Managerial Merrygoround: Are you happy with Clough?

So in the last few days

Bristol City have appointed Steve Cotterill.

Crawley have appointed John Gregory.

Portsmouth are enquiring for Justin Edinburgh and Chris Wilder.

Pigs job is having odds slashed for Steve Evans. Warnock and Megson also rumoured. Carbone a longshot!

Barnsley faves. look like O'Driscoll, Wilson or Redfearn.


Seem as it's a topic still relatively fresh in our minds, how satisfied are you with Clough given the names that are being thrown around for vacancies (even without the hidsight of the relative success Clough has enjoyed over last few weeks)?

I wanted Chris Morgan, but have been relatively happy with Clough so far, and think he was the best option for us at the time if we didn't want to go down the Morgan route.

He is slowly but surely moving us in an upwards direction. He has already got rid of 2 of the sorriest members of the shower of shit he inherited, and i think if we need a bit of stability he is the man.

Next season will be the season where we can begin to judge him provided that we stay in this division which i think we should do.

I think if we had have appointed Clough in the summer and poached him from Derby, it would have been a big coup. Personally, I am delighted he is in charge.

I just hope that if we lose a few the fans don't start calling for his head. Give Clough two transfer windows and I'm sure he'll have us much nearer the top than the bottom.

As a wider point, some of the sackings of late have been outrageous and ill timed. Are managers generally that poor or are expectations unrealistically high for so many clubs (such as Barnsley for example)? UTB

It is, however ,time for a leap of faith, in both the boardroom and the stands, and a recognition that the failings of the short-term approach of recent seasons has only made the job more difficult. That means no mouthbreathers carrying on if we don't win for a month and no kneejerking to their demands upstairs.

When you consider the maximum trophies a club can win in a season and the number of clubs that win nothing then most managers are basically failures, if only from the perspective of their chairmen.

Non withstanding my opinion on the vast majority of managers (i.e. shite), I think the litmus test is asking 'What if Wendy had appointed NC?' Personally, I would be worried as he's one of the younger, brighter, experienced talents around.
People like Owen Coyle, Allardyce, Jones etc. are dinosaurs who want consigning to the knackers yard.

Absolutely.

Derby are hitting some great form at the moment and look like genuine promotion contenders. Is this due to the overnight effect of Shtevey Mac? No, he hasn't signed anyone except for a couple of loans. The reasons for their current success is the stable environment, coaching and shrewd acquisitions by Clough and a dash of new Manager syndrome.

Clough needs 3 years with us before he can be properly judged. 1st year avoid relegation, 2nd year bring together a new squad and 3rd year promotion.

Clough is not only saying the right things but he's doing the right things. Managers should be given a full pre-season with a squad they've built up so in my book, survival and becoming hard to beat will be class this season as a success.
Some of the names mentioned above would be enough to give me sleepness nights.

I was one of the few that wanted to hang on before sacking Weir. Had we waited then Clough could've been in work elsewhere by now

So, happy to be wrong, happy to have Clough and happy with current progress.

It seemed very early in the season to fire a manager, but I guess this is the issue of modern football and the January transfer window. If you fire in December you have to take pot luck with who's available.

Big question then:
Did the board at SUFC look and see Clough was available before firing Weir, or did they fire him anyway and then start looking?

If they did the former, very well done...if it was the latter, then we got lucky!

The problem we have is that fucking programme on radio Sheffield with its regular set of know nowts and shithouse presenters with all the airtime they need to influence people and turn people against the manager. I see the chief nobhead has started already ,unfortunately they are the loudest voices and shouldn't be allowed to. I notice the only decent presenter (giddings) has started ridiculing them and having sensible football discussions ,its the others we need to worry about.

I didn't think Weir got long enough but realise that was a high risk strategy. I said at the time we appointed him it was the best we could have hoped for and I stand by that now.

I would have accepted Wilder, but no-one on that list seems any better than what we have.
It's always the same old faces that are up for every managerial job. That's why I was initially happy with Weir - something a little different. Pity it didn't work out.

Nigel Clough seems to tick all the boxes for us; the big name that McCabe always yearned for in Robson, Speed and Weir, a Manager which judging by this thread is satisfying the fans and, most importantly, one that the players are positively reacting to.

I didn't even realise Barker and O'Driscoll had even been given the boot until I read about them going elsewhere today!

Also fairly happy with Clough at the moment. Not sure I'll ever really like the style of play he insists upon (nor the odd team selections either) but doing an ok job dragging us out of the shit thus far.

long-Harry/Collins-Doyle-Porter(although porter has started a lot, but been taken off frequently)

Like it or not, that appears to be his spine (many Doyle haters won't like it). Around that he has not been afraid to change players during a game or from week to week.

Miller has looked good, but he's also not been afraid to bring Baxter or Taylor alongside Porter. Flynn, McGinn, Lappin, White, Murphy all have had chances and runs out.

He needs time to develop his squad and to get rid of the dross we have accumulated over the past few years !

Cloughs doing the best he can to turn our season around with a very average team.
Selecting a new captain is a priority for me.
But weve got to be happy with the gaffer weve got with the dross been spouted about for the pigs/farmers job.

Give it time. He's been pretty clear that we're going to survive by scrapping and giving nothing away at the back. But once we're clear of the trapdown (and maybe given a couple of signings), I fully expect we'll see more attractive attacking football. Like father like son.

I'm with Brownie, I also wanted Morgan but very pleased with Cloughie. When Weir joined he was quite a smoothy and articulate which impressed the Board enough to sign him, could talk the talk but that was all. Cloughies not the easiest on the ear during interviews but you can sense the depth of experience he's had as a manager. All I want now is for the Swine to sign Megson again because I can't stand the man and that for me is a perfect combination and reinforces my hatred of everything at the Sty

One of things that's impressed me about Clough is that doesn't panic.
Most managers in his position would have flooded the squad with loanees but he looked what he inherited instilled confidence and belief in a outfit on their knees.
