I'm not surprised he said that because it's his team. But, there was no attempt to play the ball for the foul in the pen though, after the foul he then wraps his foot around Moore to win the ball but by that point Dickie has pulled back Moore and he clearly was making no effort to win the ball fairly.

I haven't watched it back yet but my initial thoughts were that he did get a slight touch on the ball but only after he'd dragged Moore down and denied a clear goal scoring chance. Still a penalty and straight red IMO.

I suppose that works when it's a marginal decision in a close game. When everyone else is saying it's a clear foul and red card and you've played football enough to know that it obviously was, you might just look at your manager and go "what's this guy on about?"

It was absolutely brainless from Dickie and it something that winds me up in general when professional footballers do that so early in a game.

If you’ve no chance of making a genuine challenge just let them through. Far better to simply concede a goal that early than get yourself sent off and give a pen away.

It doesn't help the game that I've seen fans, a commentator, and a manager, having a go at the ref when they're the ones who don't know the rules. The ref should get credit because he could've easily bottled it in a big game against the home crowd.

I think some refs would've taken the excuse that after the arms on the back the player makes a tackle, but the rule's explicit here and that's a red all day long.
