This week I saw the name Hill cropping up regularly in another thread.

Took me ages to realise that it wasn't Colin Hill they were talking about

I rated Colin by the way, much more so than Matt although Colin did have the advantage of playing with better players around him.

Wasn't it Matt Hill who had difficulties with heading a ball? I remember him being a walking mistake for a bit but then settling down to be fairly reliable. Heady days!

Matt Hill was a reight header of the ball. About 5 ft 7 but won every header.

He had a massive fucking head and a questionable neck.

Does anyone know why the Blades fans were taunting a Yeovil steward at the away leg by singing “Haircut by Matalan”? I mean, he did have a stupid haircut, but why Matalan?

If memory serves it started during a home game against palace in in the mid 00s (possibly the last game of the 05/06 season).

Palace had that Hungarian keeper who wears the baggy tracksuit bottoms. He got a round of “tracksuit from Matalan” from the Kop.

It then got adapted for any particularly badly dressed opposition fan at away games (t shirt, jeans, tracksuit, jumper etc from Matalan).

Definitely sung 22/04/06 away at Luton. We were on that small terrace with the entrance through terraced houses. To our right one of Luton’s top boys in the corner (near the Eric Morecambe suite...) was giving it large.

He was wearing a velour looking golden brown full tracksuit. Top and bottom combo.

Hence the chant. Don’t know if it was sung before that definitively but deffo on that afternoon.

My memory isn’t the best but I don’t remember Matt Hill ever letting us down. He obviously wasn’t the best player we’ve ever had but I don’t remember him having loads of stinkers, from what I remember he rarely got beaten and never shied away.

Notts County away, he put it out for a corner with his left foot rather than attempting to put it out for a throw in with his right. No pro footballer should be that one-footed.
