A few Manchester tips for those who may not have been for a while.

The Northern quarter is now a decent place to booze, it does get busy but ale choice is good.

Chorlton is even better, with a range of small independent bars with a great ale range.

Abduls kebabs on Rusholme road is still the best place to eat.

Anyone seeking a chip butty should ask for a chip barm...

Granada TV studios have moved so you won't see the stars in the pubs near the Liverpool road anymore.

The match day coach specials still arrive from Somerset, Sussex and Swindon bringing in the Man Utd fans.

The national football museum is simply brilliant and next to Victoria train station, which is now unrecognisable.

The central art gallery has a banksy and some fine early industrial oil paintings.

Bernard Manning's world famous Embassy club is no more.

People are still killed in Salford.

The Stone Roses, Joy Division, The Smiths and Oasis will not be heard in The Boardwalk or The Hacienda ever again.

Enjoy yourself as we have more chance of going back to play Salford City than we have of going back to the two Manc clubs anytime soon.

I would add that it's still a shithole round Picadilly. There's also a "gay quarter"

I love the scare quotes.

As it happens my daughter works for the Lesbian and Gay Foundation in Manchester and regularly patrols the "gay quarter" fishing cruisers out of the canal and warning off any prospective queer bashers. If hairy overweight men are your thing, I can recommend a good bear bar there.

It's not the Manchester I used to know. Twisted Elegance night at Ampersand Nightclub... Those were the days. Life when a bottle of lager on Deansgate locks used to cost about £2 not £5.

Used to love a night in Manchester :(

Thanks for all the tips. I'll be there with a t shirt saying "cup tart" on it, waiting to be battered by bigger blades.

The locals are also still inexplicably more gruff and aggressive than the average Sheffielder by a factor far greater than the mere 60 or so miles between our cites can explain!

Blade for Sale - its 31miles give or take - a local derby.

ever so slightly further than Leeds.

I suppose the Sheffielder's perception of distance to Manchester may be shaped by the almost impassable mountain range that lies between?

OK ground to ground in a straight line GoogleEarth® tells me its 341/2 miles, obviously the great circle route would save fuel.

This place is supposed to be decent, I've never been, and although it is Salford, it's five minutes walk from Deansgate, Blades connection too.

Had the pleasure of meeting Paul Heaton briefly there when I went to see Section60 play. Arrived in my old United shirt. Lovely spot for a gig and a great pub.

Lived there for 3 years and the city centre is still brilliant. Try get to Almost Famous for a burger if you can, incredible grub.

I've been to the pub above - nice inside but I've a suspicion it only serves the new brands of 'real' ale, y'know the warm flat stuff that Londoners always liked - a bit like what they sell at the Rutland.

(DOH - never realised it was Paul Heatons !)

The Bowls Club at Old Trafford is a most atmospheric place and unsurprisingly its very close to the ground.

Dont tell Baxter about point 1.

it panders to the whims of all the bbc staff thats moved up from Lomdon , hence the flacid beer

There are also plenty of ropey prostitutes round by Piccadilly station, if that's your thing.

Mrs Stringjunior and I lived in a flat in the gay Village before we were wed. Had some of the best nights out known to mankind on Canal Street in 98-99. I even happened upon some of the gays during that time and, disappointingly, was never offered any kind of sexual servicing.

Anyway, moving on, the BBC at media city do a good tour of their operation if that's what floats your boat, Media City has good bars and restaurants including Damson for the fine diners, Marco's for the more money than sense label snobs, and Pokusevskis for the mildly quirky surroundings and great coffee.

100 yards across the ship canal is the Imperial War Museum which is definitely worth a visit. Then you're only a hop skip and a jump away from Old Trafford.

Thanks for that CB. I was going to go on the train but don't think I'll bother now. Camouflaging the station is just plain feckin' stoopid if you ask me
