Manchester talk about United

I've learned from S2 that the best way to trigger Forest fans is to call them "NOTTS Forest". As far as they're concerned "Notts" are Notts County.

Doesn't seem to occur to them that "Notts" is the accepted shorthand for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire!
Not trying to be pedantic (but I am so it can come across that way). Isn’t Notts short for just Nottinghamshire in the same way Yorks, Derby’s,etc it short for the respective county and not the City

I've heard a lot of people say "going down to Notts tomorrow" as in Nottingham.

Isn’t the club called Notts County rather than Nottingham county and it’s officially Nottingham Forest rather than Notts Forest?

I'm glad I'm not in that discussion. I can see the tone of the thread going south quickly.

I don't have an issue with them referring to themselves as United amongst themselves.

Likewise we would refer to ourselves the same.

If we play each other then I object strongly to them being referred to as United. In which case my usual response is to refer to them as Newton Heath which is what they were when we were already well into our United days.

For neutral journalists, the Blades makes most sense interchangeably with Sheffield United. Likewise just their full name and nickname should be used. But I guess too many journalists want to be all pally with them

It doesn't really bother me to be honest, maybe it should, but it just doesn't. I refer to us as United and The Blades, but I can't control what other supporters or those in the media choose to do.

In any case, the vast majority of those watching know our full name, and most of those who don't can read, so will quickly figure it out.

I take the positives, i.e that we are now categorically seen as THE Sheffield club on the world stage, and will be for long time. That lot can grunt on about the 90's, winning the Rumbalow's Cup, finishing 3rd and getting spanked in Europe twice, all they want.

Hear "Sheffield", think Red & White, think United.

Although we are responsible for bringing the name “United” to the football world. We have then proceeded to do fuck all with it for the next 130 years. With success comes fame, I guess with such prolonged absences from the top flight and very little success over the years.....the “all conquering“ Mancs have basically gone uncontested for right to be called “United.” But the longer that we stay in the Premier league, more fans and media will take the time and trouble to get our name right.

The only way the media are gonna start showing us a little respect and stop calling us “Sheffield“ is if we either start winning trophies or the pigs get promoted......Trophies it is then.

I often tell folk I support 'Sheff United' (or 'Sheff Yanited' as its pronounced. Sometimes I don't even bother pronouncing the 't' I'm that much of a lazy sod).

Don’t know why but (mainly young) people not pronouncing ‘t’s’ really grinds my gears. How has a generation got so lazy they can’t even be bothered to pronounce a feckin letter. Small rant over, yours Angry Dad. UTB

The Yorkshire accent pal. Same with 'water'. My Mrs pulls me everytime as our daughter says it. I can't spell how it's pronounced but I'm sure some will get what I mean.

Unfortunately Ainsley it’s not just Yorkshire it seems the whole country’s youth has been infested with a letter destroying virus. It’s the T’s I feel sorry for, they’ve done nothing wrong 🥺 UTB

as for youngsters - there's nothing worse than chucking x number of "likes" in a sentence when not even one of them is needed.

My rant over !

The one who asked

“and are they any Wednesday fans posting on here?”

I want to reply and say.. “looking at some of the replies on the thread, almost certainly“

its ok the prem clubs calling us Sheffield, they relate it to the red and whites naturally now
lets face it since social media took hold Wednesday have not played in the prem
no prem tweets on prem wednesday, no facebook includes prem wednesday
Wednesday prem games are only available on beta max and their one trophy in 80 years is on 8mm film.
prem chat rooms have been devoid of owls fans ,,lucky bastards,,, for 2 decades
All this all the top clubs want Wednesday back is utter bollocks , no one gives a shit as they cant remember them
A club that in 20 years since leaving the prem have averaged 17th in the championship taking 4 seasons in division 3 placings
If as expected EFL do impose enough of a points deduction to give them their 3rd relegation to div 3 in 18 years it will be the truest indication to their status
Middling championship club with a penchant for excursions to div three

Whats a capital letter between friends ?
Just a press of the CAPS LOCK.
Just my way of saying, The First and one and only.
If my family had been mentally deficient enough to have supported the other faction, I would have been extremely indignant when they binned THE for Sheffield. I mean, Everton never has been preceded by Liverpool.
I would be content if we changed to 'The United'.
