No news but we've had a pop back at Arnold

14:30 4th June 2013
Sheffield United's search for a new manager continues, the Club confirmed today (Tuesday).

"We are determined to follow a procedure to find the right person for Sheffield United," said Blades Chief Executive Julian Winter. "We recognise there is a lot of interest and we will make an announcement as soon as we are able to do so.

"We always knew it was likely to take some time but we are confident that our choice will be the right way forward for this club," said Mr Winter, part of a three man team plus football consultant and former boss Dave Bassett tasked with recruiting a new manager.

"We still have got some more interviews and will then look to appoint from the strong line-up of candidates."

In the meantime, Mr Winter has taken time out to comment on the 'disappointing' claims made in the media by Central Coast Mariners Head Coach Graham Arnold following his interview for the post.

Arnold suggested the Club was 'out of touch' with its requirements for the managerial post.

Mr Winter said: "Whilst Graham Arnold may have been responding to one or two challenging questions, I am flabbergasted and disappointed by Mr Arnold's remarks which are unprofessional, clearly misinformed and not the actual position of the club.

"Key information about how the club is structured and how it plans to operate has been clearly missed.

"We set out a clear manager profile to meet the future needs of the Club to 'act differently' in terms of player recruitment and continue the utilisation of home grown talent where the Club has been incredibly successful in recent years.

"The Club has reorganised to create a modern football department and has established a new player recruitment function through a Head of Football Operations, similar to Clubs like West Brom, Southampton, Cardiff and Watford who have all enjoyed an upturn in fortunes.

"We have also applied for Category Two status as an Academy with a clear football philosophy to take the Club forward," added Mr Winter.

So what is a 'new player recruitment function'? sounds like an extra body that will get in the way of signing players the manager wants and will try to get their own targets that may not fit the managers plans.

And Mr Winter told me to my face that we already were a class 2 academy so whats that all about?

It might be being cynical but I think Julian Winter is full of crap and just telling people what they want to hear but without actually telling them anything

Now who's going to pick up on this little snippet first....? ;)

Edit: Answered BEFORE my question!

All that statement says to me is we are no where near appointing anyone.

Just confirming that what we know already that Bassett is on the panel and Arnold probably was talking a fair bit of shit.

I hope that the "player recruitment function" is a modern-day twatspeak version of "scouting department" and I'd imagine that they will work with the new first team manager to research and sign new players.

Head of Football Operations has been John Stephenson since 2011.

Not sure why the club bother to put out anything. People will just use some of the words to suit their own agenda as seen in every reply so far!

That's not being cynical Ted, it simply confirms that you can read.

He must have a degree in "business bullshit", fortunately as an IT'er I have the equivalent deciphering degree "laughing at business bullshitters".
When we fuck him off again I'll try and get him a job where I work with our sales monkeys, they'll love him.

I was looking for a way to say something similar without it sounding as negative. While on the one hand I consider it a good thing they're communicating and see the need to keep the fans "informed", - the speculation and rumours flying around were doing no good at all - I find it disappointing that they bothered to refer to Graham Arnold. It seems a little unprofessional to me.

I hope thats soon, I really dislike him

I thought we had Class 2 status as well. Even Wikipedia seems to think so!

I argued with him for about 20 mins as to what we needed to get it upto a class 1 and he waffled loads of BS but couldn't give me a definite answer (giving a big fat bung to the PL was the answer I gathered) , so from that article I just get the impression hes a liar. He cant F'off soon enough for me.

Winter just interviewed by Paul Walker. Very little really as an update, more directed at Arnold tbh - like today's club statement.

7 candidates from the start, that's remained the case.

Can't provide a timescale.

Not prepared to say how many names are left in the mix.

"All of them have been impressive in their own individual way"

Arnold's comments "misplaced" - "far more to Sheffield United than he would have you believe", chosen to ignore various things in the interview.

"Hopefully, we'll announce fairly soon...a little more patience required"

The cost of funding a class I academy is over £2.5m a year. We simply can't afford that.

Foster's brother?

I think 2.5 Mil is quite cheap to change the catchment area of your academy from 10miles (something like that) to world wide. The future sales of those players should easily cover 2.5 Mil a year. What does it cost at the moment around 1 Mil?

Tevez money should be paying for this, or more appropriately the cash from the Kyles. I do get that this money doesnt exist anymore though but soon we may well have Diago money. My issue with winter was that he couldnt tell me even as much as you just have, he just kept saying we need more staff, more amenities and then more money to make it class 1. I asked what the money was for if not staff or amenities and he couldn't come up with anything not even a vague amount of how much extra money we would need

Wouldn't it just perform a similar function to that of a Director of football? And looking at the affects that the short term appointment approach of the last number of managers has has on our long term predicament, I'm all for it.

UTB

I see how it could have some advantages if it was the right person who had the right amount of backing and respect of the manager as it would add continuity for when we changed managers. BUT I can also see it stifling the manager who may want player A but director of footy wants player B and theres only enough budget for 1 of them then who has the final say. Id want the manager to have final say as its his team and he's the one that'll be judged at the end. Isnt that why Jose left Chelsea because of meddling from above about players and they had all the money in the world, whereas we have naff all but maybe we could afford a little extra if we didnt have an extra wage going out to this director of football

We are dirt poor at the moment. How can we even afford to have a 'Director of Football'?

If we ever do get a manager, then he won't want Bassett looking over his shoulder while he tries to do his job,I don't suppose Bassett comes cheap does he?

What about a plebiscite among the supporters to pick the team? please don't take offence, we are all plebs round here!
