I initially thought Wilder was willing to adapt and get rid of players that did not fit. However, as fans increasingly complained about the style of play and the selection of Lundstram he dug in more and doubled down.

This reminds me of the England Kane situation - yes he scored a scuffed header. He trots about doing very little closing down, doesn't look match fit and even when he looked injured is not substituted. No Calvert-Lewin even on the bench even though his work rate is double that of Kane.

Seen this behaviour from managers many times - Is this a Manager syndrome?

I think all managers suffer from it, by varying degrees, when it works it's self belief and confidence, when it doesn't its stubbornness or one trick pony etc
Switched the TV on last night just as the game started, didn't check who was on the bench, it wasn't until the commentator mentioned DCL wasn't there, when Kane went down injured in the 2nd half, beyond stubborn not having DCL as an option, over his career Kane has spent months out injured.

Kane's running or lack of it yesterday was alarming, it was running like he needed to keep buttocks clenched to prevent doing a number 2! But Southgate knows if he hits a purple patch then he can be unstoppable, I can only assume that was the logic. I don't know if Kane normally is so economical with his running, or whether he's carrying an injury,maybe.

Know what you are saying. The first part of the game felt like we were playing with 10 men. He is the team captain which can be a factor - though look how many times our Billy comes of the bench.

I agree to a point in that I was frustrated for a notable part of the game as I felt we weren't using the strengths we do have in the squad.

That said I'm a supporter of Southgate as I think he's much more than an FA dream as some suggest.

The players respect him, a number of times now I've heard people say he's about them rather than himself. He also doesn't bow to the media or public opinion but at the same time doesn't complain or blame the media like other managers did.

How far we go who knows, I'm trying not to get carried away with what is a fabulous opportunity, but Southgate's 'stubborness' if that's what you want to call it, might just be the best way.

We used to get the same stuff about Billy, when he hit a rut. Billy (like Kane and many other goal scorers) never scored one every other game, his goals came in fits and starts. The experts on here kept saying he needed 'resting', much like Kane. He didn't of course, he needed supporting and many of us knew he would come good again.

It's not manager stubbornness, it's fan impatience.

Kane's record for England is an unbelievable 35 goals in 58 appearances. In my mind that makes him the first name on the team sheet for the foreseeable future, end of.

I get the reasoning why he persisted with Kane- fair enough. Which suggests even at say 70%, manager believes he is the best option.

I think Wilder was using Lunny to prove some sort of point to the board and the fans.

I want to keep him so sort him out a better contract or give me even more money for a new player. I will play him regardless to make this point despite the fact I could play Ozzy instead.

All it did was prove Wilder spent the money he already had on the wrong areas of the team.

Kane is a great player, just not at the moment, he's been garbage so far, looks injured as many have said
Rice & Philips too similar and were treading on each other toes almost, Philips the better of the two.

Kane is a much better finisher, he finished top scorer & assists in the Prem. He is frustrating mainly his pace within an athletic team stands out, but you cant just bring in DCL with no experience and put that down to stubbornness.

I appreciate this isn't the reason for the topic though, managers will stick with players they trust. That's why they tend to take them to the clubs they join, we will probably see Wilder take a few of our players with him at some point too.

I think that the main difference between Southgate and wilder is that Southgates plan is working. He has got us to the quarter finals, which seems to be the benchmark of success for England. However dull the performances are, he gets paid for results. Like most fans, l would like to see Greasy Jack, Sancho or Foden play more rather than the two holding midfielders. The Leeds guy has grown on me as I quite enjoyed him putting opponents on their arse, and he at least occasionally passes the ball forwards. However, I cannot see what anyone sees in Rice. He gets the ball off the defence and then plays it straight back to the defence, often the same guy. All of England's centre backs made more forward runs with the ball last night. He is allegedly there to protect the defence but could easily have been sent off yesterday if Kyle hadn't bailed him out for ball watching as his opponent just jogged past him. For me he falls into the Carlton Palmer class of England midfielders.

Does no one just think that Wembley is not made for a striker like Kane? It’s about as big as you can get, not at all made for strikers like Kane who like to play compact, Kane likes to make a shimmy and shoot, not get in between the lines…

Would love to know the pitch size difference between Wembley and The Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

edit: I don’t know how true but Google say’s Wembley is 133m and Spurs stadium is 105m

Wilder built something you could fall in love with. Exciting football, a team with a big personality.

Southgate has built a very functional team that has got some good results. I’m delighted about the results but will never fall in love with the style of football.

People keep talking about Kane's form but maybe he's doing exactly what he's being told to do? What if his ineffectiveness is down to the role Southgate is trying to put him in? All the play was about getting the ball out to Sterling and Saka and we didn't look to go through the middle and bring Kane into the game. That wouldn't have been a bad plan if we'd got a decent number of crosses in but it's a waste of a player who can link up as well as Kane.

Not saying I was impressed by his lack of movement but if Southgate's telling him to stand up top and wait for the ball then it could be on the manager not the player.

Only problem is that he is the captain, so he will always start.

Does he deserve to start after his performances? No

Do i think he's the exemplary leader? No

Do I think he's led the team during the Euros? Questionable

Might we shoot ourselves in the foot by playing someone less experienced and not a leader (DCL) up front? I'm not so sure, but I wouldn't want to risk it!

He drifts a lot with Spurs, drops deep to get the ball, but they have players who are used to that and know how to link with him, like Son. That’s an understanding that’s been built up over time, playing together week in, week out. I suspect he has been told to stay more central and higher up the pitch.
