised we were able to get these permanent deals done quickly - there will have been zero serious competition. An example of picking up the scraps late in the window

In fairness, I'd read that Ipswich were after McGuinness on deadline day too, apart from Andy Giddings tweet about him coming to us, all the rumours on twitter were saying he was off to Ipswich!
I think he'll come good though, its easy for people to jump on the hatewagon when the team plays so poorly, but as confidence grows I think we'll see a solid defender.

He has an outstanding opportunity, that's for sure, playing between 2 as convincing as Tanganga and Mee. I want to see some evidence pretty soon though that he has at least one stand out attrubute
 
Hes a decent head it and kick it CB. Sometimes you need one those. Hes got 2 very good players at the side of him. I feel pretty comfortable with him in the air. Blackburn put a fair few crosses in and the defence coped pretty well
 
I think, in an orthodox back 4, he looks a bit vulnerable and can be caught out for pace with balls over the top and through the channels but in our current set up of a back 3 (sort of, with Tanganga playing more wide as the right CB) he looks more comfortable but still shows a few signs of being slightly out of position.
He has looked more comfortable in dealing with high balls over recent games and has made some decent headed clearances from crosses and does look to be getting more confident with each game.
It will be interesting to see how he deals with strikers that have good pace. If teams get him turned around to chase through balls he could be found wanting.
Overall, though, he has been part of a team that has looked much more solid as a defensive unit over the last 4-5 games.
Lets see how he does tonight with a likely front 2 of Smith (Monster in the air) and Jebbison (Has been eating off his tap in against Everton a coulpe of years ago but does have decent pace). Could be decent test of his better attributes.
 
Given we've averaged more corners than anyone else in the championship so far this season, it's good to see us score from 1 against Blackburn.

One thing that I noticed that worked in regards to the Watford and Blackburn games, was that we swapped our target on corners from McGuinness to Tanganga.

Watford game, just about every corner we had was aimed at McGuinness who often found himself being marked by either 1 or 2 players each time, and we couldn't make the most of them.

Then during the Blackburn game, when McGuinness was still being marked by 1 or 2 players, we aimed the corners at Tanganga instead.

Most of our corners against Blackburn, Tanganga was either unmarked or was able to overpower his marker which led to the equaliser and a good chance he had in the first half.

Nice little tactical switch, the bigger more imposing McGuinness being used as a decoy which leaves the more mobile Tanganga to be a threat on corners, something I hope we continue.

He’s not a quality defender at this level at all.

Him hoping for a foul or giving up didn’t help on the third either.

It will take a lot to win me around ever since Ndiaye embarrassed him.

If you replaced him with Souttar that defence would look completely different.
 
He's very, very slow and gets caught underneath the ball far too often but he's still miles better than Mee.

The defensive three as a unit are a disgrace and Wilder hasn't improved them.

IMO, he's a decent Championship CB, not as good as Tanganga and Mee but good enough.

Would a fit Souttar replace him in the middle of that back 3? Yes, 100%, Souttar is a better player

Would Robbo or RND replace McGuinness? No, he's an upgrade on both of them, as is Mee

Regarding tonight, if McGuinness was injured for their 3rd tonight (at which point we still had subs) and CW knew that and still didn't bring Bindon on, that should be a sign that we'll need some defensive cover for McGuinness himself.

Other than McGuinness, have we got another big head it-kick it CB that could play that middle CB role? Zätterström has the height but none of us have seen him play, and neither Bindon or Godfrey are that type of CB.
 
Preston went direct second half which changed the game, that’s a bit concerning regards McGuinness considering this is supposed to be what he’s good at. He’s a below average champ centre back at best and that’s what we’ll be if we insist on starting him every week.
